THE BOYS IN THE BOAT MOVIE REVIEW

Sure are some boys in that boat. Yep. Look at those boys. In the boat. What’s goin’ on in that boat? Oh, ya know, they’re rowin’. Rowin’ you say? Sure, sure, college boys rowin’. Any good? Sure, sure, they gonna be in the Olympics and make that Hitler guy mad. Who, those boys in the boat? Ya, you know it. So, this a movie about those Hiter-annoying boat boys? Yah, yah, sure is. Any good? Well, ya know, it’s definitely a movie about boys in a boat. By that bat-nipples guy? Yah. Back to basics, I guess. Underdog sports movie, dontcha know. Well, I guess I better find out how it is, then. Or, ya know, you could listen to Chris, Frank, and Nathan give their take on it. Ya know, see if it’s for you. Oh, well, that does sound nice.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). THE COLOR PURPLE MOVIE REVIEW

The 1985 adaptation by Steven Spielberg of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker was nominated for 11 Oscars (although it didn’t win any), was a huge success in theaters, and generally is thought of as a fantastic film. It does seem odd to take this story of deep trauma and add music and dancing. And yet, it works. At least it had the toes tapping and the eyeducts moistening with Chris, Frank, and Kim who review it here. The lead role of Celie is taken over here by Fantasia Barrino, who previously had played the role in the Broadway version of the musical. Celie is separated from her beloved sister at a pre-teen age against their wills when Celie is married off by her sexually abusive father to a local ne’er-do-well Mister (Colman Domingo). She is treated as a maid rather than a wife and is ignored on the best of days. When a circuit singer comes to town, Shug (Taraji P. Henson) that Mister lusts after, Celie starts to see that maybe a woman can be independant and not have to put up with beasts like her husband and father. With a fantastic cast (especially MVP Danielle Brooks as Sofia), The Color Purple is really something to see, hear, and feel. Because we had all the feels.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

WONKA MOVIE REVIEW

The path to watching Wonka: Step 1: Ah, jeez, a Willy Wonka prequel? And it’s a musical? I am DEFINITELY not going to see that. Step 2: It’s written and directed by the guy who did the Paddington movies? Hmm. Step 3: Go see Wonka movie. Step 4: Enjoy. That’s pretty much the path Chris and Nathan went down (although not so much Frank, that old Scrooge). Timothée Chalamet steps into Gene Wilder’s shoes as the young Willy first coming to Europe to establish his chocolate shop. But even with all his magic and next-level confectionary skills, the city is not so inclined to let this young upstart come in and upset the delicate chocolate balance of power. With appearances by tons of beloved English character actors, and all the detail and well-done whimsy you expect from this director/writer, Wonka, for two of us, was a total treat. Frank needs to be visited by three ghosts or something.

EILEEN MOVIE REVIEW

It’s Christmas time in a small town in 1960’s Massachusetts, a place where any hopes and dreams are killed and buried beneath the cold and the grey of the monotonous tedium of everyday life. At least that’s the case for Eileen Dunlap (Thomasin McKenzie) as she spends her days listlessly going from her dead end job at a boy’s juvenile detention facility, to coming home to take care of her unappreciative, alcoholic father, Jim (Shea Whigham), and back again to work in the morning. Rinse and repeat. Until a new outgoing prison psychologist, Rebecca (Anne Hathaway), arrives at the penitentiary, and slowly begins to awaken a passionate side of Eileen that was thought to be only in her darker daydreams and fantasies. Based on the novel by Ottessa Moshfegh (who also wrote the screenplay), Mindy, Frank, and Lewayne sift through the cigarette smokey air to discuss the merits and demerits of this psychological thriller, and whether it holds its own against the grimy 60’s noir films that Eileen is clearly striving to imitate. So pour some bad wine into a coffee mug, and check out their review.

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

FERRARI MOVIE REVIEW

It’s been 8 years since his last film Blackhat and Michael Mann is finally back in the director’s chair with his newest film, Ferrari. The film follows ex-racer and entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari, played here by an aged up Adam Driver, during a tumultuous summer in 1957 where he jungles his auto-empire and love lifes. Like most of Mann’s lead protagonists, Driver plays Ferrari as a stoic conflicted character trying to steer away from the real problems at hand, his marriage and affair. His wife Laura, played by Penelope Cruz who steals every scene she’s in, runs the financial end of the company while Enzo tries to right the crumbling company by focusing on winning the treacherous Mille Miglia 1,000 mile race. At the same time, Enzo devotes some of his time to his mistress Lina Lardi (Shailene Woodley) and their son. He’s a busy guy to say the least. As Laura uncovers Enzo’s secrets, he is driven to harsh realities and decisions he needs to make. This is less of a fast-car-vroom-vroom kind of movie and more of a complicated-man-trying-to-have-his-cake-and-eat-it-too kind of flick. Listen as Wright, Nathan, Marco, and Eric navigate the windy roads that is Ferrari and discuss whether or not this is a next great Mann film or if it crashes and burns by the end.

THE IRON CLAW MOVIE REVIEW

Are you ready to rumble? Well, you can get it on with A24’s new biopic about the doomed Von Erich family, The Iron Claw. Fritz (Holt McCallany) was a major wrestler in his day, but that time has passed and the mantle has been handed off to his multiple sons to become superstar wrestlers in their own right and carry on their father’s legacy. Unfortunately, dad is a bit of toxic dickhead, openly playing favorites against his sons and trying to set them against each other, and maybe not all of them WANT to be part of this family tradition. Zac Efron plays Fritz’s son Kevin, who has put on an Incredible Hulk amount of muscle for the role. Kevin just wants his family to get along, his dad to love him, and to be the best wrestler he can, but things rarely go his way. Unfortunately for this family, Kevin’s trials are the least terrible thing to happen to them as a string of unbearable tragedies rips their lives apart. Chris, Spidermike, and Wright get ringside for this one and the reviews go from best of the year, to one of the most ‘meh’. Check out the review and please don’t send Chris hate mail even if he deserves it.

Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM MOVIE REVIEW

Jason Momoa takes one last turn as the King of Atlantis in this follow-up to 2018’s Aquaman. This time around, he and Mera (Amber Heard) have had a child and rearing them takes about as much out of Aquaman as does being the King of the undersea empire. But thank goodness, chaos erupts and he has to go punch things when Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) returns. Still out for revenge for the death of his father, Manta makes a deal with an ancient entity and enemy of Atlanteans to grant him immense green-tinted power. This also comes with the side effect of rapidly speeding up the global warming timeline and there’s only one way to find him and put a stop to his dastardly deeds: free his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) from the prison he put him in. So what you got here is a mismatched buddy comedy at its top form, and another dull cg slug-fest at it’s almost worst. I say ‘almost’ because a lot of the script is…woof. Chris, Kim, and Nathan don’t exactly see things the same on this one (guesses who the outlier is) but it makes for a fun review of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad)

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. AMERICAN FICTION MOVIE REVIEW

Jeffrey Wright plays author and teacher Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a man with a rather pretentious name and the attitude to back it up. Frustrated that he has trouble getting his books noticed by anyone other than critics or even published at all, he jokingly writes a ‘black’ book. That is to say, he considers his experience as a black man just as valid as anyone else’s and is angry that the only books that are marketed as ‘important black novels’ are about criminals and the impoverished, often written and even titled in Ebonics, as is the current novel du jour by popular writer Sinatra Golden (Issa Rae). Much to his surprise, the book he dashed off quickly to poke fun of the cultural narrative is immediately heralded as great and important and he is offered more money that he could have dreamed of for it. Even worse, he has to pretend to be ‘street’ in order to sell the idea that it is real. The whole thing just makes him angry and sick, but unfortunately he really does need the money badly to care for his ailing mother. Chris, Marco, and Nathan salute this smart comedy that may just clock in as one of the best of the year.

LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND MOVIE REVIEW

So no one told you the world was gonna end today CLAPPING! Netflix presents an adaptation of the day before the technological collapse dystopia Leave the World Behind, co-written by the author Rumaan Alam with Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) who also directs. Amanda Sanford (Julia Roberts) has rented a house out in the woods for an impromptu family vacation with husband Clay (Ethan Hawke) and children Rose (Farrah Mackenzie) and Archie (Charlie Evans). After a midnight knock at the door, G. H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la) explain it’s their house and they would like to stay due to all the strange occurrences happening in the city. Tensions run thick as neither family trusts the other and the line between acting civil and staying alive is paper thin. All access to the outside world has been cut off, birds pepper the sky as if in a fleeing frenzy, deer are reclaiming the woods, and neighbors are answering their doors with shotguns. It’s a social commentary on how distant from each other we’ve all become when the network that brought us all together is shut down. Bradly, Lewayne, and Jordan adjust their tin foil hats accordingly and discuss the vibe of the film, the performances leading the way as the plot gets left behind, and what disgusting things people will believe when the world they knew disappears overnight. Dallas Cowboys 2023 Super Bowl Champions? Oh, the horror!

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know.
