DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 334: DISNEY AND THEN I GUESS MOVIES

On this very special episode of Digital Noise, John reviews his first trip ever to Disney (spoiler: he dug it). He and Chris go on for quite a while reviewing the rides and experience. Oh, wait, we’re supposed to be reviewing home releases on this show? Ok fine. We talk about two two-fers with two of the most macho men of the 70s/80s and how the sequels don’t live up to the first films. We disagree on a psychedelic sex romp that is widely, at least, referenced. We are not possessed to ever watch again a recent possession movie. And more. Much more.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). John Gholson is a writer and cartoonist with bylines at Movies.com, Moviefone, and Vice and illustration work for GQ and Fandango. As an actor, John can be seen in Zero Charisma, Hidden America With Jonah Ray, and The Suplex Duplex Complex. He writes and performs sketch comedy regularly at The New Movement Theater. John currently lives in Austin with his beloved comic book collection and a cat named after Peter Cushing.

TRUNK – LOCKED IN MOVIE REVIEW

Trunk – Locked In is a new thriller streaming on Amazon Prime Video. A German film, this movie is relentless in its pacing. Right out of the gate we meet Malina, in a trunk, dazed and confused. Someone has abducted her for reasons that are unclear but through a bunch of visuals, a cell phone, and her wits, Malina starts to figure out the puzzle. This movie is a tight 90 minutes and doesn’t let up for a moment. It’s not perfect, but what it lacks visually is made up for with decent storytelling. Shout out to the SFX department, there’s some really good practical effects in this. So let’s hang out with Mike and Chad while they try to rescue Melina out of another trunk so she can partake in this review.

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). HAZBIN HOTEL SERIES REVIEW

We’re all sinners, there is no denying that. Some of us commit little sins, like rooting for the Dallas Cowboys or lying to our spouses about diet and exercise. Others commit inhuman atrocities like murder and hosting a podcast. Sure, there’s always deathbed repentance to get away in the nick of time, but what about the possibility of sudden death? Damned to hell you’ll be surrounded by demons, carnage, infernal flames, and catchy AF musical numbers. This is kinda like what the new Amazon Prime Video show Hazbin Hotel is like. The Princess of Hell, Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen), is the daughter of Lucifer and Lilith. Her parents may be estranged but the residents of her hotel are even stranger. Demons, sinners, lowlifes, and monsters come to the hotel to rehabilitate and possibly be redeemed. You’ve got Sir Pentious (Alex Brightman) a steampunk inventor with egg minions. Angel Dust (Blake Roman) Hell’s hottest porn star. Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz) Charlie’s girlfriend with a secret past, and a bartending, winged, alcoholic cat named Hust (Keith David) Why redemption after death? Hell’s population is growing ever higher so Heaven’s solution to keep the numbers down is to descend once a year and exterminate souls at random, led by the most self-righteous prick of them all, Adam (also Alex Brightman). Bradly, the rock’n front man, composes this damned episode with back-hellions Harmony and Jordan. They discuss the music, the punnery, and the spectacle of hell’s hottest YouTube pilot turned into a full streaming series.

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. LISA FRANKENSTEIN MOVIE REVIEW

Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton) has a problem. It’s not that she’s had trouble fitting in with others at school. She prefers the company of the dead, at least as far as hanging out in an old abandoned cemetery in the woods and talking to one grave in particular as her confidant. It’s that thanks to a weird storm and lightning strike, now she’s really hanging out with the dead. Her confidant corpse (Cole Sprouse) is now shambling around after her, however affectionately. The undead thing has a few missing parts and they discover when he replaces them with parts from living people, he starts to transform and become more alive overall. Problem with that is, those living people have to go dead in the process. And as the creature becomes more alive, so does Lisa, discovering (I guess) her local Hot Topic and becoming noticed in a good way at the school. But, this film wasn’t noticed terribly kindly by some of our critics who suspect Hot Topic in fact funded the entire thing. Listen to Chris turn into a cranky old man (and Tessa and Mike to a lesser extent).

Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. THE UNDERDOGGS MOVIE REVIEW

If you are of a certain generation, there’s a good chance that not only have you seen The Mighty Ducks, but you could probably quote it while explaining the plot in great detail. It was certainly a pivotal film of the early 90s. It spawned several sequels and more than a few wannabes. And the best guess that Bradley, Melina, and T.C. have is that one night, Snoop Dogg got high, watched The Mighty Ducks, and said to himself, “I should make that movie.” So he did. Jaycen “Two-J’s” Jennings (Snoop) is an arrogant, washed up, former football superstar. After a major car accident, Jaycen is ordered to perform community service in his old neighborhood. He sees an opportunity to rebuild his brand by coaching a struggling youth football team, where one of the players is the son of his former flame Cherise (Tika Sumpter). Jaycen sees an opportunity for a comeback by using the kids to promote how much he’s grown, even if that’s all for show. But let’s be real. You know where this is going. The question is, does this very familiar sports movie play well, or does it do the bare minimum of storytelling in order to promote Snoop’s (albeit wonderful and altruistic) non-profit football organization founded to provide the opportunity for inner-city children to participate in youth football and cheer?

SUITABLE FLESH MOVIE REVIEW

Who among us hasn’t had the dream of swapping bodies with someone? In fact, we’re all friends here. Let’s be honest with each other. Who among us hasn’t had at least one dream where we specifically swap bodies with Heather Graham? No? Only Jordan, Lewayne, and T.C. are willing to admit that? Fine, fine, we’ll leave that for our therapists to work out. Which, as another fantasy, we’ve all imagined our psychologist as Heather Graham too, right? Still no from all of you? Huh, weird. Not exactly Lovecraftian weird. But still weird. Well, as a stroke of luck, the Screener Squad has been given the perfect movie for all those glorious fantasies. Suitable Flesh is a psychological sexual thriller written by Dennis Paoli, who wrote Reanimator back in 1985, and directed by Joe Lynch. Based on the 1937 H. P. Lovecraft short story “The Thing on the Doorstep”, it stars Heather Graham as Dr. Elizabeth Derby, a psychologist who has recently seen a client, Asa (Judah Lewis of The Babysitter). Liz fears that Asa’s Dissociative Identity Disorder is actually supernatural, in what could be referred to in horror terms as a Charles Lee Ray disorder. What unfolds is a sexual thriller with plenty of blood spilled and skin revealed, exactly what the Squad was hoping for.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

ROLE PLAY MOVIE REVIEW

Role Play starring Kaley Cuoco and David Oyelowo is a wholehearted attempt at making Cuoco an action star. On one hand, she’s a loving wife to her husband Dave (Oyelowo) and their two children. On the other, she’s secretly a professional assassin. When her lives collide, Dave is having trouble processing the situation and Cuoco is going to do whatever it takes to save her family. With her comedic chops and timing, it should be an easy transition… It falls way too flat unfortunately. It also can’t decide what the tone should be… Action/Comedy or Action/Drama. It flip flops a lot so be prepared to have a lot of “whaaaaa?” moments. It’s not all terrible though, when the drama hits, it hits hard. T.C., Kim, and Chad recommend maybe skipping this one and watching True Lies instead.

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

LIFT MOVIE REVIEW

Since this Netflix Kevin Hart heist movie about a crew of skilled thieves stealing a large amount of gold off a plane mid-flight feels like it was generated using AI, we thought about letting AI write the copy for it, however, after several attempts, it was clear that AI has yet to master the art of sarcasm. Describing the movie as “a thrilling heist film that follows the charismatic and quick-witted Kevin Hart as he channels his inner George Clooney’s Danny Ocean,” suggests that Hart is charismatic and/or quick-witted in this. And claiming “director F. Gary Gray seamlessly blends humor and high-stakes action,” suggests that this movie has high-stakes. Kimberly, Chad, and T.C. sit down to map out an intricate review of this robbery of time and millions of dollars in production money, and by the end of it, they may just have the perfect plan for a heist of their own.

ARGYLLE MOVIE REVIEW

From director Matthew Vaughn (The Kingsmen movies) and writer Jason Fuchs (Pan, Wonder Woman) and based on a book that probably doesn’t exist by a fictional person who has the name of the lead character of the film and is assuredly not secretly Taylor Swift, the spy spoof Argylle is here. Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) is a very successful writer of a series of spy novels about a spy called Argylle. In her fantasies, the master spy (Henry Cavill) is impossibly good looking and implausibly unkillable. He is backed up by a team including his right-hand man Wyatt (John Cena) and computer hacker Keira (Ariana DeBose). But Elly’s real life is quiet, spent largely at her gorgeous house with her beloved cat, writing furiously at future entries in her series. But one day on a train, a REAL spy shows up, a scruffy looking but ultra-badass Aidan (Sam Rockwell) who prevents her from being killed by a bevy of on-board assassins. He reveals that somehow in her books she has been predicting actual things going on in the spy world, and now the Dr. Evil of that world (Bryan Cranston, but Richard E. Grant in her fantasies) has put out the order to get her. But she has reasons to not trust Aidan either, especially considering that his reveal is ridiculous. And that’s the least ridiculous thing in this overlong, cliched, unfunny spy power fantasy spoof that Chris, Wright, Nathan, and Ben all kinda hated. Check out their review here.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point.
