HUMANE MOVIE REVIEW

Who knew that a Cronenberg could make a populist movie?! That’s what we get to some degree with Caitlin Cronenberg’s (daughter of filmmaker, David Cronenberg) first feature, Humane. Set in the not too distant future, the UN has decided due to environmental collapse that each country in the world needs to decrease their population by 20%. We follow the affluent York family headed by the patriarch Charles, Peter Gallagher, inviting his 4 children played by Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Allana Bale, and Sebastian Chacon to sudden dinner. In the midst of the 3rd course, Charles informs the brood that he and his current wife Dawn, Uni Park, have volunteered for the country’s new euthanasia program to provide a better future for the world and children. Emotions get out of control and as Dawn flees the scene, the special task force to carry out the volunteer program arrives but with only one body for their quota. Bob, Enrico Colantoni, makes it simple for the York clan, they need another body and they get to choose. With each character’s despicable past and wretched personality spilling over into a violent yet funny game of “who’s going to die”, this biting satire breezes by and shows off Cronenberg’s use of pacing, writing, cinematography, and directing. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. STAR WARS: THE BAD BATCH SEASON 3 REVIEW

In the aftermath of the Clone Wars, The Bad Batch follows Hunter, Cross Hair, Wrecker, Tech, and Echo, a unique squad of clone troopers with genetic mutations who resisted Order 66 and go on the run in the early days of the Galactic Empire. They are joined by Omega, a young female clone with unique qualities of her own found within her blood, which have made her extremely valuable to the Empire. The head of Project Necromancer, Dr. Hemlock, believes Omega’s blood could very well be the key to cloning the Emperor (though why anyone would do that strictly from a narrative perspective would be idiotic, right?) This final season sees the Batch separated, with Omega and Cross Hair captured on Mount Tantiss, and Hunter, Wrecker, and Echo searching far and wide for them, with cameos from some of the favorite faces of the Clone Wars era. Melina, Marco, and T.C. gather in the One Of Us Jedi Council Chambers to praise the series and the continued efforts of Dave Filoni to lay the retcon bricks to validate certain choices within the canon.

THE FALL GUY MOVIE REVIEW

While the track record for adapting really old tv shows into feature films has been…mixed, to say the least, director David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, John Wick) taking on The Fall Guy, which centered around a Hollywood stuntman, seems like a match made in heaven. Ryan Gosling plays Colt Seavers, the best stuntman in the business who stays busy being the go-to fill in for giant action star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Unfortunately for him, a big stunt goes wrong and leaves him laid up for a long time. He leaves the business as well as his romance with Jody (Emily Blunt) a camera operator he regularly worked with. But Jody finally gets her shot to direct, with Tom as the star of a big sci-fi action film, only Tom disappears. The film’s producer (Hannah Waddingham) convinces Colt to come back not only to be the primary stunt man again, but to try to track down what happened to Tom. But all Colt really cares about is reconnecting with Jody. She had already written him off but Colt is determined to apologize and do whatever she requires to give him another chance. Bad news for him is that there appears to be a lot of people willing to kill him to keep him from finding Tom. Chris, Spidermike, Alan, and Wright put the dots on their face and strap into the wirework suits to give this movie the review it deserves.

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. RIPLEY SERIES REVIEW

He had always understood the power of lies – how they could shape reality, how they could make people see what you wanted them to see. The Talented Mr. Ripley, written by Patricia Highsmith back in 1955, has seen many adaptations over the decades. This time around, Steven Zaillian is running the show presented by Netflix, as an 8 episode miniseries called simply Ripley. Thomas Ripley (Andrew Scott) is a con man, always looking for one more rube to pad his pockets but lately has been feeling like his house of cards is on the edge of tumbling down. Luckily, he’s approached by the parents of an old classmate who propose the perfect opportunity to get out of Dodge. Their son, Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn), has fallen in love with Europe and is living the bohemian life with his writer girlfriend Marge (Dakota Fanning). The Greenleafs wish for Thomas to travel to Rome and persuade there son Dickey to come home, all on their dime, all expenses paid. What then transpires is a bit of a crime spree involving a several stops through Europe, two private investigators (Maurizio Lombardi and Bokeem Woodbine) and one cat who’s seen it all. Bradly, Frank, and Melina discuss the importance of Patricia Highsmith’s work, give a run down of all the usual suspects who’ve stepped in the shoes of Mr. Ripley, and carefully dissect the thin line between transcendent works of art and the art of selling jeans.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. THE IDEA OF YOU MOVIE REVIEW

Anne Hathaway at 40. Man, do I feel old. Not as old as she feels though in the Amazon Prime Video movie The Idea of You. Anne plays single mom Solène. She splits time taking care of her teen daughter Izzy with her ex-husband while also running an art gallery. One day just as she’s leaving to go on a camping trip by herself, her husband pulls up with daughter and her friends in tow and tells her that she has to take the kids to Coachella, because ‘something came up’. Exasperated, she nonetheless steps up and goes to spend the time in as much seclusion as is possible to find at a gigantic music fest. Unexpectedly, a meet-cute comes out of nowhere (well, maybe not so unexpectedly, it IS an Anne Hathaway film) and it’s with a 24 year old mega-rock star Hayes (Nicholas Galitzine) who apparently prefers the older ladies. He chases, she demurs, but what are ya gonna do? He’s hot, rich, and charming as hell. Soon it’s a whirlwind romance but what will happen when it goes public and her daughter finds out? Ok, it’s not much of a plot but as always, Hathaway brings a lot of charm and Michael Showalter could direct this sort of affair with both hands tied behind his back. Chris, Alan, and Frank don’t all see eye-to-eye on The Idea of You but it’s alway fun to hear the HSR guys disagree.

FALLOUT SERIES REVIEW

Hey there vault dwellers. I know it’s been a bit much being confined to a Vault-Tec vault for over 2 centuries, but we think it’s time that you zipped up your jumpsuit and wander out to the Wasteland. There’s raiders, rad roaches, and these cute little things called Yao Guai (basically giant, mutated black bears with a constant stick up their ass). So take that vault-schooled brain of yours out in the Wasteland and make shit happen. On the way you’ll meet a Knight of The Brotherhood of Steel and a bounty hunting ghoul, hopefully you have enough time in between shooting each other to make peace… or blow each other’s heads off… the Wasteland does not care. While this could be just talking about any one of the popular RPG video games from this series, now we’re discussing the new and shiny Amazon Prime Video live-action adaptation of them. Starring Ella Purnell as Lucy, a Vault dweller who has made her way into the wasteland for the first time determined to get back her father (Kyle MacLachlan) from raiders who took him. With our review, watch out for Marco, Kimberly, and Chad… they were assimilated into a raider group and don’t respond to their names anymore… but if you got jet and caps, they’ll find a way to “borrow” it from you.

Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

BOY KILLS WORLD MOVIE REVIEW

Take one part chiseled action hero, one part post-apocalyptic ‘Running Man‘ wasteland, and the 3rd project Sharlto Copley has been in this year. What do you get? Boy Kills World starring our ever favorite Pennywise the clown, Bill Skarsgard! Skarsgard stars as Boy, a deaf-mute man riddled with grief and vengeance seeking right the wrongs committed to his family as a child by the evil Van Der Koy family. Famke Janssen plays the matriarch, Hilda, who commands her adult children (Michelle Dockery & Brett Gelman) to carry out her vicious annual “Culling” (very Hunger Games-esque). As Boy trains with his mentor played by Yayan Ruhian, he becomes restless, jumpstarts his plan of revenge, and sets to take out the Van Der Koy’s one-by-one in a bloody fashion. The real trick that this film has is that the non-verbal boy has an internal voice played by H. Jon Benjamin which brings insight into the boy’s past and over confidence in completing his goal. Another nice surprise is the Van Der Koy’s top assassin June27 played the breakout star of Happy Death Day, Jessica Rothe. With all of these elements, does Boy Kills World stick the landing as a solid entry into the action film world? REBEL MOON PART 2: THE SCARGIVER REVIEW

Round 2! Zack Snyder is back with the second part of his sci-fi “epic”, Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver. We last left Kora (Sofia Boutella) and her band of mighty warriors on the titular rebel moon, Veldt. They are welcomed by the thankful villages saving them from the tyrannical empire known as the “Realm”. Kora and Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), grow closer and the rest of the returning cast (Djimon Hounsou, Bae Doona, Staz Nair, Elise Duffy) acclimate to their new home. Yet, evil rises once again as slain villian from part 1, Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein) is resurrected and sets a course of vengeance against Kora and team. This second entry tends to focus more on slow-mo wheat gathering and lazy exposition dumps rather than earned character building or anything new to bring to the genre. As most Snyder films, the last 40 minutes ends up becoming an orgy of laser blasts and slow-mo yelling to wrap up the saga of Kora’s Scargiver. Listen as Wright, Rae, and Neil return to complete the story of Rebel Moon and ponder if this was worth a watch to begin with.
