GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE MOVIE REVIEW

The time for busting has resumed, only whether it’ll make you feel good certainly seems pretty polarizing this time around. Ok, really every time around when The Ghostbusters have another film, even, apparently in retrospect now, the original. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire follows the events of 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife which brought back some original crew, but mainly focused on the granddaughter of Egon, Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), her mom (Carrie Coon), brother (Finn Wolfhard), and their new science teacher/mom love interest Gary (Paul Rudd). Now, thanks to the largesse of post-credits reveal rich guy Winston (Ernie Hudson) they live in the original firehouse, drive the original car (with some upgrades) and bust ghosts in NYC. But dickless Walter Peck (William Atherton) is back and now he’s the mayor and wants to shut down the bustin’ as much as ever. And there’s a new threat on the horizon, a god that much as the title suggests, has a whole ice vibe going, and could spell the end of everything. Murray and Aykroyd return again as does Annie Potts, now upgraded from secretary to full Ghostbuster, and Frozen Empire does everything it can to try to give you all the hits to your dopamine receptors by referencing the original. But does that do the trick or is it all just kinda cloying? Chris, Wright, Spidermike, and Marco have some different feelings about it but ultimately just have a good time discussing the film.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. AMERICAN DREAMER MOVIE REVIEW

John Steinbeck once said “Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.”. American Dreamer is a film about Phil (Peter Dinklage) who is a writer/college professor who wants it all: The hot wife, the fast car, & a little mansion near the coast he can call his own. His realtor Dell (Matt Dillon) wants his big dream to crash back to reality and ponder some purchases in his price range. As luck would have it, Phil finds a listing for a 10 million dollar mansion at the bonkers-low market price of thousands. Astrid (Shirley MacLaine) will sell him the house for peanuts, no strings attached, if he allows her to pass away in the beautiful home. Oh, did I mention that there actually ARE strings attached!? From writer’s block and an annoying work colleague named Craig (Danny Pudi), saucy encounters with consenting adult student Clair (Michelle Mylett) and two dreamed up bikini clad twin muses played by Rebecca Olson, Phil will discover that the best kind of dreaming is living. Bradly, Frank, and Melina praise Peter Dinklage and Shirley MacLaine’s work together while also discussing the faults and failings of the film as a whole separate from the legendary thespians. Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

HISTORY OF EVIL MOVIE REVIEW

It’s the not-to-distant future… the year 2045… and guess what ya’ll? Christian fascists have taken over the United States. And if you’re white you’re right. Everyone else is either a pledged convert to the cause, or shot dead. Alegre Dyer is the leader of the Resistance who has recently escaped from jail. Along with her family and a guide, she is taken to a creepy ass house to wait for an extraction. What is supposed to be 24 hours ends up being weeks, and the father starts having visions brought on by the house. It’s not a terrible movie, it just needed more to cross the finish line. Great camera work and post, just a big concept to bite off and chew. T.C., Lewayne, and Chad are here today for a discussion. It’s not as bad as some online trolls are rating it, so we recommend a viewing before you rip it apart.

DEATH AND OTHER DETAILS SERIES REVIEW

Pay attention! Even the slightest detail can lead to the most damning results. Every coincidence a bread crumb yet to reveal itself on the trail to a gingerbread house of justice. Hulu presents Death and Other Details, a weekly episodic murder mystery starring Mandy Patinkin and Violett Beane. Imogen (Beane) is an orphan on vacation with her wealthy adopted family on a luxury ocean liner. Her rest & relaxation is ruined by the confidence and self-congratulatory swagger of Rufus Cotesworth (Patinkin) the world’s greatest detective. As a young girl, Rufus mentored Imogen on the ways of deducing and deduction while pursuing Imogen’s mother’s killer. When the trail froze, Rufus without warning went away, leaving Imogen with all the skill but none of the evidence to solve the case herself. Now over a decade later, the two find themselves in a murder mystery conspiracy that trots the globe and could lead to the very unsolved murder that created their once powerful teacher-student friendship. Mindy assembles the suspects Bradly and Lewayne in the accusation parlour of One Of Us. They discuss the big shoes to fill of Agatha Christie and whether or not Hulu has an innocently boring series to help people through their day, a total killer show, or perhaps the third option, something in between!

SPACEMAN MOVIE REVIEW

When you see that the director, cinematographer, and composer from Chernobyl have gotten back together to work on a feature film about a lonely cosmonaut on a solo space mission toward a mysterious cosmic body that has suddenly appeared just beyond Jupiter, and a story about a man who, in his loneliness not only must face his past, his fears, and his trauma, but does so in the presence of an alien life form who boards his ship in an attempt to befriend him, you would rightly think you’ll be in good hands with this film. However, when that film is a straight to Netflix movie, that might be a red flag for you. And when you see that Adam Sandler stars in it, that might also give you caution. However, do take a moment to remember that Adam Sandler has turned in some rather extraordinary dramatic performances in Uncut Gems, Punch Drunk Love, and a half dozen other movies in his career. When the Sandman takes on a serious project, he often impresses. Add to this cast list Paul Dano and recently Academy Award nominated Carrie Mulligan, your intrigue might start outweighing your worry. Well that’s exactly what the Screener Squad sat down to discuss with Wright, T.C., and Ryan gathered in the One Of Us satellite orbiting above us all.

LOVE LIES BLEEDING MOVIE REVIEW

Rose Glass, the director of the hit psychological horror film Saint Maud, has turned her gaze to film noir, albeit in a tangentially Cronenbergian fashion, with her second film Love Lies Bleeding, and trust us, this is no sophomore slump. Set in 1989, a gym manager named Lou (Kristen Stewart) meets and falls for a bodybuilder named Jackie (Katy O’Brian) passing through town on her way to a competition in Vegas. Kristen has gotten a temporary job working at a shooting range owned by Lou’s criminal father Lou Senior (Ed Harris) and to get it, she had to have sex with Kristen’s skeezy brother-in-law J.J. (Dave Franco). That’s the beginning setup and I REALLY don’t want to spoil how this film gets into brutal murders, steroid-fueled rages, horrific hallucinations, and more. You need to trust Chris, Sarah, Wright, and Beau, who all gave this a perfect or near-perfect score, and go see it for yourself. Love Lies Bleeding is destined to be enshrined among A24’s finest releases.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER SERIES REVIEW

Netflix just isn’t gonna be satisfied with One Piece of successful anime adaptation. They want the whole cake, the bakery, the street it’s on, eventually the world. Avatar: The Last Airbender was Nickelodeon’s 2005 three season animated series about a young boy who could control the elements of earth, water, fire, and air. In 2010, M. Night. Shyamalan would take a crack at a live action adaptation which would result in many ho hum films to follow after a prison break from director jail. How does Netflix fare second at bat to adapt this beloved IP? Out the gate, the show takes big chances by beginning episode one before the fire nation attacks and young Ang (Gordon Cormier) has been told he is the Avatar and does not handle the burden well. The night of the comet celebration he flees responsibility into a storm as the fire nation attacks the nomadic air temple. A hundred years pass and two siblings of the water tribe, Sokka (Ian Ousley) and a water bender named Katara (Kiawentiio) chance upon the legendary avatar frozen in an iceberg. Nearby, a fire nation ship captained by Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) and skippered by his Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) are on a quest to locate the Avatar and bring honour back to Prince Zuko’s name. Ang must decide if his new companions will be friends who flee the march of oppression or stand firm as allies against the fascism of the fire nation. Bradly, Harmoni, and Jordan discuss their history with the series, what translates well and what doesn’t work at all, and decide whether or not this legend deserves to continue.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. ORION AND THE DARK MOVIE REVIEW

All tucked into the One Of Us bunk beds, Mike, Chad, and T.C. have a whispered conversation about the newest Netflix/Dreamworks animated film Orion and the Dark. Orion is a severely anxious 11-year-old kid with an endless list of irrational fears, including toilets overflowing, public speaking, getting beat up by the school bully, and being rejected by his school crush, Sally, at an upcoming planetarium field trip. One night, after a sudden blackout, Orion faces his biggest fear of all: The Dark. In fact, he’s so afraid of it, that Dark knows Orion all too well. He is the most scared of the dark kid in the world! Utterly fed up, Dark kidnaps the terrified little Orion for a worldwide adventure through the night. Dark hopes Orion will overcome his fears by experiencing the benefits and wonders of nighttime. During their travels, Dark introduces Orion to fellow night entities Sleep, Insomnia, Quiet, Unexplained Noises, and Sweet Dreams. Little by little, over the course of his adventure, Orion learns more about himself and the things that scare him. Simple as that sounds, there’s one additional element to this tale. This kid’s book has been adapted into this movie by none other than Charlie Kaufman, writer of Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Does that mean this elevates itself over other Dreamworks animated faire? The Squad has their divided thoughts.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack).
