Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can)

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Previously guested on podcasts Blood Over Texas, Threequel Club, Trash in the Can, Retro Movie Roundtable, and Nerds with Mics.

THE UNION MOVIE REVIEW

When freedom is hanging off the ledge of a ten story building and is quickly losing its grip you only have a split second to send the right agent for the job. Do you want the pampered nepo baby with a major in economics and a bachelors in debate that can write up the appropriate forms to be approved by congress to set up a vote on September twenty who gives a flying fifth with the house of representatives? No! You get a salt of the earth manly man who refuses to skip leg day and would parkour up any department store to give freedom a helping hand and a fist bump! Netflix presents a film directed by Julian Farino starring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry, The Union. Mike McKenna (Mark Wahlberg) is a blue collar tough guy who loves his mama, his home town, and his family. Roxanne Hall (Halle Berry) is a deep cover special operative serving the United States in the spy agency called The Union. After a failed mission resulting in the loss of top agent Nick Faraday (Mike Colter), Roxanne and agency boss Tom Brennan (J. K. Simmons) suspect a nefarious foreign enemy has the down-low on all their informant’s info. They’ll have to recruit, train, and baptize by fire a man that no one would ever suspect. Roxanne knows that the red-blooded, cross-wearing, sweat of the brow, hard working Mike McKenna is the best damn manly man man that The Union needs! Also, they used to date in High School. Bradly and Frank set aside their differences and choose for the good of us all to work together and review the Red Notice release of 2024. Frank gives rare insight on movie stars and their place on streaming services in a world of instant gratification while Bradly mispronounces Halle Berry even after being corrected. So if you like your steak rare and your trucks lifted then have a listen!

As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE MOVIE REVIEW

After many, many, MANY, many many attempts to get a sequel to 1988’s smash cult hit Beetlejuice off the ground, Tim Burton finally got somebody to pony up the dough all these decades later. Everyone is back (except for Jeffrey Jones because of…well, look it up) and it’s a family reunion at the old house on the hill. Papa Deetz has died and Delia (Catherine O’Hara) has gathered up her daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder), granddaughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega), and a collection of largely lineless extras for an elaborate arty gothic funeral. Lydia is now a television psychic cursed with the ‘gift’ of constantly being able to see the dead, but exploited by her producer/boyfriend Rory (Justin Theroux). Astrid goes to a private school where she’s not exactly the most popular girl and wants nothing to do with her mother Lydia, who she thinks of as a big fake since she can’t seem to be able to communicate with her missing/presumably dead father. Also, there’s way too much other stuff going on, like Willem Dafoe as a ghost actor who used to play cops and now is a ghost cop, Monica Bellucci as the vengeful ghost-killing ghost who is seeking Beetlejuice, Arthur Conti as a hip young neighbor kid who Astrid finds herself interested in. There’s a lot of subplots here. But mainly what you need to know is that Keaton is here and doing the same schtick and so is director Tim Burton and if that sounds great to you, well have at it. Chris, Wright, Nathan, and Marco have had enough.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

THE FRONT ROOM MOVIE REVIEW

Don’t you just hate it when the in-laws move in? In The Front Door, this Mother-In-Law (Kathryn Hunter) is one straight from Hell. First time Directors, Max and Sam Eggers, have produced a film that at first glance appears to be another taut horror flick released by their brother’s (Robert Eggers) favorite distributor A24, but underneath the veil of its horror premise comes an oddly dark comedy. Belinda (Brandy Norwood) and Norman (Andrew Burnap) are expecting their new child as Norman’s father passes away. As Belinda pushes Norman to reconnect with his family and specifically his step-mother Solange, we see why he was so reluctant to see her pretty much immediately. With the promise of her vast fortune as she passes away, Solange proposes to stay with the soon-to-be parents so she can impart her legacy with her grandchild. Tensions are raised as soon as Solange takes the baby’s room for herself and she and Belinda start to spar over food preparation, upbringing, and elderly care. What comes next is a series of social-horror situations that become shrewdly hilarious where Kathryn Hunter’s performance carries the movie on her hunched shoulders. Wright, Chris, Marco, and Alan discuss whether or not The Front Room sticks the landing with its handling of tone or craps the bed with its over-the-top premise.

HELL HOLE MOVIE REVIEW

They’re icky and they’re gross-y. Tedious and dull-y. They’re into butt stuff-y. It’s the Adams Family, the film collective behind such films as Hellbender, The Hatred, and The Deeper You Dig, brings us their newest low-budget horror flick, Hell Hole. A group of frackers and scientists embark on a new project deep in Serbia where they accidentally uncover a living French soldier that is the host to a very slimy creature looking to take over anyone that gets in its way. John (John Adams) and Emily (Toby Poser) lead the fracking team and try to uncover the parasite’s intentions with disastrous results. Sort of like The Thing with gross out humor, Hell Hole never quite reaches the heights it’s aiming for with its shoddy editing and script problems. Wright, Jordan, and Lewayne try to see the good where they can, but they are ultimately caught in the bowels of The Adams Family’s Hell Hole.

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER SERIES REVIEW

ATTENTION! Attention all listeners, there have been reports of a mysterious bat-like creature stalking the streets of our fair Gotham City. Be on the lookout for this Caped Crusader! From the powerhouse collective of Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves, Ed Brubaker, and J.J. Abrams comes Amazon Prime’s animated series, Batman: Caped Crusader. Inspired by the Golden Age era of comics, the series reimagines Batman and his mythology during the early days of Bruce Wayne’s crime-fighting career as he battles crime and corruption throughout Gotham City. Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. THE LAST BREATH MOVIE REVIEW

Back in ye olden days, a ship would go out to see and often return with tales of adventure and massive booty. But alas, what if the captain and the hardy crew did not return to dock? Could the ship have sank, and what of the hearty crew? Perhaps a beast of the sea sank its teeth into their flesh and bone? Sometimes the navigators of the sea are able to find these ships and search their remains, and somethings those ancient ships are actually WWII battleships. Directed by Joachim Hedén and featuring a posthumous performance by legendary character actor Julian Sands, The Last Breath tells the tale of five friends. They are taking a chance on adventure with a scuba tour of a sunken ship found by Levi (Julian Sands) and Noah (Jack Parr). What would seem completely unsafe could result in beaucoup bucks for Levi and Noah. They could pay all their debts and maybe one of them, Sam (Kim Spearman), will find that true wealth is in falling back in love with your ex. In the labyrinth of historial steel, Noah and his fellow scuba diving friends have to band together in order to find a way out before they either drown or become fish food for great white sharks. Brad, Melina, and Frank take to the high seas of opinions: What’s better, stock footage of sharks spliced into film? CGI fins and gills? Or practice puppets being waved around by the stunt team? Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. BLINK TWICE MOVIE REVIEW

It’s hard to know how to market a film that depends on a giant twist without spoiling the surprise. It definitely feels like Blink Twice is one of those, where the trailers make it look like some kind of slasher on an island with beautiful people. But what if I told you that Chris, Frank, Marco, and Wright ALL gave this some of the most positive reviews of any movie this year? The story follows Frida (Naomi Ackie) who is kinda obsessed with this once me-too’d billionaire tech bro named Slater King (Channing Tatum) who is currently doing the apology tour. Seemingly contrite to his core, he has apparently left most of his previous shenanigans behind and largely lives on his private island out of the limelight. When Frida and her best friend Jess (Alia Shawkat) are catering a private event for Slater, Frida and the former bad-boy have a meet-cute, and the two girls get invited back to his island for relaxation, margaritas and ???. Once there, it truly seems like a slice of paradise. But after awhile it’s like, how long have we been here? We’ve all had that vacation ‘lost in time’ feeling but it seems much more pronounced here and eventually, disturbing. A solid crew of actors playing the other visitors to the island seem oblivious but something is very wrong. Check out your critics doing their level best not to spoil anything, until they announce full-spoiler review…because you kinda have to in order to discuss the dominant themes of Blink Twice which are considerably deeper and more interesting than they appear from the outside.
