Saturday Night Movie Review

In the midst of its 50th season on television, Saturday Night Live is without question a staple in American comedy. It’s hard to imagine that the comedy juggernaut was almost an impressive disaster right up until it aired on October 11th, 1975. Saturday Night, directed by Jason Reitman, tells the story of the ninety minutes before the first episode aired and the complete chaos behind the scenes. Led by Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LaBelle), we watch him traverse through a bloated show, an unruly cast, a disinterested crew, and an executive (Willem Dafoe) praying for him to fail. Some of the iconic cast gets to shine here most noticeably Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith), Dan Aykroyd (Dylan O’Brien), Garrett Morris (Lamorne Morris), and an understated John Belushi (Matt Wood). Michaels does at least have a steady support by his side in his wife Rosie Shuster (wonderfully played by Rachel Sennott) even when his producer Dick Ebersol (Cooper Hoffman) is breathing down his neck. The film makes use of the entire studio and brings everything to life. Reitman seems to have taken some notes from Aaron Sorkin and Paul Thomas Anderson with the way he shoots the minutes before air with its constant walk-and-talks and background blunders. Wright, Mike, Marco, and Nathan discuss their love and admiration for the legendary show and if the richness of the source material shines through Saturday Night.

When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). AZRAEL MOVIE REVIEW

Some time after the Rapture, we find civilization in disarray and no one can speak. Azrael follows the titular character (Samara Weaving) and her partner Kenan (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), as they escape imprisonment from a female-led community of religious zealots. As she’s recaptured, she is due to be sacrificed by an evil entity, but as luck would have it, she makes a narrow escape. Directed by E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills) and written by Simon Barrett (You’re Next, The Guest), Azrael takes the silent approach to a “chase/horror/thriller” with beautifully shot scenery and compelling physical acting. Since we follow Azrael throughout the film and have no dialogue to understand her character more deeply, the film relies heavily on Weaving’s reactions and choices. The film does trust the audience quite a bit when it comes to the mythic horror that follows and it works for the most part. Wright, Mike, and Drew do have a lot to say, though, about Azrael and discuss whether or not they would ever want to speak of it again.

HIS THREE DAUGHTERS MOVIE REVIEW

Spooky Scary Fall is upon us and nothing brings about the fall of all things like the number one undisputed King of Horror, Death. Vincent is going to die. From writer director Azazel Jacobs comes a Netflix feature length awards season prospect His Three Daughters. Vincent’s three daughters from two separate marriages must gather as one family to see him off peacefully with respect and dignity as the end of his battle with cancer nears. Katie (Carrie Coon) must always be in control or else. She butts heads with the doctor, the guests, and especially her sister. Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) has been with her father the whole time at his apartment and is struggling to deal with the big emotions of losing a parent and with his other two daughters only visiting to say goodbye. Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) just wants everybody to get along as she struggles with expressing the unbreakable bond of sisterhood and having a cherished husband and daughter back home waiting for her. With the stage set for the inevitable, the three siblings must decide if they’ll have a future together once their father is gone. Bradly, Frank, and Jordan welcome you to attend the service of this film review. Things get personal and heavy but also light hearted, much like the film itself, as the three critics contemplate who will be with them at the end of all things.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. MEGALOPOLIS MOVIE REVIEW

Once heralded as one of the most gifted filmmakers of all time, Francis Ford Coppola has finally achieved his nearly 40 year dream in releasing his epic vision, Megalopolis. The film is jam packed full of incredible actors and some problematic ones. It is led by Adam Driver who plays Cesar Catilina, an architect who’s trying to build a utopia in the fictional city, Megalopolis. With pushback from Mayor Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) and jealous cousin Clodio (Shia LaBeouf), Cesar struggles to work through politics and his own grief to achieve his dreams. Yet, a shining light comes through with Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel) who witnesses Cesar’s gift in stopping time and realizes that if he has the ability to achieve his dream then a utopia is within reach. Wow Platinum (Aubrey Plaza) becomes a romantic foil as Cesar and Julia develop their relationship and try to sabotage the plans to build Megalopolis out of spite. The film has already been widely criticized for its flimsy script, wild acting choices, and less than stellar direction, but Coppola did tell the story he wanted to tell. Full of political intrigue, sweeping romance, and awkward boners, Megalopolis doesn’t quite achieve what it was setting out to do. Wright, Nathan, and Marco have an oddly calm discussion about the divisive film.

Folie à Deux Movie Review

The Clown Prince of Crime has taken on Batman, the Justice League, and the Gotham Police time and time again, but his newest foe…musicals? Joaquin Phoenix is back in his Oscar winning performance as Arthur Fleck in Joker: Folie a Deux. Todd Phillips’ approach to the 2019 film was an even grittier take on the character pulling from various sources primarily from Scorsese films and it paid off big time. This time around with the anticipated sequel, Phillips wanted to deconstruct the character even further and turn the film into a full blown jukebox musical. Joining Phoenix is none other than pop icon Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (or Harley Quinn to the fans). The film takes place in 2 distinct settings; Arkham Asylum and a courtroom. Arkham, the iconic prison where Batman’s rogue gallery primarily inhabits, is where Fleck & Quinn have a chaotic meet-cute where they break out into song and dance and build their mad love for each other. The courtroom, though, is where the film loses its footing. The film tries to posit the idea that maybe The Joker isn’t crazy after all and is just a serial killer. It becomes more baffling by the minute as Lee and Arthur go back and forth through fantastical musical numbers and their on and off again romance. Wright, Nathan, and Beau struggled with the film’s tone and approach to the iconic character. Listen as they discuss Joker: Folie a Deux!

KITE MAN: HELL YEAH! SERIES REVIEW

When you are a villain that’s mocked by the C-list and even ridiculed by the most obscure Robins, sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name. Kite Man (Matt Oberg) is an off-again never-again romantic interest from the Adult Swim DC dark comedy show Harley Quinn. With a new found love named Golden Glider (Stephanie Hsu) Chuck is ready to settle down with his doting darling and purchase a bar from Noonan (Michael Bank). The original owner sticks around but is glad to have sold his franchise for 10 million dollars. This animated sitcom sets the bar as a base of operations for several cameos. You’ll see Lex Luthor (Lance Riddick), The Queen of Fables (Janelle James), Moe Dubelz (Michael Imperioli) quirky gothic intern Malice (Natasia Demetriou) everybody’s favorite Bane (James Adomian) and even Darkseid (Keith David). Why Darkseid? Through a very calculated and chaotic turn of events, the source of the anti-life equation may be connected to one of the specials at the bar. Bradly, Dogget, and Mike McAllister discuss their admiration of the original Harley Quinn show, the surprising amount of evolved side gags, and how all of these one-off D-listers could have such heart, character growth, and depth. They muse over the success of a story based around two characters in love who are unapologetically into each other, and also praise the encyclopedic knowledge of one of us: our very own Spider Mike who may or may not make an appearance this week with saucy details about the anti-life equation.

Hey persons, it’s your favorite canine Dogget! As many of you know, I don’t identify as a critic as much as a classy shock jock. That being said, I do my best to give all of you a well-balanced review filled with my true opinions and hopefully a few laughs. Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). THE CREEP TAPES SERIES REVIEW

After two successful and highly thought of found footage movies, Mark Duplass as Josef with Patrick Brice back in the director’s chair return to tell more stories of the strangest serial killer in The Creep Tapes. Going from films to a six-episode Shudder tv series may seem like an ‘uh-oh’ situation. However, the series branches out in some bizarre and very entertaining directions. And yes, people keep getting killed. Chris and Wright only got to see the first three episodes of The Creep Tapes at Fantastic Fest as a secret screening, but they’re definitely going to be watching the rest of it when it airs.

ESCAPE FROM THE 21ST CENTURY MOVIE REVIEW

Three High School best friends, after an encounter with some toxic waste, get a super-inconvenient superpower. Whenever they sneeze, their bodies in 1999 fall unconscious and their minds go into their own bodies twenty years in the future. This also apparently wipes out the personalities that exist in the future permanently, because when they go back to 1999 consciousness, their future bodies fall unconscious. And the future is not bright. Mix this with psychedelic visuals, bizarre connections to the game Street Fighter 2, and lots of over-the-top action, and you have the Japanese film Escape From The 21st Century. DADDY’S HEAD MOVIE REVIEW

A young boy named Isaac whose father has just died, and who not long before had to deal with the death of his mother, is withdrawn and upset. Laura (Julia Brown) had recently married Isaac’s father and now as the sole caregiver without much of a connection with the boy even before his father’s untimely death, is unsure what to do. Alone in a modern house but deep in the woods, the scenario is already creepy by default. But when strange lights, smoke, and…something…that appears to have the father’s face starts appearing first to Isaac and then to Laura as well, the creep factor amps up exponentially. Chris and Wright take a look at Daddy’s Head and hide their own heads under their blankets.

BETTER MAN MOVIE REVIEW

Oh My God, It Was Earth All Along, You Finally Made a Monkey Out of Me. It was a missed opportunity not to have iconic singer Robbie Williams belt out a version of the Troy McClure song in the biopic about his life Better Man. Why? Because the part of Robbie Williams is played by a chimpanzee. This is not a joke. Really. Ok, a CG chimpanzee but still. It’s a bold choice, to be sure. And while Robbie’s story doesn’t in and of itself break a lot of new ground in the musical biopic genre, the film Better Man, for Chris and Wright, stood out as one of the best examples of it.
