Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can)

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

Alan Galinsky (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born and raised in Texas, Alan Galinsky is a lifetime movie fan. As a youth, he would rent multiple movies every weekend and go to the theater for the latest releases, and that pace has remained steady. When Alan isn’t watching movies, you can find him talking about movies. When he’s not talking about movies, you can find him playing music in the band Delicate Boys.

VENOM: THE LAST DANCE MOVIE REVIEW

Unbelievably, Venom: The Last Dance is the third film in the series to get made, starring Tom Hardy in the dual roles of Eddie Brock and his charming but homicidal alien symbiote Venom. This time he’s on the run from nearly everybody. The law wants him because after the events of the last film it is believed that he is responsible for the death of a policeman, Mulligan (Stephen Graham). The military want him (at least the military working out of Area 51) because they have basically retooled their whole thing just to deal with symbiotes. And then this evil guy in space called Knull wants him because he’s got some mystical thingamajiggie in him that will free the evil guy from millenia of being ensnared by the symbiotes, a race of aliens he created and then turned on him (read the Donny Cates comic run, it’s much better). The big threat here is the evil guy indirectly because he’s sent these nigh-unkillable giant murderous bug aliens that track Venom but only when he’s in full suit form. So you get a lot more Tom Hardy in this chapter, and he’s bafflingly on his way to NYC (with the whole world looking for him) although the entire film pretty much takes place in the desert. Which, I suppose, is why we all agreed that this was the trilogy chapter with by far the best CG (saving bucks everywhere else). Chris, Wright, and Kim have some reasonable things to say about Venom: The Last Dance in their review. Nathan speaks words as well.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

THE PLATFORM 2 MOVIE REVIEW

“Hunger can explain many acts. It can be said that all vile acts are done to satisfy hunger” – Maxim Gorky.

Netflix presents The Platform 2. Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia and starring Milena Smit and Hovik Keuchkerian. The Platform 2 is a pre-re-Sequel that further explores the atrocities people are willing to commit in order to rise above their class and punish those beneath their station. Perempuán (Smit) is trapped on the 24th level of a pit. Imprisoned with her on level 24 is Zamiatin (Hovik). Both have pasts that imply the pit is a punishment by some kind of fascist governing body. Above and below them on different levels are two people also kept in this towering prison. In the middle of each floor, a deep hole reaches down to every level and a platform that lowers to each one every day. Upon the platform is a magnificent feast of food, each delicacy chosen by the captives of the pit. Will they take what they have chosen and leave the rest behind or will those above forsake those below by taking a lion’s share? Be careful in your choices, you never know what number platform you’ll wake up on as the endless days go by. Bradly, Nate, and Drew feast upon the text and subtext of this Netflix horror sequel, discuss what times they would choose to add to the platform, and whether this successful film franchise needs more sequels.

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

GOODRICH MOVIE REVIEW

What if you were so into your life’s work that the life you were living happened as if you were on the outside looking in? What if you were SO into your work that you’d often step away from the outside looking in completely? Written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, Goodrich is a slice of life story about a man whose excuses come first, and family comes second. Andy Goodrich (Michael Keaton), whose career as an art dealer has sidelined his life, has just discovered that his beloved wife and partner has checked herself into rehab. His daughter Grace (Mila Kunis) from a first marriage doesn’t seem to be surprised about this bombshell. As Andy’s life slowly unravels he calls on Grace to help him struggle to keep it all together. Unbeknownst to him, Grace has her own struggles with a spouse and first child on the way. The Goodrich Art expo is on the edge of financial ruin and his current marriage is driving down the road to splitsville. It will take more then leaning on Grace to become the father and husband he never was. Bradly, Neil, and Rae discuss this unique character study of a pretty charming and nice guy who’s made selfish choices, how long overdue conversations can grow into the biggest wedges between friends and family, and how Michael Keaton is having a fantastic year with old and new roles alike.

WOLFS MOVIE REVIEW

George Clooney and Brad Pitt star in this movie you might’ve seen a trailer for a few months back. Unless you live in New York or Los Angeles, and knew about the singular week it was actually in theaters. Now, the only way you’re watching this snappy action-comedy thriller is with that rare Apple Plus subscription. These two handsome and endlessly charismatic leading men play handsome and charismatic fixers in the seedy (and yet still fabulous) underworld of New York City. Wolfs is written and directed by Jon Watts as an excuse for its two leads to riff on their own personas as they begrudgingly work together to cover up a murder by a prominent city figure (Amy Ryan). They are good at what they do, and they do it alone. Having to team up is not part of the job description. They are loners. They are shadows in the night. They are… not so different from each other. Melina, Drew, and T.C. sit down in the One Of Us Tarantino Diner Set and fire off their thoughts about this come and gone flick that probably should’ve come and stayed for a while before getting dumped on streaming. But hey, it’s got a sequel greenlit, so perhaps this will see a growing fanbase over time.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Drew Tinnin (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Deliberations of Doom)

Drew Tinnin is a Rondo Award nominated interviewer and critic who has worked at SiriusXM’s Fangoria Radio and Fangoria magazine in NYC, as well as the London-based Dazed Digital. Currently a regular contributor to the Dread Central Network, he’s excited to join up with some old friends and other film fans on One of Us as a new contributor to Screener Squad.

Smile 2 Movie Review

The saying “a smile is worth a thousand words” doesn’t even begin to describe the horror in Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 hit Smile. Smile 2 takes place 6 days after where the last film left us and we’re following the lone survivor of the Smile entity, Joel (Kyle Gallner). Since he has a very limited amount of time before the entity takes over his body and makes him kill himself, he tries to murder a criminal in front of another so the curse can be lifted. Of course it doesn’t go as planned and the lone person in the room, Lewis (Lukas Gage), witnessed the horrific events that follow. Cut to Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), a pop sensation that recently fell from grace is on the rise once more on a new tour that is bound to bring her back to the limelight. As she’s struggling with her own demons, she makes a call to her old friend Lewis to score some pain killers. Yet, wouldn’t you know it? Lewis has that pesky Smile entity looming around and one thing leads to another, Sky is now next on the list. With inventive scares and horrific imagery, Finn’s direction is in high gear with this sequel. As we follow Skye struggling with the kickoff of the tour and her mother (Rosemarie Dewitt) breathing down her neck, the Smile entity almost takes delight in torturing someone who has so many eyes on her at all times. Listen as Wright, Alan, Ben, and Nathan discuss the film and wonder if this horror sequel holds a candle to the original or stands tall and smiles as it moves forward.

A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. WE LIVE IN TIME MOVIE REVIEW

Who knew that what the world needed right now is the ridiculous amount of charisma of Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield in a romance? Directed by John Crowley (Brooklyn, Boy A), We Live In Time tells the story of Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield) and how their car crash-cute goes from sweeping romance to a devastatingly bittersweet end. Since their story is told in non-linear fashion, we find out very quickly that Almut has cancer and now has to deal with the fact that she may not live long enough to do everything she’s ever wanted to do. After finding out the news, she pitches to Tobias that maybe she doesn’t want to go through the hell that is chemotherapy and live their best lives together with their insanely cute daughter Ella (Grace Delaney). Resistant at first, Tobias then agrees and accepts the cards Almut has been dealt and the film moves back and forth with them through time. We go through ups and downs in the relationship over the years where we witness how utterly charming and sexy Pugh and Garfield are together. Almut’s ego does get in the way though as she’s one of the UK’s top chefs and has the chance to compete in an international competition. This longing to be the best puts the family’s plan in jeopardy, but the way Crowley handles the sensitive subject is graceful. Wright, Kate, and Nathan discuss We Live In Time and tell if they merely liked it or absolutely loved it.

He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Kate Chambers (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. In her spare time, you can find her either down at the barn with her noble steed Jazz, watching as many movies as possible (often at work), cuddling with her pair of black cats and writing horror scripts, or nursing a beer in any available body of water… or doing Duolingo, where she’s currently on a 1000+ day streak.

Saturday Night Movie Review

In the midst of its 50th season on television, Saturday Night Live is without question a staple in American comedy. It’s hard to imagine that the comedy juggernaut was almost an impressive disaster right up until it aired on October 11th, 1975. Saturday Night, directed by Jason Reitman, tells the story of the ninety minutes before the first episode aired and the complete chaos behind the scenes. Led by Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LaBelle), we watch him traverse through a bloated show, an unruly cast, a disinterested crew, and an executive (Willem Dafoe) praying for him to fail. Some of the iconic cast gets to shine here most noticeably Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith), Dan Aykroyd (Dylan O’Brien), Garrett Morris (Lamorne Morris), and an understated John Belushi (Matt Wood). Michaels does at least have a steady support by his side in his wife Rosie Shuster (wonderfully played by Rachel Sennott) even when his producer Dick Ebersol (Cooper Hoffman) is breathing down his neck. The film makes use of the entire studio and brings everything to life. Reitman seems to have taken some notes from Aaron Sorkin and Paul Thomas Anderson with the way he shoots the minutes before air with its constant walk-and-talks and background blunders. Wright, Mike, Marco, and Nathan discuss their love and admiration for the legendary show and if the richness of the source material shines through Saturday Night.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). AZRAEL MOVIE REVIEW

Some time after the Rapture, we find civilization in disarray and no one can speak. Azrael follows the titular character (Samara Weaving) and her partner Kenan (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), as they escape imprisonment from a female-led community of religious zealots. As she’s recaptured, she is due to be sacrificed by an evil entity, but as luck would have it, she makes a narrow escape. Directed by E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills) and written by Simon Barrett (You’re Next, The Guest), Azrael takes the silent approach to a “chase/horror/thriller” with beautifully shot scenery and compelling physical acting. Since we follow Azrael throughout the film and have no dialogue to understand her character more deeply, the film relies heavily on Weaving’s reactions and choices. The film does trust the audience quite a bit when it comes to the mythic horror that follows and it works for the most part. Wright, Mike, and Drew do have a lot to say, though, about Azrael and discuss whether or not they would ever want to speak of it again.
