WHAT HAPPENED TO DOROTHY BELL? MOVIE REVIEW

Found footage horror isn’t always everyone’s favorite, but if it’s playing at Fantastic Fest, it generally is better than most. Such is the case for What Happened to Dorothy Bell? written and directed by Danny Villanueva Jr. The film follows Ozzie (Asya Meadows) who has lost much of the memory of her childhood when her beloved librarian grandmother Dorothy Bell suddenly went haywire and stabbed her multiple times. Seeking out the library where she worked, and with the help of a friendly custodian, she begins her investigation only to realize some family stories are best left alone. With some solid scares What Happened to Dorothy Bell? set the bar as the creepy film to beat this year at Fantastic Fest for Chris and Wright.

BOOKWORM MOVIE REVIEW

You just can’t keep Elijah Wood away from New Zealand. And who can blame him? It’s goddamn gorgeous. He gets to revisit the scenic countryside in his second collaboration with director Ant Timpson, Bookworm. The tale starts with Mildred (Nell Fisher) and her mom who don’t get along well. Mildred lives a life in books and her mom, not so much. When there’s a household accident which puts her mother in a coma, out of nowhere comes her biological father from the States who she’s never met, Strawn (Elijah Wood). He’s an ‘illusionist’ who seems to have missed his shot at the big time and Mildred is not impressed. She guilts him into taking her on a camping trip in pursuit of the rumored Canterbury Panther, for which a local newspaper promises 50,000 dollars for a picture of. These two have little in common, and like with most things, Mildred is just not having it, especially with Strawn’s need to get her approval, if not her affection for him as a father figure. But, you know how trips into the wild for these types go. It will go terribly wrong and by going that wrong, it’ll go right. Chris and Wright review Bookworm at Fantastic Fest 2024!

U ARE THE UNIVERSE MOVIE REVIEW

What would you do if you were an astronaut on a deep space mission and discovered the Earth had blown up? If you were Ukrainian space trucker Andriy, then probably not much different. You’d continue to tolerate terrible dad jokes from your onboard robot trying to cheer you up, listen to records, sleep a lot, the usual. But when he gets a signal from one other survivor of the destruction of humanity, a French scientist named Catherine orbiting a planet far away from him, he starts to realize that he actually does need people and that he’d do anything to keep her ship from crashing into the planet below. TIME BANDITS SERIES REVIEW

Remember as a kid when it was super cool to have a favorite dinosaur? When day-dreaming of sailing the world with vikings like Leif Erikson was a perfectly normal and healthy thing to do? When you could tell the difference between Greek and Roman history without extra scrutiny? Kevin (Kal-El Tuck) will never have those memories. Apple Plus presents a ten episode television series based on the film by Terry Gilliam, Time Bandits. The kids at school, his little sister, and even his own parents all mock Kevin relentlessly for having an encyclopedic knowledge and curiosity regarding the history of our world. One night, Kevin’s wardrobe goes full TARDIS on him and he ends up on the run with a group of bandits that can traverse through time and space through portals they find with a map stolen from “The Supreme Being” (Taika Waititi). The unofficial leader of the bandits Penelope (Lisa Kudrow) decides Kevin might possibly be useful with his vast knowledge of historical events. Perhaps his brain can be put to good use in stealing valuable stuff. The Supreme Being is livid his map is missing and sends a heavenly host to purse the bandits. However it’s not just Heaven on Kevin’s tail. Pure Evil (Jemaine Clement) also wants the power of the map to send the entire universe into an unending age of chaos. Bradly, Neil, and Harmoni discuss the foundation of the series with the classic film that it’s based on, pacing and character motivation in a show about time, and Harmoni and Neil show great patience and compassion as Bradly tries to will Alan Rickman back into our existence.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

THE SUBSTANCE MOVIE REVIEW

We’ve never seen Demi Moore like this before. Coralie Fargeat’s, director of Revenge, second feature film The Substance is a wild combination of David Cronenberg’s body-horror and Frank Henenlotter’s exploitation sensibilities. Demi Moore plays Elizabeth Sparkle, whose stardom has faded from Hollywood icon to hosting a tv workout show ala Jane Fonda. Through a severe accident, she is presented a solution to her problems: The Substance. It is a black-market drug that can replicate your cells and creates a younger, better version of yourself. Once Sparkle decides to use the drug through a series of cryptic directions, the metamorphosis into her younger self is horrific to say the least. As older Elizabeth sleeps for the next 7 days, the younger version of her “Sue” is born, played here by Margaret Qualley. Sue then takes over Sparkle’s life and reclaims her identity, but at a weekly cost. Much like other horror films, there are rules to making a deal with the devil. Sue and Elizabeth need to trade places every week or they face gruesome consequences. The TV studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid), doesn’t make either of their lives any easier by pushing his grotesquely toxic masculinity to darkly humorous effect. Fargeat’s approach is kinetic, disgusting, and often very funny. The Substance is a standout mainly due to Moore and Qualley’s incredible performances; they do not hold anything back. Listen as Wright, Chris, Marco, and Frank discuss if The Substance is the new “no holds barred” horror hit or if its destined to only become a midnight cult classic.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. REBEL RIDGE MOVIE REVIEW

Nothing like a good ol’ fashioned solid action flick. Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room) is back with his newest film, Rebel Ridge, starring Aaron Pierre, AnnaSophia Robb, and Don Johnson. We meet Pierre’s character Terry riding his bike down a long country road where he’s suddenly run off the road by two local cops. They search him, and while Terry is being totally compliant, they steal his $35,000 in cash. There is an odd law in place where these cops are legally in the right to take Terry’s money and leave him with nothing. Terry doesn’t take that laying down and heads to the local courthouse where he meets Robb’s character Summer. He pleads with them to give him time to find more money since he needs it to get his cousin out of jail before he heads to the state prison. Terry’s only option is to take the money back and head to the police station where he meets Johnson’s Chief Sandy. Sandy isn’t having any of Terry’s pleas, but in their brief standoff in front of the station the remaining officer quickly discovers who Terry really is. The ultimate badass! This is how Saulnier plays his hand with the film; steady and then he moves it into being a terrific action/thriller. Listen as Wright, Sarah Jane, and Ryan discuss their admiration for Rebel Ridge and how it’s a great new chapter for Saulnier’s already incredible filmography.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 346: THE MEN FROM DIGITAL NOISE

Chris and Wright have a stack that goes all over the place, from deadly electrified motorcycle beach killers to Costner “classics” getting a not-so-great reevaluation. Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). THE 4:30 MOVIE FILM REVIEW

Kevin Smith is one of the defining Gen X filmmakers. Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy inspired countless storytellers from the 90’s to today. He’s also the guy who made Cop Out and Yoga Hosers. The guy’s had a mixed bag of a career. So, it comes as a wonderful surprise to Mike, Ryan, and T.C. that after over a decade of his “for fans only” movies, Smith appears to have made an actual film again. This semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film tells the story of Brian David, a kid in love with two things: movies and Melody Barnegat. After botching his chance to get to second base last summer, Brian finally works up the nerve to ask her to a movie. He and his two best friends, sex obsessed cool guy Burny, and mom bacon holding dweeby third man Belly, spend all afternoon at the local cineplex in anticipation of the 4:30 date. This is a day in the life of movie obsessed kids in 1986 Jersey and one of Smiths best works.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. SPEAK NO EVIL MOVIE REVIEW

The Danish horror film Speak No Evil was much discussed in horror circles as being one of the bleakest and most frightening films of 2022. Now here comes Blumhouse Films to soften it up for American audiences. And while there is no denying that they did exactly that, is it such a bad thing? Ben (Scoot McNairy) and Louise (Mackenzie Davis) are Americans who have recently moved to London with their pre-teen daughter Agnes. While on vacation in Tuscany, they hit it off with another couple, Paddy (James McAvoy) and Ciara (Aisling Franciosi) who invite them to come spend a week with them at their farmhouse out in the country. At first, everything seems fine-ish. There’s the usual misunderstandings and awkward moments, but nothing to panic about. But soon, things start appearing to be WAY more off than anyone could reasonably be asked to put up with. And Paddy and Ciara are just getting started. Chris, Wright, Kate, and Nathan get into this new horror/thriller, discuss the differences between it and the original, and how sometimes ‘fun’ is just as good as ‘punishing’ in horror and even sometimes, depending on yours tastes, much preferable.

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. In her spare time, you can find her either down at the barn with her noble steed Jazz, watching as many movies as possible (often at work), cuddling with her pair of black cats and writing horror scripts, or nursing a beer in any available body of water… or doing Duolingo, where she’s currently on a 1000+ day streak.

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

MY OLD ASS MOVIE REVIEW

Elliott (Maisy Stella) has grown up in a beautiful lakeside town with her family, who grow cranberries there for a living. While there had been some expectation that she would continue on in the family business at some point, she has since made clear that she has no interest. Soon to leave for college, she organizes on her 18th birthday a gathering of her and her two best friends on a small island in the lake to camp out and take magic mushrooms. While her friends have more of the traditional experience, nothing seems to be happening until all of the sudden, BOOM: there’s Aubrey Plaza. The older woman claims to be Elliott at age 39 and that they can communicate because of the drugs. After a somewhat disappointing but still kinda cool night of stern warnings from older Elliott, especially to ‘stay away from Chad’, older Elliott is gone in the morning. But only sorta, as before she disappears, she puts her phone number in young Elliott’s phone and guess what? Well, you know. And it’s not long before Elliott meets Chad (Percy Hynes White) which would be a total meet-cute because he’s thoroughly likable and hot, except A: she’s been warned and B: up until Chad, Elliott considered herself to be gay. It sounds like there’s a lot more plot going on here than there really is, but what My Old Ass does have is charm a-plenty and a smart, if not especially thorough, script. Chris, Wright, Nathan, and Alan discuss the film and Chris wonders if he should try to visit the 39 year old version of himself with warnings, but realizes he probably wouldn’t have enough time to get through all of them.
