THE ELECTRIC STATE MOVIE REVIEW

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo (Those Avengers Endgame fellas) and their frequent screenwriting collaborators, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (those other two Avengers Endgame fellas) continue their Netflix contract obligations by delivering one of the most expensive movies ever made (none of it going to Chris Pratt’s wigs) with an adaptation of the extraordinary illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag. In an alternate 1990, a war between humans and robots ended with humanity’s victory, thanks to Ready Player On-uh, I mean Neurocaster technology, which allowed humans to upload their minds into drone robots. By 1994, most people live in virtual states, while robots were exiled to an exclusion zone. Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown), a rebellious teenager who refuses to use the Neurocaster tech discovers a sentient robot controlled by her deceased younger brother Christopher. They embark on a journey to locate him somewhere out in the post-robot-war America, with the help of a veteran named Keats (Chris Pratt) and his sidekick robot, Herman (Anthony Mackie). Rae, Melina, and T.C. get online in the One Of Us holodeck to determine whether or not the $500 million price tag was well spent or if the Russos have offered up another The Gray Man.

Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

TRIGGER HAPPY MOVIE REVIEW

In a world where you must buy a gun in order to get health care, where the number one show on television is an infomercial for a sponge and the most watched kids program is about a dino-gun character named Tricera-Glock, one man struggles to escape the inescapable mundanity of suburban life as a pissed off millennial. When his wife’s acting career begins to take off, he realizes that the only way out may be killing her for the insurance money. Melina, Mike, and T.C. gather around the One Of Us backyard barbeque to discuss pie filling, skydiving, and whether this David Lynch meets Tim and Eric inspired indie flick has the skill to pull off the deep satire, or if it’s better off getting out of dodge and going to the Bahamas.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is an award-winning creative jack of all trades, and is pretty competent with most of them. He is a writer, director, animator, video editor, and motion graphics artist. He has tried his hand at nearly every form of artistic expression at least once. He was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania where he fell in love with film, writing and special effects at an early age. His obsession with film would lead him to being locally known as a “human IMDb” and being on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He would study film in Pittsburgh before taking his talents to Austin. Not letting something like Tourettes get in his way, he has produced a handful of animated short films that have won awards from film festivals all over the globe. He has also written several yet-to-be-produced screenplays and TV pilots, with some of them being recognized in screenwriting competitions. He has even created motion graphics and animations for several clients, from movie theaters to Twitch streamers. When not creating or watching films, he enjoys MST3K, classic video games and buying vinyl records. He loves dogs, dropping obscure pop culture trivia and watching travel videos. BLACK BAG MOVIE REVIEW

Who knew after Steven Soderbergh’s retirement back in 2017 that he would ultimately make another fifteen feature films? We all did. Now with his 40th film, Black Bag is a return to sexy form for Soderbergh with an all star cast. Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett play husband & wife spies where Fassbender’s George is given startling intel that his wife may be selling government secrets to the enemy. Written by David Koepp, the story doesn’t focus too heavily on the stakes of the political fallout, but more on Fassbender and Blanchett’s commitment to each other and what they would do to save one another. We’re introduced to a colorful cast of spies that have their own baggage that adds to the tension of the main plot, but doesn’t take away too much of the driving force of the main character’s dire circumstance. With beautiful photography, costuming, and production design, it’s no wonder that Soderbergh would return and refresh his noir-ish roots with Black Bag. Listen as Wright, Beau, Ben, and Nathan gush over this more talkative spy thriller.

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. BORDERLINE MOVIE REVIEW

From the psychotic mind of the man who brought you Cocaine Bear, writer and director Jimmy Warden returns with Borderline. Sofia (Samara Weaving) is the current Hollywood It girl with a walk that can turn heads in traffic and a smile that can light up the stars. Her life is full of wealth, fame, film roles, platinum records, sponsorships, and also unwanted attention from a creepy stalker named Duerson (Ray Nicholson). After an escalated home invasion attempt leaving Sofia’s bodyguard Bell (Eric Dane) hospitalized, Duerson is locked up. Roll credits? Not exactly, Duerson flies the coop accompanied by a duo just as insane as he is: a manic pixie dream psycho named Penny (Alba Baptista) and a bug lug headed goon. Duerson’s genuinely believes that he and Sofia are getting married and his second attempt at capturing Sofia will surely win her heart. It’s up to Sofia, her bodyguard Bell, and an NBA basketball player named Rhodes (Jimmie Fails) to thwart the neurotic fantasies of Duerson. Bradly, Drew, and Lewayne discuss tone, over the top violence on the stage of comedy, and if a mental disorder in such a comedy would be punching up, punching down, or just a punchline. Jimmy Warden once again finds moments to go over the top in disgusting yet sidesplitting ways that regardless of the final results, will stay with a viewer for a very long time.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. Drew Tinnin is a Rondo Award nominated interviewer and critic who has worked at SiriusXM’s Fangoria Radio and Fangoria magazine in NYC, as well as the London-based Dazed Digital. Currently a regular contributor to the Dread Central Network, he’s excited to join up with some old friends and other film fans on One of Us as a new contributor to Screener Squad.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. NOVOCAINE MOVIE REVIEW

Full disclosure: This was our first experience seeing a film in 4DX, which are, as Beau puts it, massage chairs that kick the crap out of you. Some of us loved the experience. Some of us had to gag a few times. But either way, it definitely affected our experience of watching the action-comedy film Novocaine. Your review results may be altered. The film follows Nathan Caine, called Novocaine by bullies when he was growing up because he suffers from a genetic disorder that makes him unable to feel pain. While this sounds like a superpower, in fact it is incredibly dangerous: he could get injured and not know it and bleed out before he knew he needed help. So he lives his life in a bit of a shell, playing video games at home with an online friend (Jacob Batalon) and going to work as an assistant manager at a bank. The only thing that has perked him up is Sherry (Amber Midthunder), a bank teller who he is infatuated with. When she approaches him to go on a date with her and then sparks fly, Nathan is smitten for the first time in his life and you know how big that is. But the next day at work, three robbers come in, kill his boss, take tons of money, and leave with her as a hostage. Dangerous health condition or not, Nathan chases them using every skill he can muster to try to track her down and save the day. But things are not always as they seem and he is going to be glad he can’t feel any pain by the times things really start going. Chris, Beau, Wright, and Kate review the film and while the story is kinda old hat, Quaid’s lovable everyman and some solid/gory action make for a decent amount of fun. Or maybe it was the chairs. Dunno.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). OPUS MOVIE REVIEW

They say, never meet your heroes. Usually it turns out they’re just a bit of a jerk, but in Ariel’s case, it gets a whole lot worse than that. Ayo Edebiri plays Ariel, a young journalist working at a Rolling Stone-esque publication. While she has a seat at the table for decision making, her boss regularly passes her over for chances to take the lead on stories. But then the biggest music news ever breaks: legendary reclusive musical genius Alfred Moretti (John Malkovich) makes an announcement that he is coming out of retirement and putting out a new album for the first time in decades. A small group of media is invited to his estate/ranch to spend a few days and listen to the new tracks and spend time with Moretti. Much to Ariel’s surprise, along with her boss (Murray Bartlett) she receives an invite as well. When the small group arrives, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary estate, it seems more like a cult compound. Everywhere you look, people of all ages work on various types of art, all of them wearing matching blue outfits. As the trip goes on, the true nature of their visit begins to clarify and it is not just to jam out to sweet tunes. Chris, Wright and Ben review this new A24 horror film Opus from debut director Mark Anthony Green and ya know, it kinda feels like we’ve seen this movie before. Only the other times, it was better.

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. THE ACCIDENTAL GETAWAY DRIVER MOVIE REVIEW

When you need a Uber in a hurry, you just wanna be gone in sixty seconds, and hopefully your wheelman will just shut up and drive. Once at your final destination however, don’t forget before you put in that star rating that your driver is a real human being. The Accidental Getaway Driver isn’t about high speed chases or hairpin turns in busy marketplaces, but rather a slice of life in the day of Long Mã (Hiep Tran Nghia) who at the end of a long day is talked into picking up three strangers in Orange county who promise double the fares. What then transpires is Long Mã at gunpoint discovering that these men are escaped prisoners who plan to use the old man and his vehicle to avoid the fuzz until the heat dies down. Tây (Dustin Nguyen), the cool headed take charge leader of this operation, insists that this will all be a bad memory after they successfully get away. Aden (Dali Benssalah), a hot-headed muscle thug, insists that their faces have been seen and this trip only has one destination: three free men and one grave. Eddie (Phi Vu) is the youngest of the three who seems to make every choice out of fear and posturing. All four characters, through necessity and being trapped together, discover each other’s humanity and each other’s reasons for running. Bradly, Drew, and Lewayne put on their roadster gloves, rev up their engines, and burn rubber towards more peaceful destinations as they discuss this vibes and harmony story about the peace of mind we all hope to achieve on the highway called life.

Drew Tinnin is a Rondo Award nominated interviewer and critic who has worked at SiriusXM’s Fangoria Radio and Fangoria magazine in NYC, as well as the London-based Dazed Digital. Currently a regular contributor to the Dread Central Network, he’s excited to join up with some old friends and other film fans on One of Us as a new contributor to Screener Squad.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. John Gholson is a writer and cartoonist with bylines at Movies.com, Moviefone, and Vice and illustration work for GQ and Fandango. As an actor, John can be seen in Zero Charisma, Hidden America With Jonah Ray, and The Suplex Duplex Complex. He writes and performs sketch comedy regularly at The New Movement Theater. MICKEY 17 MOVIE REVIEW

A new science fiction dystopian satire with Robert Pattinson playing dual roles and with Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette as exaggeratedly evil bad guys is alone enough to sell one on being excited for the new film Mickey 17. When you see it’s the latest film by the legendary four-time Oscar recipient director Bong Joon Ho, it’s a ‘can’t miss’. Pattinson plays Mickey, destitute and in trouble with murderous loan sharks. He and his friend Timo (Steven Yeun) in order to escape certain death, sign up for a space mission to colonize a distant planet led by the absurdly terrible failed politician Kenneth Marshall (Ruffalo) and his shallow and manipulative wife Ylfa (Collette). But with zero qualifications, the only way for Mickey to get assigned on board is as an expendable: someone whose whole being is stored in memory, brain storage regularly uploaded, and who dies over and over again…for science! The story skips ahead to the ship landing on the planet and Mickey on his 17th clone. By now, death has become somewhat routine so when he finds himself face-to-face with the planet’s terrifying beasties, he figures that’s it for 17. But much to his surprise, he doesn’t die. Unfortunately that means there’s now two Mickeys, something prohibited with exuberant moral zeal by the populace. Both Mickeys have their own ways of sizing up this situation, and somewhat different personalities. And there’s Mickey’s girlfriend Nasha (Naomi Ackie) who finds the prospect of having two Mickeys…enticing. Mickey 17 is a rollercoaster ride of satire that holds a carnival mirror up to our world and toxic capitalism/politics. It’s distorted but easily recognizable. Chris, Wright, Nathan, and Beau give their thoughts about this absolutely absorbing and brilliant orchestra playing as the ship goes down.

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. THE QUIET ONES MOVIE REVIEW

In August of 2008, the biggest heist in the nation of Denmark’s history went down. Though names have been changed and dramatic liberties taken, The Quiet Ones brings the robbery to life. Our story features a struggling boxer named Kasper (Gustav Giese). He’s got big plans to be the champion of the world and stand tall above all others for his gal and daughter, but a little bit of violent crime on the side has sabotaged his goals in more ways than one. Some old criminal buddies, Slimani (Reda Kateb) and Hasse (Christopher Wagelin), let Kasper in on the scoop that 20% of the nation’s Kroner is on a silver platter begging to be taken from the cash processing facility in the capital of Copenhagen. Director Frederik Louis Hviid takes a realistic approach to filming the night caper in all it’s gruelling, nail-biting details. Bradly, Kate, and Lewayne come together and lay down the differences between the realistic heist film and the fun loving “crime does pay” heist films such as Fast 5, and Oceans 11. The camerawork and eye on the tension is appreciated, but does waiting around in the dark make for an exciting caper or is going realistic not a normal choice for a reason? Kate then presents the facts behind the heist that are truly stranger than fiction. If anything, boost the stats on your foreign films intake and check out The Quiet Ones.
