Maria Movie Review

MARIA MOVIE REVIEW

“An opera begins long before the curtain goes up and ends long after it has come down. It starts in my imagination, it becomes my life, and it stays part of my life long after I’ve left the opera house” – Maria Callas

Angelina Jolie is the titular character Maria in this new Netflix film about Maria Callas, the world’s greatest opera singer as she lives the last days of her life in 1970’s Paris. Her house maid Bruna (Alba Rohrwacher) and Ferruccio (Piefrancesco Favino) do what they can to persuade her to see a doctor and treat what ails her. Maria would rather dramatically prolong what she feels is the inevitable curtain closing with the help of her hallucinations. With vultures circling, demanding her story be given, Maria chooses to gratify only herself, after a life long lived serving a never satiated public. The film recounts all that Maria has given to perfect her craft and climb to the top of the operatic world while maintaining a distance from the typical retelling so often seen in biopics. Bradly and Frank discuss what little they know of Maria, and the abundance of trivia they know of Angelina Jolie in this return to leading roles that they hope will elevate her back to her award season diva status.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Screener Squad: Oh, Canada

Oh, Canada Movie Review

OH, CANADA MOVIE REVIEW

Misery may love company but its infatuation with Paul Schrader could move mountains and ignite the stars. Hot off the conclusion of his loner weirdo trilogy (First Reformed, The Card Counter, and The Constant Gardener), Paul Schrader is moving in a different direction by adapting one of esteemed author Russell Banks final publications, “Foregone” into the film Oh Canada. Leonard Fife (Richard Gere) is a prestigious documentarian suffering terminal illness. He has requested that an old student of his named Malcom (Michael Imperioli) document his final days. Leonard, in his own words, wants to set the record straight, tear down the myths, and in his own words, tell the truth about his time on Earth. He only wants to do so on his terms and directly to his wife Emma (Uma Thurman) who must be present through the entire recounting. As Leonard laments on his regrets, mistakes, triumphs, loves, and losses, Emma and Malcolm can’t help but feel he is getting confused on some of the details. Is the illness mixing things up in his brain? Is it just the common way we all go out grasping at long forgotten memories only held together by powerful feelings that helped shape one’s identity? Or is Leonard just a big fat liar with pants ablaze? As Leonard tells his story, the film itself asks these big questions not just about our dying protagonist, but big questions about all of us and our time here on Earth. Frank and Bradly gush over one of their favorite films of the year told by one of cinemas most polarizing figures.

DanDaDan series Review

DANDADAN SERIES REVIEW

Ken ‘Okarun’ Takakura (Natsuki Hanae) is a socially awkward misfit with an Agent Mulder brain. If the truth is out there, he wants to find and befriend a couple of aliens while learning and adapting their ways. Momo Ayase (Shion Wakayama) is the granddaughter of a powerful medium with passed down psychic power that puts the fear of god into all the creepy crawling bumps in the night. The two think the other’s hobbies and beliefs are complete bunk, but during a heated altercation, these two high school kids bet that the other wouldn’t last in their world. Thus begins the visually stunning and narrative inanity of DanDaDan, a manga adaptation anime streaming on CrunchyRoll and Netflix from legendary animation studio Science Saru (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off! and DevilMan Crybaby) and creator Yukinobu Tatsu. DanDaDan is a breakneck paced slice of life infused with sci fi abduction, occult cosmic horror, haunted houses, and perverted grannies that would wager your family jewels on a midnight footrace. It’ll take more than a new found friendship and budding romance to exorcise these demons. Sometimes a conversation and understanding goes a long way, but kicking an alien invader’s ass with hereditary powers goes even further. Bradly, Kim, and Dogget discuss the weirdest anime to hit pique popularity state-side since the adult swim days of Fooly Cooly, open up about their admiration for high risk storytelling, and then gossip about every 90s kids’ first TV crush, The Pink Ranger.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 349: The LAST 2024 EPISODE IN 2025

With the variable pressures of the holiday season, Chris and John are sorry that they were unable to get this Xmas Digital Noise episode up until 2025. And so it goes. But we do have some great stuff to talk about this week from one of the best action films ever made (that you probably have never seen or heard of), to a trilogy of disaffected 90s indie-kid films. From the most expensive but weakest chapter in a sci-fi series, to two of the most inscrutable but fascinating art films ever made. Digital Noise has got it covered.

All titles were sent to Digital Noise by the distribution companies in question for the purpose of review. No other compensation was involved. The opinions here are our own.

PLEASE USE OUR IMAGE LINKS TO BUY ANY OF THESE TITLES ON AMAZON. IN FACT, PLEASE USE THEM AS YOUR STARTING POINT FOR ANYTHING YOU BUY OFF OF AMAZON. WE ARE AN AFFILIATE AND RECEIVE COMPENSATION FOR PURCHASES MADE FROM OUR LINKS.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). You can also check out Chris in his videocast, along with Martin Thomas and Danni Danger, that One Of Us does with our friends at Bell of Lost Souls: Crossover Event. Screener Squad: Star Trek: Lower Decks – The Final Season

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 Review

STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS – THE FINAL SEASON REVIEW

Every journey begins with a first step and every voyage of a starship ends with a final frontier.  Paramount presents the final season of the Starfleet crew on the California Class USS Cerritos on the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks.  A lot has happened across the universe for a crew over the past 4 seasons.  Actions have created ripples that have affected the lives of entire civilizations.  This season, their choices won’t just determine the future of this universe.  The trendy and never tiresome multiverse is now at stake.  Things aren’t all grim and gloomy however.  The show may be a star trek fan-gasm of easter-eggs, references, trivia, and reverence to a beloved IP but it’s also a comedy.  Ensign Boimler (Jack Quaid) is back at trying to be his best self. Mariner Beckett (Tawny Newsome) is taking baby steps towards being a better team player and leader though leaving behind her reckless inhibitions.  Tendi (Nöel Wells) answers the call of her people, the Orion, to satisfy an oath.  Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) balances his humanity with the efficiency of performing a routine job he finds himself growing bored of without his science buddy Tendi. The Vulcan T’Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz) continues to be in Mariners words, Vulcan AF.  Bradly, Harmoni, and Jordan dread the final curtain drawing closed on one of their favorite shows of the 21st Century.  Jordan and Harmoni banter about their fav trekkie moments reaching across all series and call for a better tomorrow while Bradly remembers that Jerry O’Connell was in Jerry Maguire.

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. For more of this eccentric nerd, you can follow her on Twitter here and read her original writings on Deepest Corners of My Notebook.

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

TRASH IN THE CAN: RICH LITTLE’S ROBIN HOOD

A holiday tradition continues and ends with today’s show. In 2022, we celebrated the season with Rich Little’s “star-studded” retelling of A Christmas Carol and we give it another go with Rich Little’s impression-laden Robin Hood. Is it festive? No. Is it fun? Try again. Did we force the same guest to sit through this next chapter in Rich Little’s unending career? You bet! Baylor Johnson returns with a pretty decent Jimmy Stewart impression as we enjoy Rich Little’s Robin Hood from 1982.

Highly Suspect Reviews: The Brutalist

The Brutalist Movie Review

THE BRUTALIST MOVIE REVIEW

Who knew a nearly 4 hour sweeping historical epic could move at a breakneck pace? Brady Corbet’s newest feature, The Brutalist, achieves that in spades and very well could be one of the best films of the year. Adrien Brody stars as László Tóth, a Hungarian holocaust survivor emigrating to America while trying to acclimate to his new home. Through many trials, Tóth meets wealthy industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce) and his luck begins to change. Buren, so caught up in Tóth’s beautiful redesign of his private library, offers him the chance of a lifetime; build a giant community center dedicated to Buren’s late mother. As Tóth’s wife arrives in America (Felicity Jones), he begins to see the cracks in the foundation of his and Buren’s friendship. Corbet’s beautiful cinematography and script breathe so much life into this character study and there’s a standout performance by Pearce who surely will receive plenty of awards attention. Listen as Wright, Marco, Ben, and Nathan (also known as the Brutalist Bois) gush over this incredible feature and hope the audience gives it the attention it deserves in spite of it’s runtime.

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Carry-On Movie Review

CARRY-ON MOVIE REVIEW

Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton) is living his best life. His beautiful girlfriend Nora (Sofia Carson) has just had a positive pregnancy test and she is slaying problems as a career girl. His best friend Jason (Sinqua Walls) encourages him to reach for that next rung on the corporate ladder. He and Nora are talking vacation plans to celebrate in Tahiti for maybe next Christmas. There’s just one all encompassing issue standing in his way: himself. Ethan is a bare minimum, no ambition, kinda run of the mill, Jersey sad sack. Lucky for him, on this particular Christmas Eve, an unhinged psychopath with some red ribbon flare (Jason Bateman) wants to commit some international terrorism involving a carry-on bag and Ethan the TSA agent looking the other way, or else! Carry-On is directed by ‘movies for dads’ auteur Jaume Collet-Serra and written by T. J. Fixman. It is the Die-Hard too of Netflix holiday cheer full of text tensions, awkward phone calls, and the moral conundrum of rooting for the TSA. Bradly, Nathan, and Jordan bring out the jolly while discussing the journey of Collet-Serra’s early horror film career, his run of TBS films that revitalized the Hollywood action tough guy with a gun stylings of Liam Neeson, and conclude the history lesson with Jaume’s escape from The Rock and a hard place. Marvel at the B-movie film knowledge of Jordan and Nate while Bradly continually mis-names Jason Bateman as if he was some kind of an American Psycho. Happy Holiday screener squad review from oneofus.com to you.

You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Highly Suspect Reviews: Better Man

Better Man Movie Review

BETTER MAN MOVIE REVIEW

Let’s go through our musical biopic checklist, shall we? Talented kid from a broken home dreams of becoming a pop star? Check. Serious daddy issues? Check. Fame and overwork leads to exhaustion, addiction, and self-destructive behavior? Check, check, and check. Protagonist is depicted as a CGI singing, dancing monkey voiced by the musical celebrity himself? Also check. Wait, what?! Based on the life and career of UK pop star Robbie Williams, Better Man rarely deviates from the standard musical biopic template; however, that last creative decision breaks with the formula entirely. This admittedly novel approach allows Williams to play himself from the age of 15 to 50, but can this obvious gimmick compensate for a screenplay that feels like it came from a kit and was assembled by a committee of studio executives? In a word – “Yes”. Oneofus.net spared no expense in digitally replacing our reviewers with CGI animal doubles. Unfortunately, this is an audio-only podcast, so you’ll have to trust us when we tell you the VFX are surprisingly good – kind of like this movie. See what Frank (“OMG I LOVE ROBBIE WILLIAMS!!!”), Ben (“I like a few of his songs”), and Marco (“Robbie who?”) thought of this uncanny mix of the fresh and the familiar.

By day, Marco is a mild-mannered office worker, but by night he is a mild-mannered movie watcher. He does other mild-mannered stuff too.

“You don’t need to follow me. You don’t need to follow anybody!”

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. He’s best found on Instagram or Twitter as @MovieReelBen.

Highly Suspect Reviews: Nosferatu

Nosferatu Movie Review

NOSFERATU MOVIE REVIEW

Nothing says “Merry Christmas” quite like a prestige horror film. Robert Eggers is back and has delivered his 4th feature film with his version of the classic, Nosferatu . Bill Skarsgård stars as the titular vampire whose shadow looms over the picture like a cold blanket while Lily-Rose Depp stars as Ellen Hutter who’s haunted by the beast. As her doting husband Thomas (Nicholas Hoult) has been tasked to finalize a lease for Count Orlok, Ellen becomes deeply concerned for his well being. Thomas’s journey takes a turn for the worse when he discovers that Orlok is none other than Nosferatu himself! If you’re halfway familiar with the Dracula story then you’re already 5 steps ahead. Eggers does bring his own take on the story where he gets to wallow in the gothic horror and psycho-sexual nature of it all. The standouts though are Skarsgård and Depp. Skarsgård’s performance as Orlok is so incredibly intense and oddly sensual that it isn’t difficult to see how anyone caught in his path is mesmerized by him. Yet Depp’s emotional and very physical performance outshines everyone in the cast even with Willem Dafoe’s eccentric Professor Franz. Listen as Wright, Nathan, Ben, and Spider-Mike succumb to darkness and discuss the not-so-friendly Christmas movie, Nosferatu!

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

” width=Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. He lives in Austin with his beloved Dachshund-Maltese and trusted sidekick, Dean. He can also be heard on RageSelect. He can be found on Twitter and Instagram.
