DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 353: FASTER DIGITAL NOISE, REVIEW! REVIEW!

John and Chris have a mighty stack of home releases to review this week (again). From expressing adoration for the best soft-core filmmaker ever, to outright love for one of the best and darkest films of the 90s. From Lovecraftian slow-burn horror, to DePalma (but not Cage) needing to take a minute to breathe. We got a lot to talk about.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). John Gholson (Digital Noise)

John Gholson is a writer and cartoonist with bylines at Movies.com, Moviefone, and Vice and illustration work for GQ and Fandango. As an actor, John can be seen in Zero Charisma, Hidden America With Jonah Ray, and The Suplex Duplex Complex. He writes and performs sketch comedy regularly at The New Movement Theater. John currently lives in Austin with his beloved comic book collection and a cat named after Peter Cushing.

MICKEY 17 MOVIE REVIEW

A new science fiction dystopian satire with Robert Pattinson playing dual roles and with Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette as exaggeratedly evil bad guys is alone enough to sell one on being excited for the new film Mickey 17. When you see it’s the latest film by the legendary four-time Oscar recipient director Bong Joon Ho, it’s a ‘can’t miss’. Pattinson plays Mickey, destitute and in trouble with murderous loan sharks. He and his friend Timo (Steven Yeun) in order to escape certain death, sign up for a space mission to colonize a distant planet led by the absurdly terrible failed politician Kenneth Marshall (Ruffalo) and his shallow and manipulative wife Ylfa (Collette). But with zero qualifications, the only way for Mickey to get assigned on board is as an expendable: someone whose whole being is stored in memory, brain storage regularly uploaded, and who dies over and over again…for science! The story skips ahead to the ship landing on the planet and Mickey on his 17th clone. By now, death has become somewhat routine so when he finds himself face-to-face with the planet’s terrifying beasties, he figures that’s it for 17. But much to his surprise, he doesn’t die. Unfortunately that means there’s now two Mickeys, something prohibited with exuberant moral zeal by the populace. Both Mickeys have their own ways of sizing up this situation, and somewhat different personalities. And there’s Mickey’s girlfriend Nasha (Naomi Ackie) who finds the prospect of having two Mickeys…enticing. Mickey 17 is a rollercoaster ride of satire that holds a carnival mirror up to our world and toxic capitalism/politics. It’s distorted but easily recognizable. Chris, Wright, Nathan, and Beau give their thoughts about this absolutely absorbing and brilliant orchestra playing as the ship goes down.

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Beau Paul (Highly Suspect Reviews, The Original Gentlemen, Screener Squad)

Beau Paul is an Austin native, an actor, and a writer. Sometimes all at once! Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

THE QUIET ONES MOVIE REVIEW

In August of 2008, the biggest heist in the nation of Denmark’s history went down. Though names have been changed and dramatic liberties taken, The Quiet Ones brings the robbery to life. Our story features a struggling boxer named Kasper (Gustav Giese). He’s got big plans to be the champion of the world and stand tall above all others for his gal and daughter, but a little bit of violent crime on the side has sabotaged his goals in more ways than one. Some old criminal buddies, Slimani (Reda Kateb) and Hasse (Christopher Wagelin), let Kasper in on the scoop that 20% of the nation’s Kroner is on a silver platter begging to be taken from the cash processing facility in the capital of Copenhagen. Director Frederik Louis Hviid takes a realistic approach to filming the night caper in all it’s gruelling, nail-biting details. Bradly, Kate, and Lewayne come together and lay down the differences between the realistic heist film and the fun loving “crime does pay” heist films such as Fast 5, and Oceans 11. The camerawork and eye on the tension is appreciated, but does waiting around in the dark make for an exciting caper or is going realistic not a normal choice for a reason? Kate then presents the facts behind the heist that are truly stranger than fiction. If anything, boost the stats on your foreign films intake and check out The Quiet Ones.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. Kate Chambers (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. In her spare time, you can find her either down at the barn with her noble steed Jazz, watching as many movies as possible (often at work), cuddling with her pair of black cats and writing horror scripts, or nursing a beer in any available body of water… or doing Duolingo, where she’s currently on a 1000+ day streak.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

THE GORGE MOVIE REVIEW

Are you a legendary shot behind the scope of a high powered rifle and got next to nothing else going on except sleepless lonely nights sitting next to your phone hoping for that next mission call? Then you are perfect for a top secret year-long mission out in the middle of an undisclosed location that not even Google Maps can find. The Gorge directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Zach Dean premiered on Apple TV+. Levi (Miles Teller) is a USMC elite sniper with his shelf piled high with accolades but no photos of friends or family. Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy) is a mythical assassin who closes the curtains on the lives of those who dance on the stage of corruption and greed. She also loves to dance to her vinyl collection. Just how far is the east from the west? Levi and Drasi, both on opposite ends of the gorge, will find hell within the depths but perhaps find hope within each other. Bradly, Drew, and T.C. take aim at the now streaming phenomenon and discuss which elements of this horror action thriller are on target and which shots miss their mark. T.C. De Witt (Screener Squad)

CLEANER MOVIE REVIEW

When Die Hard needs to Die Hard but in a new Die Hard that is a lot like Die Hard but not the exact same Die Hard, you would hope that Martin Campbell, director of Casino Royale, GoldenEye, and The Mask of Zorro, would be the right guy to Die Hard. Mike, Ryan, and T.C. gather at the top of the One Of Us Plaza to discuss whether or not that hope is fulfilled in the new action thriller Cleaner. When activists take over an energy company’s annual gala held in a skyscraper in London, some more radical members of their group take hostages and threaten to blow up the building if police intervene. Joey Locke (Daisy Ridley), a dishonorably discharged but highly trained ex-soldier, works as the building’s window cleaner, and when Hans and the gang shoot Ellis and get this party started, Joey attempts to save the hostages when she learns one of them is her brother.

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). LAST BREATH MOVIE REVIEW

In 2012, a diving accident during repairs of oil lines in the North Sea led to a daring rescue of a trapped diver without heat, light, or air. In 2019 director Alex Parkinson released a documentary about the incident. In 2022, he got Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, and Finn Cole to say yes to starring in a dramatized version of that documentary. In 2025, Chris, Alan, Ben, and Wright watched it. This is that review. True story? Not sure how much of this version is dead-on accurate, what with none of us having seen the doc version, but a lot of it FEELS exaggerated. At least it did for the actors up on the boat, presumably so they had something to do. And sure, it is an amazing story of bravery and survival. We just wish it had been made into a better movie.

Alan Galinsky (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born and raised in Texas, Alan Galinsky is a lifetime movie fan. As a youth, he would rent multiple movies every weekend and go to the theater for the latest releases, and that pace has remained steady. When Alan isn’t watching movies, you can find him talking about movies. When he’s not talking about movies, you can find him playing music in the band Delicate Boys.

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can)

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE MOVIE REVIEW

PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder according to the online dictionary is a condition of persistent mental and emotional stress occurring as a result of injury or severe psychological shock, typically involving disturbance of sleep and constant vivid recall of the experience, with dulled responses to others and to the outside world. Writer/director, and US Army veteran paratrooper Kyle Hausmann-Stokes presents his short film Merit x Zoe adapted to the full length feature My Dead Friend Zoe. Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green) has been court ordered to attend a veterans group counseling overseen by Dr. Cole (Morgan Freeman). Reluctant to share her past trauma, Dr. Cole reminds her that without participating in the program, she is not only preventing herself the opportunity to share and heal but is sabotaging the leniency and grace the court has offered her for whatever happened during her military service. After isolating herself from others for so long, her only constant companion is her dead friend Zoe (Natalie Morales). Zoe is brash, abrasive, and discouraging, although in Merit’s memory, the most loyal and unconditionally loving friend she has ever had. Merit struggles to come to terms with the ghosts of the past, and with having to be a caretaker for her grandfather Dale (Ed Harris), a Vietnam veteran with dementia who can no longer take care of himself. Bradly, Jordan, and Lewayne discuss the importance of films that ask: in a country that is always ready to thank you for your service, what services can we provide to help those who’ve given everything for that country?

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

THE BUILDOUT MOVIE REVIEW

Frank Zappa once said the only difference between a cult and a religion is the amount of real estate they own. Out in the middle of the desert, far from prying eyes and cell phone signals is a woman who refers to herself as Cleric Kanner (Natasha Halevi). Through a mysteriously eccentric and purposefully vague monologue she introduces the debut feature film of writer, director, and producer Zeshaan Younus. What is it that Cleric Kanner and fellow acolyte Cleric Barrow are doing and what important work will be built out of it? The Buildout is the story of two women taking a pilgrimage out into the desert to meet the clerics. Cameron (Jenna Kanell) has no intention of staying with what she calls the cult. She mainly wants to make sure her long time friend Dylan (Hannah Alline) is going to be okay, who has found peace and a purpose driven life from the ideals of the cleric’s creed. As they travel and record messages for the audience and to each other, we discover seeds of pain that have grown and bore fruits of trauma. Such a grief may possibly be found, confronted and put to rest at the center of a hole in the desert where superstitious occurrences are haunting all who take the journey. Or it’s possible that everyone is just starving and dehydrated. Bradly, Kate, and Lewayne say no to drugs and yes to films shot on location and try to suss out the meaning of life, the mysteries of death, and the point of this feature film debut.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. SEPTEMBER 5 MOVIE REVIEW

On September 5, 1972 in Munich Germany, the televised world-wide Summer Olympics was ground zero for a terrorist attack known as the Munich Massacre. Writer/Director Tim Fehlbaum with co-writers Moritz Bender and Alex David blend together real news footage with an sizable ensemble cast. The film tackles the ABC sports news teams’ response, from spectating sporting events to covering the hostage negotiations of the Israeli Olympic team. What are the responsibilities of a journalist when breaking news involves immediate danger? The ethical and moral dilemmas of covering violence carried out by militants in a foreign country with its own laws? The duty to report the news weighed against a producer asking their staff if they are willing to put themself in danger to assist in breaking the story? Bradly, Drew, and Nate discuss films covering a history of life changing events from Spotlight to Morning Glory, compare the workman-like occupation hazards of September 5 to another film that has covered the Munich tragedy, and wonder what Bradly Whitford is up to these days. All of this, of course, while trying to keep things light but educational and shine a spotlight of their own on the importance of films that ask us to remember history with honour and respect.

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Drew Tinnin (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Deliberations of Doom)

Drew Tinnin is a Rondo Award nominated interviewer and critic who has worked at SiriusXM’s Fangoria Radio and Fangoria magazine in NYC, as well as the London-based Dazed Digital. Currently a regular contributor to the Dread Central Network, he’s excited to join up with some old friends and other film fans on One of Us as a new contributor to Screener Squad.
