 We Are Error Reviews: Virginia

A first person mystery adventure game developed by Variable State and published by 505 Games, Virginia follows graduate FBI special agent Anne Tarver as she investigates her first case; the disappearance of a missing boy in rural Virginia. The premise sounds simple enough, right? Well, the game’s description doesn’t care to mention the random appearance of a friendly buffalo or the inevitable confrontation with aliens. Yes, Jon and Chris have more than a few questions about this odd little title and if it succeeds when it comes to its storytelling.

Empty Space

We Are Error Reviews: Battlefield 1

It was the war to end all wars and it didn’t end a goddamn thing. World War I is hardly showcased in pop culture or entertainment, and it’s brutal conflicts are not nearly as romanticized as World War II’s. It’s because of these various factors that’s DICE’s decision to set a Battlefield game during the Great War caught many gamers by surprise. Featuring bolt-action rifles, trench clubs, sword-wielding horsemen and heavily armed zeppelins, Battlefield 1 quickly became one of the most anticipated titles of 2016.

With a relatively unexplored historical setting in video games and an impressive visual aesthetic, does Battlefield 1 manage to stand a part from the glut of first-person military shooters? Have a listen and find out what Chris, Jon and Justin thought about the game!

Ep. 18 – Wii Would Like to Play

This week’s episode is all about the Nintendo Wii, and features Christopher Herman and Jon Romo saying some less than kind words about the console, its lackluster library of games, and the proliferation of motion control gaming.

Though the week’s biggest news stories are always fun to talk about, this particular episode is dedicated to the 10th anniversary of Sony’s third home video game console, the PlayStation 3. Along with discussing the console’s launch, library of games, online programs, controversies and various iterations, the two ponder the PS3’s legacy and debate it’s ranking in the pantheon of PlayStation consoles. Much saltiness and giant enemy crabs ensue. Enjoy!

Though suffering from a long and troubled development cycle for over a decade, DOOM is considered by many to be one of the best games of 2016. Though they cover a number of interesting news stories, the duo spend most of their time discussing the adventures of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. From the franchise’s earliest days in the late 1990s to the supposed leaked reveal of the third game in the rebooted series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Chris and Jon talk about their various experiences with the 20-year-old franchise.

The original Gears of War first debuted on the Xbox 360 in 2006, and the series has gone on to be one of Microsoft’s most popular and commercially successful franchises. Created by Epic Games, the series revolutionized third-person gameplay and has influenced many third-person shooters for the last decade.

Now under the management of video game developer The Coalition, the fifth entry in the series, Gears of War 4, has finally been released. The duo also have a fairly lengthy discussion about their favorite and most disappointing video game finales.

Empty Space

We Are Error Reviews: Mega Man Legacy Collection

Making its debut on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1987, Mega Man is arguably one of the most renowned and recognizable franchises in the video game medium. Well known for it’s challenging gameplay, level design, music, and artwork, Capcom’s 2D side scrolling series has been emulated by countless developers for decades. Though popular and well regarded, Mega Man has fallen by the wayside due to Capcom’s mishandling of the property. In a possible attempt to rectify this negligence and prepare for a possible resurgence for the series, Capcom has released the Mega Man Legacy Collection.

Featuring faithful reproductions of the series’ origins with the original six Mega Man games and various challenge modes, Mega Man Legacy Collection is billed as a celebration of the 8-bit history of Capcom’s iconic robotic mascot. Keeping that in mind, We Are Error’s Christopher Herman and Jon Romo take a “rock” hard look at the collection to see if the adventures of the Blue Bomber have managed to endure 30 years later.

Empty Space

However, the two spend most of their time talking about the Gears of War franchise, and how the series has impacted the video game industry for the last decade. They even take a few minutes to share their early thoughts on Gears of War 4.

Empty Space

Though the two spend a fair amount of time talking about Beyond Good & Evil 2, the Gears of War movie adaptation, and Bethesda’s confirmation of mods coming to the PS4 versions of Fallout 4 and Skyrim: Special Edition, Jon soon takes Chris by the hand (tenderly) and introduces him to the work of video game composer David Wise (Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox Adventures).

Recently remastered (again) for the PS4 and Xbox One, We Are Error’s Chris Herman and Jon Romo have taken it upon themselves to play Capcom’s re-re-release of Resident Evil 4 to see if the beloved title holds up a decade later. Listen, would you kindly?
