DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 306: BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

Chris and Aaron had no end of unexpected delays on both their parts finding the time to get together to record this week’s DN episode. But we cover some great, and not so great, stuff. From one of the Shaw Brothers weirdest action films, to a film about the cult behind a film seeking its mysterious creator. We look at one of the best movies ever made in 4k, to a franchise entry desperately trying to recreate the magic one more (last?) time. Check it out.

All titles were sent to Digital Noise by the distribution companies in question for the purpose of review. No other compensation was involved. The opinions here are our own.

Photo on 2011-10-02 at 13.02Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). You can also check out Chris in his videocast, along with Martin Thomas and Danni Danger, that One Of Us does with our friends at Bell of Lost Souls: Crossover Event. He also regularly guests on the video game website Rage Select. Follow Chris on Twitter and Facebook and check out his Amazon Wish List.

Aaron Woodul (Digital Noise, Screener Squad)

It all began when Aaron was a wee little lass going to his father’s work late in the evening because an all-nighter had to be pulled. Unable to help his father, he and his mother were relegated to a conference room where there was a tv on a dolly and a VCR. He watched Cannon Film’s “Masters of the Universe” and his mind was forever altered by what we will call its greatness. From there he got insanely into the never-ending catalog of Godzilla movies, and affiliated giant monster movies, and old samurai films like “Seven Samurai.” Like any good addiction, it spiraled, and he got heavy into science fiction books, all kinds of comics, and video games. After a brief stint acquiring a degree in media production, which he did nothing with, he found his way into an office job, a happy marriage, and even fatherhood. Now he watches film and plays games when he can, reads the fuck out of comics on his phone, and has surprisingly lengthy discussions with his wife about when to introduce his son to his favorite movies and shows.

Screener Squad: The Umbrella Academy Season 3

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Review

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY SEASON 3 REVIEW

The Hargreeves family is finally back from their jaunt through 1960s Dallas and into the present day. Or so they think. The third season of Netflix’s adaptation of the Dark Horse comic from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá picks up from where we last left our dysfunctional family as they came back to an altered timeline in 2019 where they are no longer the titular Umbrella Academy, but their father Sir Reginald Hargreeves has a new team of super-powered children named the Sparrow Academy. Oh, and there’s an apocalyptic event that threatens to kill everyone, and everything. Again. Mindy, Jena, Jordan, and Marcos all come together to discuss how this new season stacks up with the previous two, what did and didn’t work, more time travel shenanigans, Elliot Page’s transition on and off-screen, and just what exactly is a Kugelblitz?

” width=Mindy Rast-Keenan (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

Jena Perry. Aka Luna. Aka Dion. Aka Memori. Aka Dog whisperer. Aka whiskey connoisseur. As you can see, depending on when you met this Oakland, California native, you have experienced a completely different person, each time. After finally deciding on a 13+year career choice as a Videographer and Radio Personality, Jena balances her time between pursuing her Doctorate in Philosophy, providing insightful and funny critiques on films and Television, raising her daughter and dog in Ohio, and constantly fighting off the existential dread that is being a dope black woman in America in the 20th century.

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. For more of this eccentric nerd, you can follow her on Twitter here and read her original writings on Deepest Corners of My Notebook.

Marcos Lira (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Me? I come from the South, Out there, beyond the horizon by the big river. Out there where the bandits formed cities, and the gambling is legal. I got into movies like most nerds by watching Tarantino but fell in love with movies through Chinese Cinema for some reason. A few of my favorite things would probably be live music, new experiences, and belt-fed ammunition. You can catch this occasional podcaster, occasional other Marco and full-time human on any form of social media by typing jlmarcos62. Hit me up for music suggestions and bad jokes.

Screener Squad: The Princess

THE PRINCESS MOVIE REVIEW

It’s a tale as old as time. You’ve got your kingdom far, far away. You’ve got your once upon a time. You’ve got a strong-willed princess locked away in the tallest tower of the castle. She’s been placed there against her will after refusing to wed a cruel, sociopathic Prince. She wakes in the remote tower of her father’s castle to discover her vindictive suitor has raided the realm and is now intent on taking her father’s throne. The princess must save the kingdom. We’ve been here many times before. But, what this princess has that those other princesses did not is the ability to wield a sword like some sort of fairy tale John Wick. Joey King (from Netflix’s The Kissing Booth) plays the titular Princess and brandishes swords, while jump-kicking, throat punching, and slicing limbs on her way from the top of the tower to the bottom in a reverse The Raid, but in a castle, with a cute, unsuspectingly capable heroine, all in the bloody quest to save her family from the mustache twirling, Prince Julius (Dominic Cooper). Along the way, she has to fight through countless men and Julius’ lieutenant, the whip-wielding Moira (Olga Kurylenko). Rae, Lewayne and T.C. have fun raiding the castle themselves and find as much as they can to say about this 90 minute fight scene with a razor thin plot.

He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Lyrae Anderson (Screener Squad)

You can call me Rae. You can also call me a film lover. I’ll watch it all — small screen; big screen, and everything in between. I have attended and worked for Fantastic Fest and South by Southwest for many years. I married a film geek as well. While we don’t agree on everything, we agree on our love of movies.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

She also occasionally dabbles in comedy, screenwriting, as well as graphic and interior design. Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. You can follow him on Twitter but you’ll probably regret it.

Thor: Love and Thunder Movie Review

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER MOVIE REVIEW

You’re Thor? I’m so thor from laughing I can barely breathe. That was pretty much Chris, Danni, and Wright’s reaction to Taika Waititi’s follow-up to his wonderful (sorry haters) Thor: Ragnarok. Now with Asgard on Earth being run by Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) as a tourist attraction and Thor taking on jobs with the Guardians of the Galaxy, everything seems chill. But wait…there’s this guy Gorr (Christian Bale) who has got ahold of a powerful God-killing weapon and is putting it to work across the universe. Thor has to leave his merry band of space mercenaries and go look into it. Meanwhile on Earth, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) has stage 4 cancer with no hope seemingly in sight until she feels a call from Asgard summoning her to the broken hammer Mjolnir… While this latest entry might fall too hard on the goofy side for some, it was pure pleasure for our reviewers. Listen to them gush about it here.

Screener Squad: The First Lady

The First Lady Series Review

THE FIRST LADY SERIES REVIEW

As the old saying goes: behind every successful man is a great woman telling him to move the hell over…I may be paraphrasing slightly. Showtime’s newest limited series weaves together the stories of three iconic women: Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis), all of whom would hold the distinguished title of the First Lady over the course of their lives. Throughout The First Lady’s 10 episode run, Roosevelt, Ford and Obama struggle to navigate the obligations of their position while staying true to their personal and political convictions. The show explores their storied careers in the political arena as well as their young adult lives, the evolution of their marriages, and the many events that would forever shape their passionate worldviews. Boasting a massive supporting cast including Kiefer Sutherland, O-T Fagbenle, Aaron Eckhart, Lily Rabe, Dakota Fanning, Ellen Burstyn and Jackie Earle Haley, The First Lady seeks to tell the stories of these historical women with as thorough a brush as possible. But despite the massive talent involved (onscreen and off), does this series ultimately succeed as an effective biopic? Well, that’s what delegates Frank, Sarah Jane, Melina and Brad came together to discuss. Check out the full audio review to see whether The First Lady gets a “yay” or “nay.”

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Sarah Jane (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Sarah Jane was born and raised in Southern California but currently calls Austin, TX her home. She’s seen over 5,700 movies so far with zero plans on stopping. She has a penchant for all things exploitation, and she loves Godzilla with all her heart. Her favorite films are Deep Red, Le Samourai, and Miller’s Crossing. When she isn’t watching movies, she’s busy herding her four cats, her husband, and her 11-year-old kiddo. She’s been a contributor to TalkFilmSociety, Daily Grindhouse, FThisMovie!, Looper, and the Austin Chronicle. You can find her on Twitter and Letterboxd at @fookthis.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Screener Squad: The Long Night

The Long Night Movie Review

THE LONG NIGHT MOVIE REVIEW

A lot of things can ruin a romantic couple’s getaway weekend: Anxiety from the deep seclusion, personal injury through your own awkward clumsiness, or having the same old fight with your guy or gal. The worst though would have to be a cult gathering in the front lawn in the middle of the night chanting a prophecy of impending doom all garbed in robes and antlered masks. Director Rich Ragsdale and everyone’s favourite horror streaming service Shudder presents The Long Night. Grace s (Scout Taylor-Compton) a foster kid who never knew her biological mom and dad  has just been contacted by a mysterious stranger who promises information about her real parents. He promises all the answers she seeks and will spill all the beans at his home in the deep dark woods. Jack (Nolan Gerard Funk) sees it as an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone with a possible family reunion and an absolutely sexy time getaway with this bae. The vacation takes a bizarre turn when Wayne (Jeff Fahey) shows up at the promising location demanding to know what this couple is doing trespassing on private property.  Tensions climb even higher when hooded figures surround and invade the premises.  Grace, Jack, and Wayne set aside their confusion and paranoia in order to Survive The Long Night.  Bradly, Lewayne, Rae, and Jordan hunker down and discuss the best way to survive a home invasion, the baggage of tropes that squat on the genre, and the overall greatness of Jeff Fahey.

Screener Squad: Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes

Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes Movie Review

DAWN BREAKS BEHIND THE EYES MOVIE REVIEW

We’ve all been there. Your rich family bequeaths an old, German, castle for you and your husband to enjoy. But, oopsie poopsies, turns out this old mound of bricks is haunted… or is it? Today we’re reviewing Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes, directed by Kevin Kopacka, and starring Anna Platen, Jeff Wilbusch, and Frederik von Lüttichau. The best way to describe this movie without giving away the reveal is that it is two sides of the same coin. A lot of parallels to shift back and forth from. Themes of gender inequality and forgiveness also run through the veins of this film, which by the way is 73 minutes long. What does it all mean? Stick around to hear Lewayne, Ryan, and Chad try to convince Jena not to burn the whole castle down!

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

” width=Jena Perry (Screener Squad)

Jena Perry. Aka Luna. Aka Dion.
