THE SUMMONED MOVIE REVIEW

Hello there OOU members, and welcome to couples therapy. It doesn’t matter if you have any conflicts or issues you need to work through, really you’re here for “self discovery.” What you’ll discover is that this movie is basically similarly conceptual of every horror movie from the past 5 years, rolled into 90 minutes of confusion and rule changes. The story follows Elijah who attends a self-help seminar with his rock star girlfriend only to find out that the Dr. Frost who called them to come to the seminar has a centuries old supernatural debt that he’s looking to settle. The Summoned is written by Yuri Baranovsky and directed by Mark Meir, surrounded by performances that can be best described as “we are acting in a horror movie.” Join Lewayne, Marco, and Tessa, as they listen to Chad bitch and whine on how this is “the best horror film since The Shining.

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Previously guested on podcasts Blood Over Texas, Threequel Club, Trash in the Can, Retro Movie Roundtable, and Nerds with Mics.

GONE IN THE NIGHT

Gone in the Night is the tale of Kath (Winona Ryder) and her younger, less mature boyfriend Max (John Gallagher, Jr.). To salvage their strained relationship, the couple decides to spend a weekend in a remote cabin in the woods. If movies have taught us anything, it’s that nothing good ever happens in a cabin in the woods. To their surprise, there’s already another couple staying at the cabin. Despite the double booking mishap, millennials Al and Greta (Owen Teague and Brianne Tju) agree to let Kath and Max spend the night. The next morning, Kath discovers that Greta dumped Al and ran off with Max in the middle of the night. Kath is heartbroken at being left for a younger woman, but she tries to move on. Nevertheless, she becomes obsessed with finding the woman who stole her boyfriend. She reaches out to Nicholas (Dermot Mulroney), the owner of the cabin. At first, Nicholas is reluctant to get involved, but Kath wins him over, and Airbnb privacy policy be damned, he agrees to help her stake out Greta’s last known address. Little does Kath know that her search for her missing ex-boyfriend’s homewrecking side piece will lead her to a larger, more terrifying truth. Or at least that’s what the filmmakers would like you to believe. Our reviewers were less than convinced. SHE WILL MOVIE REVIEW

Charlotte Colbert (Co-Writer and Director) says that her film, She Will, explores how trauma can blur reality and time, but also how nature holds so much solace. She Will is a story about Veronica, an aging actress who is headed to a secluded retreat, post surgery, to find some healing. Accompanying her is Desi, a live-in nurse who’s there to help out Veronica. Although cold and distant from any humanity (at first), she starts to have visions of her past, and the surrounding nature helps to heal those scars. Jordan, Lewayne, Ben, and Chad discuss female empowerment while Chad’s literal power went out mid review.

WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING MOVIE REVIEW

Based on Delia Owens’ bestselling novel of the same name, Where The Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya, an abandoned child living alone in the marshes of North Carolina during the 1960s. Despite being poor, uneducated, and ostracized by the community, Kya (Daisy Edgar Jones) grows up to be a resourceful young woman and a self taught naturalist and illustrator. When Kya’s ex-boyfriend Chase (Harris Dickinson) is found dead on the beach, the locals immediately suspect “The Marsh Girl” of murder. BEAUTY MOVIE REVIEW

One of the most important and exciting directors in the indie film world, Andrew Dosunmu, teams up with screenwriter Lena Waithe for Beauty, the story of a promising young songstress on the brink of fame and success that’s totally not based on any famous singer whatsoever. I mean sure, throughout the course of the film, the main character is seen getting her start in gospel singing, has an especially close relationship with her female best friend and eventually falls for an R&B bad boy. But I repeat, this is not based on any famous singer you know! The inspiration for the film doesn’t really matter though since Frank, Rose, Jena and Sarah Jane found a few other things that they couldn’t help but call out (like the fact that this is a movie about music where NO ONE is singing) in this completely “original” film.

THE FORGIVEN MOVIE REVIEW

A wealthy collection of bored elites gather out in the Moroccan desert for a party thrown by a snarky couple (Matt Smith and Caleb Landry Jones) but there’s a problem. One couple (Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain) while on their way to the location accidentally hit a local boy on the road and kill him. Taking the body with them back to the party, which is generally not a good way to liven things up, leads to the father of the boy coming there and requesting that Fiennes comes back with him to his home, as this is ‘the way things are done here’. Fiennes agrees and leaves with him and another man (Saïd Taghmaoui) on a very long desert journey with an uncertain moral destination. Meanwhile the party keeps going, for whatever that’s worth. And generally speaking, Chris, Frank, Alan, and Marco didn’t think it was worth much: the party half of the movie, anyway. But still, any movie by John Michael McDonagh (The Guard, Calvary) is well worth a look and although our reviewers didn’t all agree on The Forgiven, it certainly led to a spirited discussion about it.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
