Highly Suspect Reviews: Bullet Train

Bullet Train Movie Review

BULLET TRAIN MOVIE REVIEW

The co-director of John Wick and director of Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde (David Leitch) helms this new action comedy based on a Japanese novel, Maria Beetle. Now, most action comedies don’t seem like there’s enough plot going on to have been based on a novel, but Bullet Train has so many plates spinning, so many subplots, so many characters (many of which we can’t tell you about because it would ruin the surprise) that it’s not that surprising. Brad Pitt plays a trained killer codenamed Ladybug who after years of being in the business and having trouble processing his own negative emotions, is finally starting to have some zen about what he does. Given an ‘easy’ assignment by his handler, he just has to get on the Japanese bullet train, grab a silver briefcase, and get off again. Unfortunately, the train is just lousy with trained killers not all of which are there for reasons directly related to the briefcase in question, or at least, so it seems. Ladybug just can’t get off this damn train and he has to deal with Tangerine and Lemon (Aaron Taylor Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry), The Prince (Joey King), and a lot of other assassins and complications. Chris, Alan, Sarah, and Drew didn’t all agree on this one but it made for a spirited discussion…with no spoilers.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. The Grey Man Movie Review

THE GREY MAN MOVIE REVIEW

When the Russo Brothers, the directors of the second and fifth highest grossing movies of all-time, come to you with a new movie they’d like to make, you say, “Yes.” You give them $200 million, and you let them do whatever they want. And sure, it’s not another superhero IP. In fact, it’s not any recognizable IP at all. It’s an adaptation of Mark Greaney’s 2009 debut action spy thriller, The Grey Man. And even better? It’s the first of 12 books. This might very well be the launch point for a brand new franchise ready to throw some ol’ fisticuffs at James Bond, Jason Bourne, and Ethan Hunt. It’s fight scenes, explosions, car chases, bullets flying and body count rising! Ryan Gosling plays Six, a former convict serving life for murder who is recruited by Agent Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton)  and molded into a highly-skilled assassin for a the deep-cover Sierra program of the CIA. He is the agency’s best merchant of death. However, a mission goes badly and now Six is on the run from the CIA and their clean-up man, sociopathic former agent Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans). Aided by agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas), Six must use all his skills and luck to survive. T.C. and Rae accept the mission of reviewing this Netflix original and wonder why any company would spend hundreds of millions of dollars for a movie worthy of the big screen treatment and just stick it on a streaming service people watch on their phones.

Screener Squad: Irma Vep

Irma Vep Series Review

IRMA VEP SERIES REVIEW

In 1996, writer director Olivier Assayas made Irma Vep, a film about the (fictional) feature film remake of the (real) seven hour, 1915 silent serial, Les Vampires. Over 25 years later, Assayas has turned his previous film into a ten part HBO miniseries. In the original, actress Maggie Cheung played herself, cast in the lead role of Irma Vep, a high ranking member of a nefarious criminal organization known as Les Vampires. The longer she plays the role, the more Cheung finds herself subsumed by the character of Irma Vep. Meanwhile, she has to deal with the unwanted affections of the lesbian costume designer, a director who is having a nervous breakdown, a runaway production, and characters who love debating the nature of cinema, and the state of the film industry. This latest iteration builds on the original premise, but the expanded run time means Assayas can add more characters and subplots, and more scenes of the film within the film, including recreations of the making of the original 1915 film. He also manages to exponentially complicate his leading lady’s love life. Seriously, even we couldn’t keep track of all her previous lovers. In addition, Assayas has updated the dialogue to include references to contemporary cinema: the rise of superhero blockbusters, the way streaming services reduce art to content delivered by algorithms, the #metoo movement, and the blurred lines between TV and film, fact and fiction, and art and reality, itself. This time, Alicia Vikander plays the actress (the fictional Mira Harberg) cast in the title role in the film within the film which is itself a remake of the 1996 Irma Vep, only this time it’s from director Rene Vidal (Vincent Macaigne), an obvious stand-in for Assayas himself who is still trying to come to terms with the fallout of his (real life) divorce from Maggie Cheung, the actress he cast in the original remake, who appears in archival footage, but in modern scenes is played by a different actress altogether. Yeah, it’s a lot, even without the “I’m a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude” shenanigans. But was it too much for our reviewers Bradley, Frank, Sarah Jane, and Marco? This is a conversation best had in a Parisian café while drinking lots of wine and smoking Gauloise cigarettes, but since we couldn’t afford a trip to France, we did the next best thing and recorded a podcast for you to listen to, instead.

Anything's Possible Movie Review

ANYTHING’S POSSIBLE MOVIE REVIEW

Amazon Prime is sending you back to school for some LGBTQ+ education with Billy Porter’s directorial debut Anything’s Possible written by Ximena Garcia Lecuona and starring Eva Reign as Kelsa.  Kelsa is an ambitious senior trans woman with dreams of becoming a world famous animal photographer.  The beauty of the animal kingdom in all its power structures, mating seasons, and water hole gossip is not unlike that of the locker room jungle and the water fountain rumour mills of public education.  Kelsa begins to develop a friendship with Kahl (Abubakr Ali), a poet with an artistic eye whose parents would prefer he focus more on economics.  Meanwhile Kelsa’s supportive but protective single mother Selene (Hamilton’s Renée Elise Goldsberry) wants to protect her from all the fetishistic weirdos out there but risks sheltering her from shining for all the world to see.  Bradly, Jordan, Melina, and Frank discuss the authenticity of the High School romance through an LGBTQ+ lens.  Discuss the confusions of internet vlogging, no cap tik tok videos, and insane instagram rhetoric all the while Jordan gets real with some personal stories about her transition.
