DEAD FOR A DOLLAR MOVIE REVIEW

Dead for a Dollar is an old fashioned western about Max Borlund (Christoph Waltz), a bounty hunter hired by a wealthy businessman to rescue his kidnapped wife Rachel (Rachel Brosnahan). The poor woman is being held for ransom by Elijah (Brandon Scott), a buffalo soldier and army deserter. Accompanying Max is Captain Poe (Warren Burke), another buffalo soldier who served in the same regiment with the alleged kidnapper, and knows where he’s hiding. Their mission is to cross the border into Mexico and discretely extract Rachel back to the US, but Max soon realizes that the story Rachel’s husband told him was a lie. Rachel wasn’t kidnapped, she ran away from an abusive marriage with the help of Elijah, her black lover. Will Max honor his contract and return Rachel to her jealous, violent husband, or will he risk his own life to protect her? Complicating matters is a vicious Mexican land owner (Benjamin Bratt) who demands a cut of the promised ransom, as well as Joe (Willem Dafoe) a gambler and gunslinger who holds a grudge against Max for having sent him to prison. We were all excited to see a new movie from writer/director/producer Walter Hill whose contributions to tough guy cinema include such classics as The Warriors, 48 Hours, Streets of Fire, and more. This low budget western looks like it was made for just a fistful of dollars, and should have held out for a few dollars more, but was the story, acting, and directing enough to compensate for those deficiencies? Gather around the campfire as Ben, Marcos, Spider-Mike, and Marco discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly of this throwback western.

Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. He lives in Austin with his beloved Dachshund-Maltese and trusted sidekick, Dean. He can also be heard on RageSelect. He can be found on Twitter and Instagram.

HARLEY QUINN SEASON 3 REVIEW

Harley Quinn and the cob squad are back busting heads and wreaking havoc all throughout the grimy streets of Gotham. We shall all celebrate their return in the ways of Themyscira. We’re going to have a F*#ck’n Rager. Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) want the world to know they are absolutely mad for each other on the “Eat Bang Love” tour. Settling into each other as a couple the two must decide what sort of master villainy they can accomplish together and as individuals. Joker (Alan Tudyk) is back like Joker do running for Mayor and managing a family. Bruce Wayne (Diedrich Bader) is clinging to Selina Kyle (Sanaa Lathan) like the Riddler (Jim Rash) to an Inquiry, and Bane (James Adomian) just wants to refund his wedding gift. Bradly, Kim and Marcos discuss the ongoing saga of Harley Quinn from clown sidekick to romantic therapist, analyze the dynamic duos of the Arkham Asylum, and ponder what the best kind of prize would be for surviving an escape room.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: BLOOD RELATIVES

Actor Noah Segan jumps behind the camera for the first time (and then back out in front of it) as the writer/director/star of Blood Relatives, a sweet father-daughter road trip bonding movie. Oh, and they’re also vampires. Turns out once long ago, a human lover was taken and a child was born. Now, 15 years later, the human girl (Victoria Moroles) has tracked him down. Not easy to do when you’re a vampire loner, constantly driving your 70s muscle car across the country from small town to small town and trying not to leave much of a footprint. He doesn’t really want her there but with her family gone, and some vampiric instincts starting to kick in, Francis is all she’s got, whether he likes it or not (he doesn’t). What you get is an adorable Paper Moon with bloodsuckers and Chris and Wright were all about it.

Ralph Fiennes is Chef Slowik, a culinary expert so famed he asks the highest of prices to the extremely wealthy to come to a private island resort and be fed an exclusive multi-course meal by him and his sizable crew. Only this time, the entitled rich jerks are gonna get much more than they expect. Like, you know, death. Except there’s one thing that doesn’t go to plan for Chef. One of his guests has a substitute date (Anya Taylor-Joy) and she’s not really one of these rich assholes. So how to do some last-minute menu revising? Thus the devilish joys to be found in this very clever and very dark comedy that is at the top of the list for best films at Fantastic Fest for your reviewers Wright and Chris.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: SHIN ULTRAMAN

Neither Wright nor Chris has much experience with Japan’s giant alien kaiju-fighting robot Ultraman so take this review with that in mind (the super fan review is coming soon with Matt Frank and Tessa Morrison on our Giganticast show). But this reimagining of the tv show hit most of the right spots for our critics. It’s sweet, goofy, weird, and has some fun giants battling each other scenes. What else could you ask for? Well, if you answered, a female protagonist that loves grabbing her and everyone else’s butts, you get that too.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: HUNT

This new South Korean political action thriller is written, directed, and starring film legend Lee Jung-jae (you probably know him as the main character from Squid Game). Set in South Korea’s turbulent 80s when they were led by an increasingly worsening military dictator, the story follows two higher-ups in the KCIA who are set to uncover a very troubling and apparently high up in their organization mole referred to as Donglim. Guess who each one starts suspecting is the spy? Filled with great action and some of the biggest explosion scenes you’ll ever see, Hunt is a solid and deeply twisty (to the point of confusion occasionally, but you get the gist) thriller that comes highly recommended from Chris and Wright. INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: SMILE

We got to see the world premiere of this new horror film starring Sosie Bacon (does that mean we’re only one degree away from Kevin now?) at Fantastic Fest. The story follows her as a psychologist who witnesses an extremely distressed patient commit suicide in front of her but not before suddenly becoming very calm and with a huge creepy grin on her face. Turns out, witnessing the death of someone who has been targeted by this…entity(?)…marks you with a countdown timer and much like in The Ring, various hallucinations start occuring up until the moment your time comes to die and pass it on to someone else. Wright and Chris are here to pass on to you how they felt about Smile. Spoiler: only one of them was smiling.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: THE ANTARES PARADOX

The Antares Paradox is a Spanish sci-fi drama and the debut of director Luis Tinoco who works with actress Andrea Trepat in the role of Alexandra. There’s a few other actors we see in here that she makes video or phone calls to but, it’s largely Trepat’s show as she is a SETI scientist on a secluded shift at an observatory on the night of a massive hurricane. The film focuses on her reluctance to be as involved with her family as they would like because of how all-consuming this work is for her. And on the same night she gets her own ‘Wow’ signal and has to go through all the steps to confirm that it is extraterrestrial in origin, her father is dying in the hospital and her sister needs her to be there. Alexandra must decide what is truly important to her and Wright and Chris talk here about whether this film was important for them. Check out their review.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Wright Sulek (Screener Squad, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Trash in the Can, Audio Editor)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: DEEP FEAR

Sonia and Max are good friends with Henry and as a send-off before he has to go do mandatory military service, they are led by a recent friend Remy on a tour of the abandoned catacombs beneath Paris. When they meet up with the underground explorer and his friends, they are all excited to about a new entrance they’ve discovered and sure enough, our somewhat reluctant trio ends up following them in, but they’ll be very sorry they did. Deep Fear plays like The Descent but with a different type of monster and Chris and Wright are here to tell you what you need to know.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: EVERYONE WILL BURN

This Spanish horror film is playing things with a degree of comedy, but playing it with a knowing smirk as it flips aspects of The Omen on its head. Scream Queen legend Macarena Gómez plays Maria, a woman living in a small town who is absolutely not able to get over the death of her son years before, and on the verge of killing herself, Satan enters her life and fills her heart with wonderful dark revenge. Satan in the form of a young girl Lucia who appears to her calling her Mom, and then proceeds to protect her at every turn with telekinetic abilities that would make Carrie blanch. Together they are setting the town up for an apocalyptic event, but maybe the town has it coming? Listen to Chris and Wright give His dark blessing upon this film.
