BEAVIS & BUTTHEAD SEASON 9 REVIEW

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” That’s a stupid way to live life. Sure, things can be timeless, but if you don’t slap a new coat of paint on it once in a while… maybe tighten some screws… eventually “it” will be broke. So why not give it some TLC now? After all, Beavis and Butt-Head have been in the zeitgeist for 30 years now. They’re so old that the new show has two timelines. One where they’re teenagers, the other they’re middle-aged, both in our present time. It’s great. Matt, Ryan, and Chad cannot wait for the Avengers-style universe they build with Beavis and Butt-Head. For real though, this 30 year old show is somehow still relevant. Making the comedy still topical, and the riffing of music/youtube/tiktok videos makes this a definite watch. For old fans and hopefully some new ones… You butt-hole.

Matt Foster is a stand up comic, podcaster, and movie critic currently living in the greater Salt Lake City area. His lifelong love of genre film began early, when he realized they freaked out his mom. He performs (epidemics permitting) regularly on Dungeons and Comedy, a DND live play with standup comedians, and is the slightly less mustache-y half of the Nighthawks Podcast, a cinema-centric discussion cohosted by Trevor T. Trujillo.

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS SEASON 3 REVIEW

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 boldly goes (again) into the realm of comedy, with enough gags, easter eggs, cameos, and deep cut references to fill the hold of a California-class starship. Season 2 ended on an uncharacteristically bleak cliffhanger, with Captain Freeman under arrest for having destroyed the Pakled homeworld. Season 3 picks up right where we left off, with ensign Mariner determined to clear her mother’s name. Of course, she’s got the help of her fellow Cerritos lower deckers, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford, and a holographic Zefram Cochrane, and a stolen amusement park ride, and… wait, what? Oh yeah, this is Lower Decks, so things can and will get ridiculous. This season offers up an overarching narrative, mixed in with fun stand alone episodes, character development, wacky hijinks, and plenty of loving, self-aware snark. Along the way, we encounter legacy characters, and locations, the redemption of disgraced exocomp and former ensign Peanut Hamper, and the introduction of the Texas-class drone starships which threaten to make the Cerritos and all California-class ships obsolete. Oh, and did I mention the long awaited return to everybody’s favorite “tacky Cardassian fascist eyesore”? That’s right, we (finally) go back to Deep Space Nine! Our very own Oneofus lower deckers Eliot, Jordan, Harmony, and Marco stepped away from the dabo tables long enough to record this review. Was Lower Decks Season 3 their cup of Earl Grey, hot? Or should it be ejected along with the warp core? Listen and find out!

CALL JANE MOVIE REVIEW

It’s a goddamn travesty that a movie about women risking their lives seeking out safe abortions in a time when they were illegal would still be poignant and reflective of our modern times, but here we are. Call Jane stars Elizabeth Banks as Joy, a married woman who is in the midst of a pregnancy that will end her life if brought to term. When she isn’t allowed to get a legal abortion, and after considering all other options, she finds a group of suburban women known as the Jane Collective, led by Virgina (Sigourney Weaver), and her life is forever changed. Jane was an underground women’s health service in Chicago, from 1969 to 1973. The collective sought to address the increasing number of unsafe abortions being performed by untrained providers. Since illegal abortions were not only dangerous but very expensive, the founding members of the collective believed that they could provide women with safer and more affordable access to the procedure. But how does this film handle the history of the Janes? Do the performances and narrative do justice to some of the most influential women and allies in the war for the right of a woman to make autonomous decisions about her own body and reproductive functions? Melina, T.C. and Bradly discuss this biopic with the understanding that there is a much, much larger conversation to be had about not just the moment in American history this movie portrays but our current world.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. THE MIDNIGHT CLUB SERIES REVIEW

Just in time for the Halloween Season, Netflix proudly presents…21 Jump Scares! Ok, no it’s actually called The Midnight Club BUT this show does now officially hold the Guinness World Record for Most Jump Scares Used in a Single Episode of Television. But don’t be so quick to recoil my fellow horror fans: this is not a ten-hour parade of tired haunted house tropes. This is, in fact, the newest series helmed by the great Mike Flanagan, who has already brought forth such masterworks as Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House, Gerald’s Game and Midnight Mass. The Midnight Club follows the character of Ilonka (Iman Benson), a teenage girl who, upon the eve of her High School graduation, is diagnosed with cancer. After an unsuccessful slew of treatments, Ilonka decides to instead enter a youth hospice with a storied and mysterious past. It’s not long after her arrival that her fellow residents initiate her into the Midnight Club, a nightly get-together where everyone sneaks out of their rooms into the basement to drink wine and tell each other scary stories. As Ilonka and her new friends begin to bond, it becomes clear that the hospice may not be what it seems, and dark forces may be awakening within its halls…cue the Castle Thunder. Mike Flanagan is a master of creating horror with a tremendous amount of heart. One minute you’re huddled under the blanket, the next you’re reaching for the tissues while contemplating the true meaning of existence. Does The Midnight Club pack the emotional weight of Flanagan’s past series? That’s what card-carrying Flanagan fans Rose, Tessa and Melina have come together to determine.

ARCHER SEASON 13 REVIEW

As you can see, depending on when you met this Oakland, California native, you have experienced a completely different person, each time. After finally deciding on a 13+year career choice as a Videographer and Radio Personality, Jena balances her time between pursuing her Doctorate in Philosophy, providing insightful and funny critiques on films and Television, raising her daughter and dog in Ohio, and constantly fighting off the existential dread that is being a dope black woman in America in the 20th century.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

THE STRANGER MOVIE REVIEW

Who doesn’t love a good true crime story? Grizzly encounters with sociopaths or serial killers. Dark, slow, suspenseful, and based on true events. Netflix has so many murder shows and movies, those of you who fall asleep to Forensic Files or whatever the new cult docuseries is, will never have a sleepless night. And then there are the based on true event murder movies, which while plentiful, are often not as intense or as captivating as the documentaries lulling you into slumber. And this is exactly the conversation Rae, Neil, and T.C. had after watching The Stranger. This film is inspired by the 2008 murder investigation of Daniel Morcombe in Queensland, Australia. Morcombe’s disappearance was one of the most extensively investigated crimes in Queensland’s and in Australia’s history. This film follows the final stages of the investigation. Mark (Joel Edgerton) and Henry (Sean Harris) have just met. They appear to be complete strangers and begin to get involved with illicit dealings. They go on tense, largely silent drives where they meet with men of questionable morals in parking lots and motels. Over time, Henry begins to trust Mark, which is exactly what Mark needs, as he is, in fact, not who he claims to be. He is an undercover police officer attempting to determine if Henry is the perpetrator of the kidnapping of a teenager years earlier. But, before you decide if that sounds like an intense and engaging story, this description just might be more thrilling than the movie itself.

I have attended and worked for Fantastic Fest and South by Southwest for many years. I married a film geek as well. While we don’t agree on everything, we agree on our love of movies.

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can)

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

Danni Button (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Danni’s expertise lies in comic books, superhero movies, science fiction/fantasy, horror, and cheesy dad jokes. They spent 5 years creating YouTube content about comic books for The Weirdlings, and now they’ve awoken from the Geeksleep ready to speculate about various multiverses, fandom life, and weird but adorable ‘ships.

GAME OF THRONES: HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SERIES REVIEW

In 2019, Winter came in like a wrecking ball and left with a whimper. Ice King’s melted, bastards were battled, and democracy for the elite had come to Westeros. 200 years before, an internal succession war waged on with in the halls of the house Targaryen. House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones prequel based on the novel Fire and Blood by George R. R. Martin and created for tv by Ryan Condal. King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) has declared his daughter the Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock/Emma D’arcy) next in line and the lords and lady’s of the realm protest this progressive decree. The hand of the king Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) persuades his young daughter Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey/Olivia Cooke) to befriend the king in his time of need so the needs of their own house can be cemented in greatness. Meanwhile the king’s brother Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) looks for the path of most resistance and violence to prove his worth a future king. Over the course of 21 years sensible advice will be ignored, cloaks will be worn while brandishing daggers, and men of power will offer their daughters as means to birth a male heir in the patriarchal world of Westeros. Bradly holds court with Eliot, Neil, and Melina as they discuss the impact on pop culture this return of Game of Thrones has, the effective story telling of the time jump, and marvel at the magnificence of the many types of dragons in the world of Westeros.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Eliot Nelson (Screener Squad, Staff Writer)

Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible. His favorite movies include The Lord of the Rings, City of God, Dawn of the Dead, and Groundhog Day. When not rambling to himself about the ineptness of entertainment executives, Eliot posts infrequently on Twitter and squawks regularly on his podcast The Debasement Tapes.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

V/H/S 99 MOVIE REVIEW

It’s very rare for the 5th film in a series to still have an impact on it’s audiences. Concepts get overplayed/recycled to death, and overall the concept can feel stale, even if your audiences want more. V/H/S/99 doesn’t suffer from any sequelitis, in fact, because these movies are anthologies, I think that’s why they can keep pumping them out. All the stories have a moral, but they all stand out in their own way. With 5 different segments, each written/directed by a different group, this movie keeps you engaged until the end. Even the lowest lows are good, that’s how awesome this movie is. It’s almost Halloween, do yourself a favor and watch the latest installment in the found-footage anthology V/H/S series. Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. Trevor T. Trujillo is a One Of Us contributor in addition to being the co-host, co-founder, and co-producer of the Nighthawks Podcast. Trevor’s 17-year media career spans multiple arenas including television, radio, podcasting, and online journalism; and he is currently the editor-in-chief for a regional online news provider in the Rocky Mountain West. Often a nomad, Trevor has found himself “at home” in places like Austin, Texas; West Hollywood, California; and throughout central and southeastern Wyoming. Matt Foster is a stand up comic, podcaster, and movie critic currently living in the greater Salt Lake City area. His lifelong love of genre film began early, when he realized they freaked out his mom. Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

THE WATCHER SERIES REVIEW

Ready or not, here comes a thirsty, horny, cheeky, scandalous bit of gossip driven thriller from the minds of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Teaming up with Netflix once again, The Watcher is the true story of Nora and Dean Brannock (Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale) who busted the bank to broker the real estate deal of a lifetime. The move has taken them out to the suburbs with their son and daughter into a home coveted by the whole neighbourhood. Their neighbours are getting in line to let the family know how special the historical home and how maybe their family doesn’t deserve it. To make things worst the Barretts are also receiving threatening letters signed “The Watcher” but the police are writing it off as a mean spirited prank. With the help of detective Birch (Noma Dumezweni) the Brannocks will have to sort fact from fiction and wade through rumours and gossip from the house’s past and their own in order to solve the secrets of The Watcher. Bradly, Frank, and Kim wonder what witchcraft Ryan Murphy has wrought to get such a huge ensemble including Mia Farrow, Jennifer Coolidge, Margo Martindale, and Richard Kind into this 7 episode miniseries.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive.
