The Stranger Movie Review

THE STRANGER MOVIE REVIEW

Who doesn’t love a good true crime story? Grizzly encounters with sociopaths or serial killers. Dark, slow, suspenseful, and based on true events. Netflix has so many murder shows and movies, those of you who fall asleep to Forensic Files or whatever the new cult docuseries is, will never have a sleepless night. And then there are the based on true event murder movies, which while plentiful, are often not as intense or as captivating as the documentaries lulling you into slumber. And this is exactly the conversation Rae, Neil, and T.C. had after watching The Stranger. This film is inspired by the 2008 murder investigation of Daniel Morcombe in Queensland, Australia. Morcombe’s disappearance was one of the most extensively investigated crimes in Queensland’s and in Australia’s history. This film follows the final stages of the investigation. Mark (Joel Edgerton) and Henry (Sean Harris) have just met. They appear to be complete strangers and begin to get involved with illicit dealings. They go on tense, largely silent drives where they meet with men of questionable morals in parking lots and motels. Over time, Henry begins to trust Mark, which is exactly what Mark needs, as he is, in fact, not who he claims to be. He is an undercover police officer attempting to determine if Henry is the perpetrator of the kidnapping of a teenager years earlier. But, before you decide if that sounds like an intense and engaging story, this description just might be more thrilling than the movie itself.

You can call me Rae. You can also call me a film lover. I’ll watch it all — small screen; big screen, and everything in between. I have attended and worked for Fantastic Fest and South by Southwest for many years. I married a film geek as well. While we don’t agree on everything, we agree on our love of movies.

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

House of the Dragon Series Review

GAME OF THRONES: HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SERIES REVIEW

In 2019, Winter came in like a wrecking ball and left with a whimper. Ice King’s melted, bastards were battled, and democracy for the elite had come to Westeros. 200 years before, an internal succession war waged on with in the halls of the house Targaryen. House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones prequel based on the novel Fire and Blood by George R. R. Martin and created for tv by Ryan Condal. King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) has declared his daughter the Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock/Emma D’arcy) next in line and the lords and lady’s of the realm protest this progressive decree. The hand of the king Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) persuades his young daughter Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey/Olivia Cooke) to befriend the king in his time of need so the needs of their own house can be cemented in greatness. Meanwhile the king’s brother Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) looks for the path of most resistance and violence to prove his worth a future king. Over the course of 21 years sensible advice will be ignored, cloaks will be worn while brandishing daggers, and men of power will offer their daughters as means to birth a male heir in the patriarchal world of Westeros. Bradly holds court with Eliot, Neil, and Melina as they discuss the impact on pop culture this return of Game of Thrones has, the effective story telling of the time jump, and marvel at the magnificence of the many types of dragons in the world of Westeros.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible. His favorite movies include The Lord of the Rings, City of God, Dawn of the Dead, and Groundhog Day. When not rambling to himself about the ineptness of entertainment executives, Eliot posts infrequently on Twitter and squawks regularly on his podcast The Debasement Tapes.

But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

V/H/S 99 MOVIE REVIEW

It’s very rare for the 5th film in a series to still have an impact on it’s audiences. Concepts get overplayed/recycled to death, and overall the concept can feel stale, even if your audiences want more. V/H/S/99 doesn’t suffer from any sequelitis, in fact, because these movies are anthologies, I think that’s why they can keep pumping them out. All the stories have a moral, but they all stand out in their own way. With 5 different segments, each written/directed by a different group, this movie keeps you engaged until the end. Even the lowest lows are good, that’s how awesome this movie is. It’s almost Halloween, do yourself a favor and watch the latest installment in the found-footage anthology V/H/S series. You can send thank you candy to Chad, Trevor, Matt, and Lewayne.

The Watcher Series Review

THE WATCHER SERIES REVIEW

Ready or not, here comes a thirsty, horny, cheeky, scandalous bit of gossip driven thriller from the minds of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Teaming up with Netflix once again, The Watcher is the true story of Nora and Dean Brannock (Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale) who busted the bank to broker the real estate deal of a lifetime. The move has taken them out to the suburbs with their son and daughter into a home coveted by the whole neighbourhood. Their neighbours are getting in line to let the family know how special the historical home and how maybe their family doesn’t deserve it. To make things worst the Barretts are also receiving threatening letters signed “The Watcher” but the police are writing it off as a mean spirited prank. With the help of detective Birch (Noma Dumezweni) the Brannocks will have to sort fact from fiction and wade through rumours and gossip from the house’s past and their own in order to solve the secrets of The Watcher. Bradly, Frank, and Kim wonder what witchcraft Ryan Murphy has wrought to get such a huge ensemble including Mia Farrow, Jennifer Coolidge, Margo Martindale, and Richard Kind into this 7 episode miniseries.

Highly Suspect Reviews: Black Adam

Black Adam Movie Review

BLACK ADAM MOVIE REVIEW

So, from what it sounds like to me, The Rock walked right into WB offices, said, here, I’m Black Adam. Make the movie, and turned around and walked out. That’s my imagining of it anyway. I’ll tell you that DC’s latest super-hero film definitely feels like a bunch of executives scrambling around to patchwork a script to please Hollywood’s biggest money-maker. Adam is decidedly a b to c list DC character, but one who had some interesting work done on him by writer Geoff Johns and others in the late 90s who turned him into an anti-hero. Tertiary to (hard to even call it a spin-off) the Shazam! movie, Adam also has all those Shazam powers, gifted to him by the wizards, but his story played out differently. Resurrected after thousands of years by the speaking of his magic word, he quickly gets to work murderizing all of a militant group called Intergang who have taken over his home city. Soon, the Justice Society of America’s d-team is sent out after him to put a stop to the carnage (however justified) comprising of Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo). Lots of CG fisticuffs ensue. Chris, Sarah, Mike, and Kim are the Critics Society of America A-team who is sent out to review this movie.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE MOVIE REVIEW

A three leaf clover embodied on two fuzzy dice made from fur of a lucky rabbit’s foot aint got nothing on Ani Fanelli!  She’s the Luckiest Girl Alive in the Netflix thriller adapted from Jessica Knoll’s best seller of the same name.  Ani (Mila Kunis) is just 6 weeks out from exchanging I do’s with successful dream boat finance Luke Harrison (Finn Wittrock).  Whether he’s denouncing carbs to keep a perfect figure or writing her magazine’s number one article about erotic intimacy, Ani’s presence is proof that a girl can have it all and have it all together.  That is until Aaron Wickersham (Dalmar Abuzeid) requests that Ani join his tell all documentary about a tragedy that took place at her private school many years ago.  Young Ani (Chiara Aurelia) was not so lucky.  Trigger warning people, this is in fact a film about sexual violence and mass shootings.  Ani will have to decide whether to tell her story and expose her future to scrutiny from the worst kinds of people or remain silent.  Rose, T.C. and Bradly discuss the difficult process of adaptation, pine for Mila Kunis and her provocative performance, and say Boo to Netflix and it’s lack of heads up regarding all the rape scenes.

You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Spirit Halloween: The Movie Movie Review

SPIRIT HALLOWEEN: THE MOVIE MOVIE REVIEW

Let’s get straight to the point here. We all knew that a Halloween movie based off a seasonal store that likes to pop it’s head up every Fall (like my herpes) was going to be “iffy” at best. Oh boy, were we wrong. Take a coming of age story, mix in the old “Halloween is for kids” plot line, and a bunch of over-priced, toxic, plastic… That’s Spirit Halloween The Movie. Not even by the grace of Christopher Lloyd can this film be saved from the bargain bin. No… No, bargain bin is too good for this movie. Lewayne, Mindy, Matt, and Chad have made funeral arrangements for Spirit Halloween. This abomination to the world needs to be blown up, cremated, and buried… behind the Spirit Halloween store that used to be the Blockbuster Video.

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

” width=Mindy Rast-Keenan (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

Matt Foster (Screener Squad)

Matt Foster is a stand up comic, podcaster, and movie critic currently living in the greater Salt Lake City area. His lifelong love of genre film began early, when he realized they freaked out his mom. He performs (epidemics permitting) regularly on Dungeons and Comedy, a DND live play with standup comedians, and is the slightly less mustache-y half of the Nighthawks Podcast, a cinema-centric discussion cohosted by Trevor T. Trujillo.

Screener Squad: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Series Review

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER SERIES REVIEW

“Well, I’m back”. With this final line spoken by best hobbit all time, Samwise Gamgee (Bilbo Baggins is the runner up), the greatest fantasy trilogy film and novel series came to a satisfying close. Some say however what IPs make money can never truly die. After an alleged $1 billion dollar legal transaction between Amazon and the Tolkien estate, eight episodes over an hour in length each featuring stories from the the appendices of Tolkien lore were forged. The first age of middle earth is over and the dark evil Morgoth has been defeated. The Balrog have fled underground and Sauron the shapeshifting wicked servant of Morgoth has disappeared. The beginning of the 2nd age is at hand. Well, who’s back? Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) is not satisfied with peace in a world of evil lurking in the shadows. She rejects the lands of the undying and vows to hunt down Sauron and make him pay for killing and branding her brother. Also the king of the elves himself Elrond (Robert Aramayo) has returned, and though he’s a lot younger by elven standards he’s just as diplomatic and persuasive as ever. He’ll travel to Khazad-dûm and quarrel with the dwarf prince Durin IV and his wife Princess Disa (Sophia Nomvete). There’s also a slew of new characters like Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) an Elven ranger with over 200 years of combat, Bronwyn (Nazanin Boniadi) who has an unrequited love for the elf, and her son Theo (Tyroe Muhafidin) who may have chanced upon a dark artifact tied directly to Sauron’s return. Meanwhile, a man has plummeted from the sky with no recollection of self or purpose (Daniel Weyman). This stranger is found by a nomadic group called Harfoots. Nori Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenagh) befriends the stranger, setting into a motion a call to adventure. Throw in the Númenor and road trip with the boys plot featuring Isildur (Maxim Baldry) with some future king intrigue from handsome faced Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) and you’ve just scratched the surface of this huge ensemble of several intertwining plots. Bradly, Ryan, and Neil discuss their relationship with the long standing works. Ponder how many people makes too many characters for a series, and decide if this is the mythril of epic fantasy or a thousand pounds of fools gold.

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. You can follow him on Twitter but you’ll probably regret it.

Screener Squad: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

She-Hulk Series Review

SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW SERIES REVIEW

After a freak accident, attorney Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) is contaminated by her cousin’s blood which contains lethal levels of gamma radiation. Ordinarily, that would mean death, but when your genetic cousin is Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), the Incredible Hulk himself, that means you get Hulk powers, too. Unfortunately for Jen, balancing her personal life with a career in a male dominated profession is about to get exponentially more difficult once the world learns she has superpowers. While humor has always been a staple of the MCU, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is Marvel Studio’s first live action situation comedy. A very self-aware, very meta, legal sitcom, to be exact. Years before Deadpool hit the comic book stands, She-Hulk was smashing the fourth wall, and offering up a stream of in-jokes and metacommentary that skewered the superhero genre, the comic book industry, and fan expectations. Like her comic book counterpart, TV show Jen knows she’s a character in a TV show and often addresses the audience to critique toxic fanboys, the show’s writing, and Marvel’s own formulaic approach to blockbuster story-telling. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has a stacked cast, fun MCU cameos, and an irreverent sense of meta-humor, but was that enough to successfully make the transition from page to screen? Our crack legal team Harmoni, Beau, Sarah Jane, and Marco overrule any objections from online trolls, and deliver their final arguments for why you should give this sweet and silly show a fair trial.

By day, Marco is a mild-mannered office worker, but by night he is a mild-mannered movie watcher. He does other mild-mannered stuff too.

Beau Paul (Highly Suspect Reviews, The Original Gentlemen, Screener Squad)

Beau Paul is an Austin native, an actor, and a writer. Sometimes all at once! Previously he has attempted to be an internet entertainer (the funny ha-ha kind, not the naked moneymaking kind) at Spill.com, and now here on OneOfUs.net. You can read his pithy witticisms and the retweeted material of funnier, cleverer people on Twitter or Facebook, and can buy him stuff on Amazon.

Sarah Jane (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Sarah Jane was born and raised in Southern California but currently calls Austin, TX her home. She’s seen over 5,700 movies so far with zero plans on stopping. She has a penchant for all things exploitation, and she loves Godzilla with all her heart. Her favorite films are Deep Red, Le Samourai, and Miller’s Crossing. When she isn’t watching movies, she’s busy herding her four cats, her husband, and her 11-year-old kiddo. She’s been a contributor to TalkFilmSociety, Daily Grindhouse, FThisMovie!, Looper, and the Austin Chronicle. You can find her on Twitter and Letterboxd at @fookthis.

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!
