WHEN YOU FINISH SAVING THE WORLD MOVIE REVIEW

Gen Xers are typically described as resourceful, independent, and good at maintaining work-life balance. They were the first generation to grow up with personal computers, though not many are going to be able to wrap their heads around Twitch. Gen Xers tend to have liberal views on social issues, and that is helping raise Generation Z, which considers itself more accepting and open-minded than any generation before it. The majority of Zoomers support political and social movements such as Black Lives Matter, transgender rights, and climate change. That’s a great group raising a new greater group, right? Well, on paper, yeah. But parents are gonna parent. And teenagers gotta teenage. And in Jesse Eisenberg’s writer/director debut, he taps into the very essence of the Gen X parent/Gen Z child relationship in very authentic and cringely humorous ways. Julianne Moore plays Evelyn, a social worker at a women’s shelter doing her best to live a virtuous life while raising Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard), a Twitch streaming singer songwriter who will definitely tell you about how much his 20,000 followers love his totally original songs about graduating the 8th grade and totally feeling alone after moving schools and leaving all his friends behind. As this mother and son can’t (or maybe just refuse) to connect, they try to find that bond in other people. Evelyn latches on to a young boy she meets at her women’s shelter, while Ziggy falls in love with an extremely political student at school. Jena, Bradly, Mike, and T.C. share what they related to most in this story, which may include awkward conversations with girls and what would happen if one of their kids talked to them like Ziggy does.

Jena Perry (Screener Squad)

Jena Perry. Aka Luna. Aka Dion. Aka Memori. Aka Dog whisperer. Aka whiskey connoisseur. As you can see, depending on when you met this Oakland, California native, you have experienced a completely different person, each time. After finally deciding on a 13+year career choice as a Videographer and Radio Personality, Jena balances her time between pursuing her Doctorate in Philosophy, providing insightful and funny critiques on films and Television, raising her daughter and dog in Ohio, and constantly fighting off the existential dread that is being a dope black woman in America in the 20th century.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). T.C. De Witt (Screener Squad)

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. EXTRAORDINARY SERIES REVIEW

Imagine a world where everyone gets a super power on their 18th birthday. Well, almost everyone. From Walt Disney Studios comes Extraordinary, the story of Jen, a snarky, 26 year old slacker, and one of the rare people who doesn’t have a superpower. HOUSE PARTY MOVIE REVIEW

In 1990, cinema was given a generation defining comedy that brought together hip hop duo Kid ‘n Play and the comedic chops of legends like Robin Harris and John Witherspoon. It was a teen romp about a fez-shaped fade-wearing kid going to a party at his friend’s house. However, after a fight at school, our hero’s father grounds him. But when has that ever stopped a teenager determined to go to a party and hook up? He sneaks out when his father falls asleep and spends the night living his best life, dancing, cracking wise, and dodging three of the thugs from school who’ve decided to give him a lesson in behaviour. What more could a teen ask for? Simple as that, House Party was a movie that tapped into the very vein of hip hop and black culture of the time and became a classic, inspiring a lot of what followed in pop culture and teen films. House Party was tapping into something that John Hughes had done in the 80’s for suburban white kids and John Landis had done with Animal House in the late 70’s — what American Pie would do at the end of the century. So, if you’re going to remake something so influential and important to black cinema and cinema at large, there’s a bar that’s been set, and Sarah Jane, Chad, Ryan, and T.C., (along with special guest Jena) are here to discuss whether or not this remake has risen to the standards of the original. Aspiring club promoters and best buddies Damon (Doctor Who‘s Tosin Cole) and Kevin (Jacob Latimore) are barely keeping things together. Out of money, down on their luck and about to lose the roofs over their heads, they need a huge windfall to make their problems go away. They soon decide to host the party of the year at an exclusive mansion, which just happens to belong to none other than NBA superstar LeBron James. Not exactly hitting the notes of the original House Party, but there is in fact a house and a party in it, so, good?

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. JUNG_E MOVIE REVIEW

Streaming on Netflix and from the internationally acclaimed mind of Yeon Sang-Ho, step off the Train to Busan and into the post apocalyptic world of Jung_E. In the distant future, mankind has traveled into space to escape the desolate trash-ridden war-torn wastelands of earth. Three space stations were built to save mankind and just like mankind do, more war has erupted between the people that now inhabit the stars. A heroic soldier named Yun Jung-Yi (Kim Hyun-Joo) has become the pride and hope of the military. We’re talking huge victories over impossible odds resulting in a celebrity status that would even make Nicholas Cage blush, with cereal boxes, toaster ovens, action figures, and maybe even an uninspired christmas album. Eventually the day comes when Jung-Yi doesn’t survive her mission but her brain has been saved by the government. A team of scientists led by Yun Seo-Hyun with a complete lack of morals and ethics use her brain to create a platoon of perfect super soldiers called Jung_E. Bradly, LeWayne, and Dogget deliberate the ethics behind privatizing an identity for military action and monetary gain, ponder ethics behind a dead soldier’s rights in the face of billion dollar opportunities, and discuss which One of Us action figure would line the most pockets.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

John and Chris team up for this first of a two-parter Digital Noise with a WIDE variety of stuff to talk about. From avant-garde French hipsters to a film some called the black American Graffiti. Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). KALEIDOSCOPE SERIES REVIEW

The Heist genre has given us some classic films: Heat, Inception, Ocean’s 11, to name a few. The tropes are similar if not the same for every one of these stories. A ragtag group of criminals is brought together by the old pro looking to pull off one last job that will set them all up for life. We get deception, disguises, acrobatics, car chases, betrayal, and the elaborate planning that inevitably goes wrong on the day. And typically, we see this all through the perspective of the criminals themselves, presented as our heroes and usually far more developed than the opposition, or at least more colorful, which is quite punny considering the newest entry in the heist genre Netflix’s Kaleidoscope, an 8-part mini-series. The show centers Ray (Giancarlo Esposito) putting together a crew of crooks and connives to target one of the richest men in New York (Rufus Sewell) to execute the largest heist ever attempted. The show moves back and forth through time and shows us the vengeance, scheming, loyalties, and betrayals that surround the Big Job. Each episode is titled after a different color: Black, Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Orange, Violet, Pink, and White. And here’s the gimmick. All eight episodes can be watched in any order; with Black as a brief intro explaining the show’s concept, and the episode White always placed as the series finale, giving 5040 possible ways in which the episodes can be watched. And here to guide you through the twisted tale of thievery and deception is Kimberly, Bradly, Mindy, and T.C. But who of the Squad can be trusted? Who among these four have their own plan in mind?

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

ALICE, DARLING MOVIE REVIEW

The greatest UK Pop sensation of all time once sang, “If you wanna be my lover you gotta get with my friends”. Or was it, “All you need is love”? Alice, Darling is the story of Alice (Anna Kendrick) who happens to have two wonderful friends named Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) and Sophie (Wunmi Mosaku). Alice also has an tall, dark, and handsome artist boyfriend named Simon (Charlie Carrick). Simon says wear this dress. Simon says wear these earrings. Simon says your job makes you unhappy. Simon says your friends are manipulative old hags that just want to bring you down. Simon never raises his voice but what he says goes. Tess and Sophie invite Alice to a remote cabin by the lake for a birthday party weekend but instead of having cake they serve up Alice with an intervention. If the tensions of an abusive relationship weren’t enough, word in town is a missing woman is presumed dead so do please keep a look out for her. Directed by Mary Nighy and written by Alanna Francis and Mark Van de Ven, Alice, Darling is a film about the people we feel we are suppose to cherish and the beloved friends in our lives who actually cherish us. Bradly, Jordan, and Melina discuss their own personal struggles with anxiety, Anna Kendrick’s subdued performance as a woman silently screaming for help, and discuss the power of cinema’s ability to start a conversation whether it be about the stars of Pitch Perfect or red flag relationships.

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

THE PALE BLUE EYE MOVIE REVIEW

There will always be a willing and vivacious audience for the bloody twists and turns of crime dramas. Netflix could indeed indulge in presenting an offshoot streaming service with their abundance of murder serials, documentaries of men with malicious intent, and motion pictures of scandal and treachery. However when one discusses the dark and grim ventures of murder, no matter how loquacious or restrained, and no matter what era said death and forbidding takes place, the less the engaged audience is informed of when beginning on such a grim path, the more enjoyable the experience, and the more one so inclined to do may participate in solving the bloody conundrum. So, as Rae, Matt, Eliot, and T.C. gather in the Screener Squad drawing room before the warmth and security of the fire to discuss The Pale Blue Eye, they attempt to keep spoilers to a minimum. But what is this tale of woe entail? Well allow us a brief synopsis of the lore. 1830, alcoholic retired detective Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) is asked by the military to investigate the hanging of Cadet Leroy Fry at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Landor is a widower who lives alone since his daughter Mathilde ran off a few years previously. This murder leads our crack investigator onto a path of the occult and other murders that could possibly be connected. It could even mean evidence of a serial killer, which Landor tracks with the help of a young cadet with an aptitude for murder mysteries. A cadet named Edgar Allen Poe (Harry Melling). Now, gather, friends, to hear the Squad’s thoughts and feelings on The Pale Blue Eye.

Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Good afternoon and welcome aboard One Of Us Flight 262, destination Plane review. Your flight crew today will be Captain T.C., with co-pilot Lewayne, and our main flight attendant Chad. On behalf of the entire crew, we would like to thank you for choosing to join us today. Before we begin our auditory ascent, we would like to take a moment to go over some important information. In the event you are choosing a movie to watch this weekend and the kiddos are seeing Puss in Boots, mom and your mature teens are watching Oscar bait like The Whale and The Fabelmans, and the rest of the family is seeing Avatar: Wow, That’s a lot of Water, and the man’s man of the family is looking for a guy flick that’s got guns and explosions, please follow the lights toward Plane. This film stars Gerard Butler as pilot Brodie Torrance, an airline captain who saves his passengers from a lightning strike by making a risky landing on a war-torn island — only to find that surviving the landing was just the beginning. When dangerous rebels take most of the passengers hostage, the only person Torrance can count on for help is Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter), an accused murderer who was being transported by the FBI. Our review crew will guide you through the proper procedures and expectations for indulging in this film. Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network.
