THE LOST KING MOVIE REVIEW

Based on a true story, The Lost King follows Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins), a middle aged woman just stuck… Until she sees a performance of Richard III, and now the dead King follows her around. She takes it as a sign that she needs to find Richard’s body, which was never recovered after the War of the Roses ended. Philippa makes it her personal mission to not only find the dead King, but to give him a proper burial. So this is all well and good, but according to our critic Mindy, this movie fights Tudor propaganda with more propaganda. On top of that, if you’re not down with the historical events of the British monarchy, this movie just seems like manufactured tension the whole time. It acts and feels like a movie, but in the end, it just feels like more propaganda. So sit back and relax, as Chad, Jordan, and Melina, all get schooled on the Tudors and Shakespearean propaganda. Also, propaganda (just had to say it one more time).

A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

CHAMPIONS MOVIE REVIEW

Champions (a Bobby Farrelly joint) tells the story of Marcus (Woody Harrelson). After a tiff on the court and a drunk driving charge, Marcus is sentenced to 90 days coaching a local community center’s intellectually challenged basketball team. It’s a very formulaic situation for a sports/underdog movie, but that doesn’t take away how adorable this movie is. With an awesome cast and script, even the moments you know are coming, still subvert your expectations. Champions is exactly as advertised and is a real treat to watch. Need more convincing? Then join Lewayne, Frank, and Chad as they discuss their pick n’ roll boners for this movie.

PALM TREES AND POWER LINES MOVIE REVIEW

Although this film was a massive darling at Sundance, receiving glowing reviews and honors, it took several months for the film to find distribution. The reason, according to director Jamie Dack, is that no company wanted to touch a movie that tackles such a controversial subject. Seventeen-year-old Lea (Lily McInerny) spends her summer break aimlessly tanning in her backyard with her best friend, tiptoeing around her needy mother as the woman floats from boyfriend to boyfriend, and getting stoned with a group of boys from school. This monotony is interrupted by a chance encounter with an older man, Tom (Jonathan Tucker). What follows is a slow, tension filled exploration of child grooming. This is a horror movie, but not in the traditional sense. It is a terrifying glimpse of the life of an American teen girl as harrowing as Euphoria. If you have any triggers involving sexual predators or emotional sexual abuse, please don’t proceed with this review or film. Rose, T.C., Bradly, and Lewayne discuss this stark and harrowing tale, knowing full well rather quickly that while Lea may see Tom as the solution to all her problems, which are little more than the average doldrums of a teen who hasn’t figured out their life yet, it’s not a wild leap to see that a 34 year old talking to a seventeen-year-old is not a man of virtue or integrity.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. A LITTLE WHITE LIE MOVIE REVIEW

Toni Morrison once said the ability of the writers to imagine what is not the self, to familiarize the strange and mystify the familiar, is the test of their power. Michael Shannon plays a handyman living in New York city who’s mistaken for a very famous, private, and reclusive writer named Shriver. Simone Cleary (Kate Hudson) and Don Johnson (T. Wasserman) invite him to a university where he is to deliver a keynote address at the school’s literary festival. When a poet named Blythe tears down Shriver’s now outdated and problematic work, all eyes are on Shriver when Blythe suddenly goes missing. Written and directed by Michael Maren, the film explores the power of identity, self discovery, and the mischief that can occur when writing fiction with your mouth. Bradly, Frank, LeWayne, and Rae discuss the positives and negatives of a the film’s juggling act between light hearted comedy and dark murder mystery followed by the fawning over Kate Hudson, Michael Shannon, and Mr. Nash Bridges himself, Don Johnson. Zach Braff is also in the cast but hey, not every ensemble is perfect.

SCREAM VI MOVIE REVIEW

Who would have thought that the comedy-slasher that introduced most folks to meta-horror in 1996 would still be going strong all these years later? Sure, there have been missteps along the way (I’m looking at you, Scream 3) but largely the series has found the right notes to adapt with the times and with the ‘rules of horror’ as they change. After the ‘requel’ Scream from last year, the story has finally let Sidney Prescott go have her happy ending as for the first time, she’s not part of the cast. Instead, the film follows sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter (Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega) as they and the other two survivors from the last film have relocated to NYC. Hoping to be free of the Ghostface legacy, a wave of conspiracy theories on the internet accuse Sam of being the secret manipulator of the killers from the last film and the true villain. And even she’s not sure how safe she is to be around, as she’s still hallucinating her father (Skeet Ulrich), the original Ghostface, telling her to kill. And of course, there’s a new Ghostface taking out their friends group. Who is it this time? Is there more than one (like usual)? Is it one of their friends or someone from the past? All these questions and more will be answered in the sixth installment that’s back with some serious blood and pretty darn good whodunnit vibes. Listen to Chris, Wright, Alan, and Frank revel in their Scream fandom and rank this one against the rest of the series. And no, we don’t spoil who the killer or killers are so you’re safe.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). WE HAVE A GHOST MOVIE REVIEW

Due to Frank Presley (Anthony Mackie) constantly trying and failing at get rich quick schemes, the Presleys find themselves moving into a cheap, old ass, house in the Chicago ‘burbs. One thing they didn’t count on was “Ernest,” the ghost that lives in the attic (David Harbour). Frank’s younger son Kevin (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) makes it his mission to help the amnesiac Ernest remember who he was and how he died. Frank sees this as an opportunity to exploit Ernest and make some green. It all comes to a head when the US govt. finds out about Ernest’s existence, and wants to poke and prod the poor specter. Anyways, this is supposed to be a family movie, but it earns it PG-13 rating… So it’s kind of a toss up on who this is for. And don’t bother asking Rae, Ben, Lewayne and Chad… because they don’t know either.

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. EMILY MOVIE REVIEW

Actress Frances O’Connor makes her writer/director debut with Emily, the story of the introverted and brilliant author Emily Brontë. After the death of her mother, young Emily (Emma Mackey) is living her own gothic story. This reclusive and shy poet shut off from the world is to go to school for higher education. Her sister Charlotte (Alexandra Dowling) wishes she would conform to some degree of normalcy so the rumors of her strange behaviour will stop troubling their family, but her brother Branwell (Fionn Whitehead) believes she should share all of her darkness with the world and embrace the freedom only opium can bring. Meanwhile William Weightman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), the young eligible bachelor and man of god in town, has been tasked by her father to teach her french. Perhaps she’ll teach him some french right back, if you know what I’m saying. Friends, family, lovers, and self discovery will shape the person that picked up the quill and wrote the timeless gothic classic Wuthering Heights. Bradly, Frank, Rose, and Melina hold their own book club and ponder the pages of the woman in comparison to the reels of the character, discuss the 1840’s in all its trappings and triumphs, and deliver some lessons in conjugation and pronunciation that Bradly so desperately needs.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. CREED III MOVIE REVIEW

Hard to believe that there are now actually nine films in the Rocky film franchise, even if Creed III counts as the first one that doesn’t actually have the character in the film (he is mentioned once). But Michael B. Jordan has decidedly made the boxing series his own with his heavyweight champion Adonis Creed, son of Rocky’s old nemesis and then friend, Apollo. But Adonis has proved himself and has settled comfortably into boxing retirement, at least from being in the ring. He manages a young boxer who is rocketing to the top himself, has a happy family life with his wife (Tessa Thompson) and young daughter. But messing up his equilibrium is an old friend who reappears. Damian was Adonis’ older friend who was himself on the fast-track to becoming a professional boxer but who got sent to prison for defending Adonis with a gun. Decades later, he hasn’t wasted any prison time going to seed and he comes out hungry to get back to where he left off. He comes to Adonis asking for a shot at the title. But Damian isn’t as clear-headed or as nice as he seems and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to be the king. Chris, Marco, Wright, and Alan spar in this review that was as fun to record as it sounds.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). MARLOWE MOVIE REVIEW

Studios need a hero to sell the pictures but those pictures need a mystery that’s tall and shaped like an hourglass containing enough sand to bury a treasure that the most dangerous crooks this side of the strip are after. Not all treasure is shines like gold; sometimes that treasure is information that could put you, me, and this whole filthy operation behind bars (bars of chocolate, which is a great treat to have with popcorn at a movie). And not just any kind of movie, a whodunnit! Who done this? It’s famous auteur writer/director Neil Jordan partnering up with long time collaborator and geriatric action star Liam Neeson. Taking up the mantel from a plethora of actors before him, Neeson stars as Marlowe in Marlowe, playing the famous private eye who’s been tasked to find the dead lover of a femme fatale named Mrs. Cavendish (Diane Kruger). Identities are mistaken, guns are smoking, dialogue is hard boiled and cynical, and the cast of usual suspects include Jessica Lange, Alan Cumming, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Bradly, Frank, and Melina discuss their relationship with Raymond Chandler’s legendary detective and the right and wrong ways to tell a caper. Was the trio taken by Liam Neeson’s take on the tenacious gum shoe or did his 100th film give them all The Big Sleep?
