MAD HEIDI MOVIE REVIEW

Hey everyone. I don’t know if you heard… here, come in closer, I don’t want anyone else to pick up on our intimate conversation. Listen… you know Heidi? Yeah, well some assholes killed her boyfriend Goat Peter, burned down her house with her grandfather still inside. Well that just boiled Heidi’s blood. She’s mad. You could say that she’s… Mad Heidi. Nice. I’m glad we got through that, you and I, together. That was an easy and awkward setup to an equally awkward movie. Mad Heidi is a Grindhouse at heart, crowdfunded online, and born of Swiss Cheese (and filmmakers). T.C. Lewayne, Editor Mike, and Chad finally crack the code on what makes a Grindhouse good. Spoiler alert, it’s not this movie.

T.C. De Witt (Screener Squad)

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). FLAMIN’ HOT MOVIE REVIEW

Do as Nelly says with today’s film everyone: “It’s getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes.”

Wait… scratch that. Put your Chester Cheeto shirt back on. Nobody wants to see that. Anyways, today’s film is Flamin’ Hot directed by Eva Longoria (yes that Eva Longoria). It’s the story of Richard Montañez, a janitor at Frito Lay who changed the snack landscape forever… It’s a pretty good story, a little predictable with a forced corporate perspective. That being said, this is a really good watch. Join Jordan, Editor Mike, and Chad for this flamin’ hot review… See what I did there?

AMERICAN BORN CHINESE REVIEW

Long long ago in a galaxy that can be referred to as our very own, the greatest classic Chinese novels were written. Journey to the West, attributed to author Wu Cheng’en is about the pilgrimage of the Tang Dynasty’s Buddhist monk Xuanzang and his travel to the western regions from Central Asia to India to obtain the Buddhist sutras. This Disney+ series American Born Chinese is not the story of the monk but rather his his protector’s life after the pilgrimage has concluded. Thousands of years have passed and former bodyguard Sun Wukong (Daniel Wu) the Monkey King and current reigning great sage of the heavens has his inner peace disrupted when his iron staff is stolen by his only son Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu). Falling from heaven to the earth realm, Wei Chen believes a high school harbours a guide that will help him in his quest to find a mysterious fourth scroll that will stop the uprising against heaven led by the Bull King. That guide is Jin Wang (Ben Wang) an insecure high school soccer player who just wants to fit in, hang out with his chemistry partner Amelia (Sydney Taylor) and explore some biology, and lastly hide away from his parents Christine (Yeo Yann Yann) and Simon’s (Chin Han) constant bickering. Created for television by Kelvin Yu and based on the renowned comic book writer Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel, American Born Chinese tells the story of an ancient important quest and how it all really relates to the discovery of inner peace when dealing with the horrors of high school politics. Bradly and Harmoni hold a pep rally and praise the coming of age awkwardness in a time of social media and memes while Eliot and Kim discuss discuss the excellence of the marketing team pushing Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan as the leads in a story that’s actually about a teenage dirtbag’s baby. Together the four take their own pilgrimage into the adaptation conversation and how not knowing the text could riddle the journey in convoluted obstacles.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Eliot Nelson (Screener Squad, Staff Writer)

Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. YELLOWJACKETS SEASON 2 REVIEW

BUZZ, BUZZ everybody! After a stellar first season that came outta nowhere, Showtime’s mega smash hit Yellowjackets returns for its much anticipated second season. Following the exploits of a high school girl’s soccer team that crashed in the Canadian wilderness in 1996 to a national tournament and were stranded for nineteen months, this season sees our girls (and the few men left) dealing with the harsh bitterness of winter as food becomes scarce, tensions and hunger rise, a weird cult is forming around one of the girls, and one of them has a baby on the way. Oh, and the devolving into cannibalism too. Meanwhile, back in the present day, many of their adult counterparts aren’t doing much better since they now deal with grown-up problems like covering up the murder of one’s extramarital lover, a fugue state dormant personality, more cults, and nosy daughters. Needless to say, this season has a lot going on. So it’s a good thing Rose, Sarah Jane, Jordan, and Neil are here to tell you if they and the wilderness are happy with how the sophomore season shaped out.

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

THE BLACKENING MOVIE REVIEW

The tag line for this new horror comedy reads “They can’t all die first”. Because it’s a (largely) all-black cast and the trope is that the black people always die first. Just in case you were out of the 30-year old oft-repeated loop. This is the tone for a new horror comedy by director Tim Story (Barbershop). A group of former school friends have a reunion at a cabin out in the woods. And yes, the characters almost immediately comment on why would black people choose to do this in a cabin in the woods in the middle of nowhere. It’s not long before a creepy and racist board game is discovered that a masked killer is forcing them to play, else they begin to be killed. Hijinks ensue as they are forced to confront their own ‘blackness’ in order to survive. Chris, Kim, Wright, and Alan take on The Blackening and are as surprised as anyone that Tim Story made a movie that might end up being a new classic of the genre.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). ELEMENTAL MOVIE REVIEW

Disney/Pixar’s latest animated feature is Elemental, the story of a world populated by anthropomorphized elemental beings, either Fire, Earth, Water, or Air. The film follows the Lumen family, immigrants to Element City where fire beings are rare (understandably because of their nature to set fire to everything around them). Raising a family, a business, and eventually being the heart of an entire district isn’t easy but the Lumens manage to create a community around them. The daughter of the family, Ember has a bit of a temper problem, which is the one thing making her aging father uncomfortable about handing the shop over to her. Her temper leads to a broken water pipe in the basement and then a water inspector who could shut everything down. She finds that she’s ready to do anything to stop it from happening, and eventually keep anyone from finding out what happened at all. Not just that she lost her temper again, but that she and the inspector Wade seem to have a friendship and more quickly blooming. Chris, Wright, Tessa, and Beau take on this animated film and decide if it’s on fire or all wet.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Beau Paul is an Austin native, an actor, and a writer. Sometimes all at once! THE FLASH MOVIE REVIEW

In what may or may not be the last gasps of DC’s Snyder-verse (it’s always too soon to call what Warner Brothers is gonna actually do until you see it happening in a movie theater), Ezra Miller returns as the Scarlet Speedster, the Flash. This time around he is sad, remembering his childhood and the random murder of his mother that was pinned on his father, even though Barry is certain his dad is innocent. Accidentally discovering extreme speeds can let him travel through time, he makes his way to that fatal day and prevents his mother from ever dying. Unfortunately for Barry, when he tries to come back, an alternate speedster also in the ‘time-force’ knocks him out into an alternate 2013, created by his change. Now he must deal with his younger self (who hasn’t yet gotten his powers but surprise: this is the day it WOULD have happened if he had entered the police department), and find Superman, who doesn’t seem to have surfaced in this version of the world, but somebody better step up because General Zod is wreaking havoc. Chris, Editor Mike, and Wright get on the cosmic treadmill to decide whether this is one of the most fun DC efforts in years, or a lazy nostalgia-chewing throwback with CG from 25 years ago.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). THE MARVELOUS MRS MAISEL SEASON 5 REVIEW

Midge Maisel is back for her final set in the last season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. As we left her in season 4, Rachel Brosnahan’s Midge found herself at a crossroads yet again trying to figure out with her manager Susie, played by Alex Borstein, what their next step should be. Which leads them to a writing gig on the Gordon Ford Show. This last season brings back all of our favorite characters: from Midge’s parents, played by the hysterical Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle, as well as Midge’s ex Joel, Michael Zegen, and his parents, played by Kevin Pollak and Caroline Aaron. The series still keeps the razor sharp dialogue on point led by Amy Sherman-Palladino as well as the wonderful set and costume design. Does Midge stick the landing and finally make it? Listen as Wright, Melina, Rose, and Dogget discuss Midge Maisel’s last chance at success.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Rose Mattox (Screener Squad)

Originally hailing from Austin then Houston, Rose has been an avid movie and TV fanatic pretty much since birth. She spends spending her days watching Star Trek reruns, 60’s spy fiction, and Audrey Hepburn movies with her beloved minion (see: dog Riley). She also occasionally dabbles in comedy, screenwriting, as well as graphic and interior design. Rose has been contributing to One of Us since 2019 as a member of the Screener Squad, as well as making regular appearances on Eye on the Prize during awards season. WHITE HOUSE PLUMBERS SERIES REVIEW

The Watergate scandal back in the early 70s led to the resignation of president Richard Nixon. Are you under 30? You probably recognize that president from Futurama as portrayed by Billy West. Turn off that cartoon and dive into some historical dramatic comedy. The former CIA agent and current author Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) is living in disgrace in the backlash of the Panama papers. Working for president Nixon is his one last chance at a patriotic legacy. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), a former FBI agent and living embodiment of the American Dad is Hunt’s co-conspirator. Together they are the White House Plumbers. Their prime objective is to identify leaks that threaten national security, which had them undertaking nefarious activities under the direction of Nixon such as conspiracy, burglary, and breaking into hotels to wire tap all the phones. As if espionage wasn’t enough, Hunt and Liddy both have family lives to juggle. Dorothy Hunt (Lena Headey) wants to know why the long hours and low pay while Fran Liddy (Judy Greer) doesn’t really know or ask what her spouse does for a living. Creators Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck (Veep) inject their stranger than fiction humour into what was once one of the biggest presidential scandals in US history. Bradly leads an investigation with Eliot, Frank, and Sarah Jane filing through the careers of Theroux, Harrelson, and Heady, compare the real life events to the ensemble of comedic legends, and discover that nothing is off the table when it comes to board game adaptations.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Eliot Nelson (Screener Squad, Staff Writer)

Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible. His favorite movies include The Lord of the Rings, City of God, Dawn of the Dead, and Groundhog Day. When not rambling to himself about the ineptness of entertainment executives, Eliot posts infrequently on Twitter and squawks regularly on his podcast The Debasement Tapes.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive.
