Matt Frank (Giganticast, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Matt Frank is known in both Japan and America as the “Kaiju King,” having been an artist for IDW’s Godzilla comics since 2011. His work can be found in Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, Godzilla: History’s Greatest Monster, Godzilla: Legends, Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, and the critically praised Godzilla: Rage Across Time. Matt is also an accomplished Transformers artist, working extensively for both IDW and Fub Publications, as an interior artist and a character designer. Mars Attacks The Transformers and Spotlight: Trailcutter are among his most popular works, and he created four new Transformers characters, the Raptoricons, for the Official Collector’s Club in 2016. In the summer of 2017, Matt made an exclusive poster celebrating the American home video release of Shin Godzilla by Funimation, and is also a featured commentator on the blu-ray special features. He has also contributed covers for Go Go Power Rangers, My Little Pony, and Mars Attacks. GOLDA MOVIE REVIEW

Golda Meir was the Israeli prime minister from 1969 to 1974. During her service she made life or death decisions that would label her as a bloodthirsty tyrant to some and the Iron Lady Israel doing what’s best for her country by others. The film about her is directed by Guy Nattiv and written by Nicholas Martin and stars Helen Mirren as Golda Meir. It recounts her time as prime minister during the Yom Kippur War. The 1973 armed conflict was fought from October 6th to the 25th in 1973, between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria. The majority of combat between the two sides took place in the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights, both of which were occupied by Israel in 1967, with some fighting in African Egypt and northern Israel. Egypt’s initial objective in the war was to seize a foothold on the eastern bank of the Suez Canal and subsequently leverage these gains to negotiate the return of the rest of the Israeli occupied Sinai Peninsula. In the film, Golda explains to a commission the decisions she made during the conflict and we as an audience bear witness to the horrors of war. Bradly, Frank, TC, and Eliot share their unique perspectives on the war and dissect the critic’s perspective when it comes to a biopic through the limited lens of its protagonist. Then some outrageous claims are made about the stunning Helen Mirren herself and her acting choices while portraying Golda Meir.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. BAD THINGS MOVIE REVIEW

Bad Things is a “Shinning” example of what not to do if you like the movie The Shining. Imagine a movie where Jack Torrence doesn’t get a character setup, we don’t find out about his abusive past, and we just show up at The Overlook Hotel. It’s not that compelling of a story then. Bad Things strives to be what its predecessor was, it just falls flat. We have 4 friends staying at a defunct, probably haunted, hotel. Because of the lack of character development, when shit starts to go down, it doesn’t affect the viewer. There are a few moments of genuine horror, only to be surrounded by more convoluted plot details. The actors are great, but again, the source material doesn’t do any of them justice. But since Jordan, Lewayne, and Chad had to sit through this slog, maybe you should too?

THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES SEASON 3 REVIEW

Everyone’s favorite dysfunctional, evangelical, family is back here to separate you from your disposable income… you know… for Jesus or something. This season, the siblings (Danny McBride, Adam DeVine, Edi Patterson) are at odds over running the kingdom now that dad (John Goodman) has “retired.” We’re also introduced to the Montgomery family: a sect of Eli’s family that is, shall we say, more militant christian than prosperity gospel, with Steve Zahn and Kristen Johnston added to the cast. To be honest, this review receives two extra points for the casting decisions. This season is a hoot and has a monster truck called “The Redeemer” with its own theme song and everything. Sit down with Mike, Dogget, Ryan, and Chad as they commiserate on their religious upbringings.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 327: DOUBLECROSS!

Chris and Wright get up to shenanigans while they review this giant stack of home release. Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). THE INVENTOR MOVIE REVIEW

And if legends are to be believed, he was the architect and designer of the entire city of Venice. He believed that if built as he envisioned it, the city would be the New Rome. And this is where the new stop motion animated film The Inventor takes us. The insatiably curious Leonardo da Vinci (Stephen Fry) leaves Italy to join the French court, where he can experiment freely, invent incredible machines and study the human body. He is joined on his adventure by the audacious French princess Marguerite de Nevarre (Daisy Ridley). DARK WINDOWS MOVIE REVIEW

Tracy Chapman once asked do you got a fast car in a great song about an impoverished woman trying to break the cycle of poverty set to folk rock. Bradly Martin is asking, why not call an uber if you’re drunk? Do not drink and drive and do not get into a drunk driver’s automobile. Dark Windows directed by Alex Herron and written by Ulvrik Kraft is about four friends at a funeral. Three of them are alive and one of them is dead. Tilly (Anna Bullard) Monica (Annie Hamilton) and Peter (Rory Alexander) are mourning the loss of their friend Alison (Grace Binford Sheene) because of a tragic car accident with a drunk behind the wheel and a car prank gone wrong. The trio know they will never be able to bury their guilt under the judgmental gaze for Alison’s family. They decide to hold their own personal memorial for Ali at a summer cabin in the woods, surrounded by forest, with no cell phone service, and lots of booze. Each friend slowly comes undone by the haunting guilt getting the best of them, or maybe something more rational is out there in the woods… with a knife! Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

BIRTH/REBIRTH MOVIE REVIEW

Do you like undead children, zombie pigs, and Mini-DV tapes? Well you’re in luck! Birth/Rebirth is Laura Moss’ directorial debut with a chilling and unnerving story about the lengths that a mother would go through for her child. Judy Reyes stars as Celie, an overworked RN, whose daughter Lila, played by A.J. Lister, tragically dies. Once Lila’s body arrives at the morgue, the unsetting technician, played wonderfully creepy by Marin Ireland, takes the body for further experiments in bringing the dead back to life. These two characters band together to not only keep the young girl alive but to break scientific ground on creating eternal life. What could go wrong?! Wright, Jordan, and T.C. discuss this Frankenstein-ish flick and wonder if it’s dead on arrival or bursting with life.

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. STRANGE NEW WORLDS SEASON 2 REVIEW

The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues our five year mission with Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the starship Enterprise in the 23rd century, a decade before Star Trek: The Original Series. This season offers some fantastic looks at some truly classic scenarios: A trial episode, a time travel episode, an away mission gone wrong, memory loss, Spock dealing with his humanity, and Klingon bastards. And two entries into the Trek library that may be All-Timers: a crossover with the animated Star Trek Lower Decks and a musical episode that has dethroned Buffy’s Once More With Feeling (go ahead and fight about that in the comments). Sarah Jane, Eliot, Dogget, and T.C. gather in the One Of Us Ten-Forward with their phasers set decidedly to stunning and ready to pile endless praise on this outstanding show. Oh! And the Squad also has a pitch for season three that involves a whole lot of kissing.

GRAN TURISMO MOVIE REVIEW

What gamer hasn’t had a fantasy that they got to live their games for real? Even you apocalyptic gamers; I see you imagining how fun the end of the world would be. And yet, these are just fantasies. But not for young Jann (Archie Madekwe) who was SO good at the exacting racing simulator game Gran Turismo that he was selected by Sony and Nissan along with a handful of other champions, to compete to become an actual pro racer. Yes, this actually happened. A few times. Not exactly how this new movie portrays it, of course. Director Neill Blomkamp brings the zoom to this admittedly adrenaline-packed film (when they’re in the cars anyway). David Harbor is the gruff old racer who becomes a surrogate father-figure to Jann as he trains him. Djimon Hounsou is Jann’s actual father who just can’t understand what he loves so much about playing the game. Orlando Bloom is…largely irrelevant. Chris, Marco, and Spider-Mike found this to be an overly trope-laden underdog sports story with some real groan-worthy moments, but some solid performances from Harbor and Hounsou and some racing cinematography that is about as good as anyone’s ever done it. Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked.
