INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY MOVIE REVIEW

One last time to strap on the whip and put on the hat…here we go. Certainly the last Indiana Jones outing did not exactly meet with the world’s universal pleasure and Harrison Ford has been pushing ever since to get one more go-round. It’s still a little baffling it took this long (the man is 80) and Spielberg is no longer directing and Lucas no longer writing but The Dial of Destiny is in the can. This time around, it’s 1969, Jones is about to retire from his teaching job that no one seems to care about anymore. Man has just landed on the moon and looking backwards in exploration isn’t something the young folks care about anymore. But then, a figure from his past, his long-estranged god-daughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) shows up to ultimately steal from him one half of an ancient relic he’s been keeping hidden for decades, Archimedes’ Dial. Her father believed it held the power to exploit fissures in time so of course there are Nazis after it. In this case, Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen), a Operation Paperclip former Nazi that wants to find both halves and go back to change the course of WWII. Well, no amount of years or mileage is gonna keep Indy from trying to stop Nazis and he’s off on another rip-roaring adventure only this time with considerably more deep-fake to keep Ford from dying while playing the part. Chris, Ben, Spider-Mike, and Marco take up the challenge of reviewing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny with all but no spoilers and place it in a museum where it belongs.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. THE FULL MONTY SERIES REVIEW

Back in 1997 a film from across the pond debuted in the states from director Peter Cattaneo and writer Simon Beaufoy about six recently sacked steel workers who come together to perform a male stripper act. A quarter century later FX/Hulu presents The Full Monty: The TV series. Gaz (Robert Carlyle) is still the same old plotter but is now the wayward father of a teenage daughter Destiny (Talitha King). She’s a free-spirited troublemaker with a heart full of music sung with a voice of rebellion. Dave (Mark Addy), the maintenance engineer at the highschool run by his wife Jean (Lesley Sharp), are both are trying to keep the building and their marriage from falling apart. Horse (Paul Barger) is surviving in the failed to level up era of selfish old England while Gerald (Tom Wilkinson) is mostly keeping to himself. The One Of Us crew of Bradly, Sarah, and Melina discuss the reunion of the old cast and the arrival of the new, how necessary a revival is of a 25 year old story that had a banger conclusion, and discuss the british method of telling dramatic stories through satirical comedic lenses.

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

EXTRACTION 2 MOVIE REVIEW

Two brothers forged in streets running red with the blood of their people pitted against each other in civil war. Their life purpose? Burn down the house of freedom and flip it for tyrannical profit! When the leaves of oppression fall on the yard of peace, don’t reach for the hammer. Grab a Rake! Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake, the balls-to-the-wall, face-punching, head-shooting, Netflix action hero in Extraction 2. When we last saw Tyler he was riddled with bullets and questioning his survival. It’ll take more than a body of water to keep this hot body down. Recovering from a coma and cane in hand, Tyler is approached by a mysterious man offering him a job and a purpose: extract a mother of two from fortress prison in the mountains of Russia. With his old team mates Yaz (Adam Bessa) and Nik (Golshifteh Farahani). Tyler will accept the mission and the bad guys will meet their fate in expertly crafted fight choreography and action set pieces from the stunt master of mayhem Sam Hargrave. Bradly, Dogget, and Jena discuss the political boiling pot of oppressed people living in a oligarch and what means they have to rise up against oppression waiting for the next power vacuum, then stop that discussion when they realize this is just a fun action summer blockbuster. BARRY SEASON 4 REVIEW

Well everyone, as they say in the world of theater, the final curtain has fallen on the beloved HBO series…pause for dramatic effect…Barry. That’s right, the show has officially concluded with it its fourth season and HOLY FREAKING DAVE AND BUSTER’S if we nerds at Oneofus.net haven’t been busting at the seams to talk all about it! This season begins with everyone’s favorite hitman Barry Berkman locked in the clink and awaiting judgment for his several crimes. Feeling betrayed by his mentor Gene Cousineau and discarded by his girlfriend Sally, Barry finds refuge in his former partner Fuches, who also now finds himself behind bars. Meanwhile, Cusineau half-heartedly staves off the press (as well as his own ego) for his role in Barry’s capture, Sally heads for home after her career-ending public meltdown (among other unfortunate events), and crime cohorts/devoted lovers No Ho Hank and Cristobal seek to establish a new business enterprise while avoiding a vengeful Chechan mob. Sound like a lot? Well, strap on in because that’s just the first half-hour of one of the most intense, surreal and existential roller coasters you’ll ever ride. With this final season, Bill Hader and Alec Berg have written a perfect swan song for a show that’s had us all laughing…and unable to sleep…since its inception. It’s gorgeously shot, astonishingly written, wonderfully funny and beautifully bleak; all aspects we fans have come to expect but still walk away from every episode mesmerized by. Safe to say that we were fans of Barry’s final season? Yeah, probably. Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 323: HOW TO SEXY DANCE LIKE A COCAINE ASSASSIN

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can)

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

NO HARD FEELINGS MOVIE REVIEW

Jennifer Lawrence plays Maddie, a woman scrambling to scrape together the money to save her house in beach town Montauk, NY. When her car is repossessed, she can no longer drive rideshare to make her goals and desperation sets in. The kind of desperation that has one take really bad deals. Like one from a local wealthy couple who want to give her a new car in exchange for her seducing their 19 year old son. Only thing is, Maddie didn’t count on this virgin kid actually wanting to take things slow. Really slow. While I think we are were a lot skeptical of any heterosexual 19 year old kid not saying yes to jumping in bed immediately with a welcoming Jennifer Lawrence, we thought that No Hard Feelings still had a good amount to recommend about it. Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. ASTEROID CITY MOVIE REVIEW

Wes Anderson’s latest star-studded symmetrical and stoic comedy is a nesting doll of a tale. A Rod Serling-ish Bryan Cranston narrates the story of the making of a play called “Asteroid City”, all of this presented in black and white. The play itself is presented in color and as if it was really happening. Its tale is one of a gathering of young “Junior Stargazers” in a small town named for the huge asteroid crater near it. As the extended families of the brilliant young minds intersect along with some oddball locals, new stories unwind but everything is put on hold when something strange descends from the sky during their awards ceremony in the crater. How much will this change the way they view their worlds? Will the audience understand what the hell is going on with the ending? MAD HEIDI MOVIE REVIEW

Hey everyone. I don’t know if you heard… here, come in closer, I don’t want anyone else to pick up on our intimate conversation. Listen… you know Heidi? Yeah, well some assholes killed her boyfriend Goat Peter, burned down her house with her grandfather still inside. Well that just boiled Heidi’s blood. She’s mad. You could say that she’s… Mad Heidi. Nice. I’m glad we got through that, you and I, together. That was an easy and awkward setup to an equally awkward movie. Mad Heidi is a Grindhouse at heart, crowdfunded online, and born of Swiss Cheese (and filmmakers). T.C. Lewayne, Editor Mike, and Chad finally crack the code on what makes a Grindhouse good. Spoiler alert, it’s not this movie.

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country.
