SPOOKTACULAR! MOVIE REVIEW

This new documentary Spooktacular! is perfect for Fantastic Fest as it concerns the rise and fall of the first Horror Theme Park (which is a bit of a semantic stretch, but ok). Spooky World started as just a haunted hayride that was putting in considerably more effort than most, and ended up expanding to a horror museum, a wax museum, multiple haunts, scaryoke, and more with big horror celebrities like Alice Cooper, Kane Hodder, and Tom Savini getting involved. Of course, you know what they say about ‘all good things’ and eventually its time ran out but its legacy is far-reaching and on display across the world every October. THE ALTMAN METHOD MOVIE REVIEW

Noa and Uri are a married couple living in Israel and things are starting to get tough. It looks like Uri is going to have to shut down his martial arts school as the students have stopped signing up and Noa isn’t getting the acting parts she used to. When one day Uri fends off an attack from a Palestinian woman who does cleaning in their apartment building, the press makes him into a hero and his school suddenly is booming with new students. All appears to be going right for them but Noa can tell something is off about this attack. Chris and Wright didn’t feel the same about this one but both agree that Maayan Weinstock who plays Noa is a real find and that The Altman Method has some interesting things to say. THE UNCLE MOVIE REVIEW

It’s the 1980s in Yugoslavia and for this father, mother, and teenage(?) boy, Christmas day is very important. It’s when their Uncle comes to visit and spend the holiday with them. A big turkey dinner, presents, dancing, and singing will follow. So why does it all seem to hollow and forced? And why, the very next day, does the family wake up and prepare to do Christmas day with their Uncle all over again? Thus is the premise of the Croatian film The Uncle that Chris and Wright saw at Fantastic Fest. And this isn’t some sort of supernatural event of days repeating; something is going on with the Uncle that forces the family to do this ad nauseam. What power could he possibly hold over them and why do this? We won’t answer those questions in our Infestation review but we will tell you how good this film is.

WHAT YOU WISH FOR MOVIE REVIEW

It’s rare a Fantastic Fest goes by that we don’t get some extreme film that has food at the center of it. This year that award goes to What You Wish For. Nick Stahl plays Ryan, a talented chef but one with such a bad gambling problem that he’s on the run from murderous collectors. Showing up for presumably just a ‘friendly visit’ to an old culinary school chum in Latin America, he finds himself in a position to take his friend’s place as a chef to some very rich folks soon to visit the beautiful house he stays at. But Ryan has no idea what he’s actually in for and if it’s even possible to get out of what would be an impossible situation for, I’d hope, most people. Chris and Wright fully declare What You Wish For one of the best of the fest and hope you all get a chance to see it for yourselves soon, but in the meantime, check out their review.

THE ORIGIN MOVIE REVIEW

Horror directors are always in search of a new twist on the genre and it’s gotten to the point that we’ve come down to animatronic characters coming to life and angry sorority sloths as the offerings this year. But Fantastic Fest presents a new way of delivering the thrills with a fascinating trip to 45,000 years ago with The Origin. A group of stone-age nomads out of desperation have come across the sea to a mysterious and barren new land, hoping to find some food and a home. Unfortunately, they appear to have only discovered something which is picking them off one by one in the dark. Both gorgeously shot and very scary, The Origin hit all the right notes for Chris and Wright. Listen to their review!

SLEEP MOVIE REVIEW

While Wright and Chris could certainly use some sleep at this point of Fantastic Fest, this review is about a new Korean movie with that title. Hyun-su (Lee Sun-kyun previously in Parasite) has been sleepwalking and talking of late. This does not exactly excite his wife, new mother Soo-jin (Jung Yu-mi previously of Train to Busan) who needs her own sleep badly and boy, does Hyun-su do some creepy stuff when he’s unconsciously walking around the house. Like put their dog in the freezer. Naturally Soo-jin is worried for their child and is willing to believe almost anything to fix the situation…which is where they get in real trouble. VISITORS (COMPLETE EDITION) MOVIE REVIEW

Expanded from director Ken’ichi Ugana’s short, Visitors is the sort of crazed affair that some folks come to Fantastic Fest specifically for: wacky Japanese surreal comedy mixed with genre. In this case, picture Raimi’s original Evil Dead only as this type of madness. The story, such as it is, follows a group of young people who are visiting an old friend who seems to have retreated entirely to his home, and something is wrong with him. Soon, folks are getting transformed into this film’s weirdly adorable version of deadites and before you know it, we seem to be in a different story about a musician who has been abducted by sources unknown. These tales fuse and we are treated to monster vomit tea parties, intestines jump rope games, and demons with chainsaws for arms. While completely absurd, Visitors has a lot of bizarre charm and Chris and Wright were into it. Check out their review here.

OUTLAW JOHNNY BLACK MOVIE REVIEW

In 2009, Michael Jai White gave cinema one of the best homages and genre sendups of all-time with Black Dynamite. It wasn’t just a great comedy, it was an outstanding film, which at every step was elevated by the committed performance (and jacked physique) of co-writer and lead Michael Jai White. White is a dedicated martial artist, and he brought that energy to the ass-kicking and booty-getting Black Dynamite. Fans have been waiting 14 years for Michael to offer up another parody action comedy, and that day has come with Outlaw Johnny Black. Hell bent on avenging the death of his father, Johnny Black vows to gun down Brett Clayton and becomes a wanted man in the process while posing as a preacher in a small mining town that’s been taken over by a notorious land baron. Blending the spaghetti western and black western genres, with all their tropes and cliches, and watching the trailer for this insane flick, the hope is that MJW has brought cinephiles another asskicking action comedy. Spider-Mike, Ryan, and T.C. hit the open range and gather around the campfire to discuss whether or not this movie succeeds or fails.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. SLOTHERHOUSE MOVIE REVIEW

It feels like there’s a cavalcade of great horror premises out there… You’re sitting there, scrolling through a streaming platform and oh… look at this movie called “Cariboo?” The idea of a dead reindeer haunting a small town makes your soul jump for joy. Then you proceed to watch a 90 min schlock film that just has a bunch of actors running away from a poorly designed caribou… and alas… you’ve been tricked again. But there is hope. A movie has ascended from the heavens, and it’s name is Slotherhouse. Imagine Black Christmas but the killer is a a sloth named Alpha. She’s just been adopted by a sorority and decides to go on a murder rampage. The premise is ridiculous, but the cast and crew commit to it 1000%, so it ends up being a great movie. Don’t believe me, check in with Ryan, Lewayne, and Chad. They know what’s up.

INFESTATION: FANTASTIC FEST 2023 – THE LAST STOP IN YUMA COUNTY

Somewhere in between Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah seems to lie the director’s ambition for this new film The Last Stop in Yuma County. Featuring a veritable who’s who of actors who you’ve seen in many films but go, ‘yeah, who IS that?’ At least. unless you’re a Fantastic Fest regular, in which case you probably know most of them immediately, like Jim Cummings, Alex Essoe, Faizon Love, Richard Brake, Barbara Crampton, Jocelin Donahue, Gene Jones, and more. The story is of a bunch of weary travelers at the titular stop for gas and food who are stranded there because the fuel truck is running late. Enter two criminals who robbed a bank in a nearby city and are running on fumes, paranoia, and coffee. Before you know it, stand-offs are happening, blood is flowing, and SOMEBODY is gonna try to run off with the ill-gotten gains. Chris and Wright checked this one out so listen to what they had to say about it.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’.
