CORNER OFFICE MOVIE REVIEW

Pour a drip of hurt, clock in, cram yourself into a cubicle, and start living with purpose. After all, without the rat race and daily grind of nine to five we’d have all the free time in the world to love, laugh, cry, smile, hope, despair, and dream. Have ever seen a dreamer climb a corporate ladder? They all have their heads in the clouds but no ambition to elevate the bottom line. From Director Joachim Back and writers Ted Kupper and Jonas Karlsson comes the dark comedy about work family relationships and psychologically exhausted suits in ties. Orson (Jon Hamm) takes pride in his work and is very methodical about his plans to improve the overall output and success of the company he works for, The Authority. When the pressure of his inbox becomes too much, he takes solace in a serene corner office next to the elevators. There is just one problem that his colleagues keep reporting to HR. According to his co-workers. The office doesn’t exist. Co-Starring Danny Pudi, Bill Marchant, Allison Riley, and Sarah Gadon and an assortment of character actors. Corner Office is the kind of workplace drama that left Bradly, Chad, TC, and Eliot scratching their heads and cursing their corporate overlords.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

Eliot Nelson (Screener Squad, Staff Writer)

Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible. His favorite movies include The Lord of the Rings, City of God, Dawn of the Dead, and Groundhog Day. THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER MOVIE REVIEW

The script for The Last Voyage of the Demeter has been optioned and changed hands many times over the past 20 years. One can easily see why there was interest: take the never explored in film (that we could find) story of Dracula’s passage to London on the doomed ship Demeter and do it like Alien. One monster, lots of crewmembers in a dark and confined gothy space, being picked off one by one. Why it took this long is indeed a good question. But now it’s in the hands of a horror director with a strong track record, André Øvredal (Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe) and SOME of us were very excited for this one. SOME of us genuinely liked this one. Those that did in fact see all the good at play here also admit that there was stuff that could have gone better. Then there’s that hater. Well, I guess it’s good to hear different points of view. As long as you don’t listen to Wright here, and just trust Chris and Marco, you should be alright. In full disclosure, Wright did not write this intro.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). MEG 2: THE TRENCH MOVIE REVIEW

It’s hard not to feel bad for the Megs in this film. I mean, what chance do they, or anyone really, have versus Jason Statham? This time though he and his (surviving) team have to deal with an illegal mining operation at the bottom of The Trench (where the Megs live) who are ready to do whatever it takes to keep news of their surreptitious operations from getting back to the surface. This is all probably just so the audience doesn’t question too deeply WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYONE GO BACK TO WHERE THE MEGS LIVE? But it is Statham and they’re probably more scared of him than he is of them. Of course, it all eventually leads to carnage at ‘fun island’ which is what you came for. But BOY does it take awhile to get there. Listen to Chris, Wright, Eric, and Marco compare scars as they discuss Meg 2: The Trench.

THE BEANIE BUBBLE MOVIE REVIEW

It seems like Hollywood has a never ending barrage of “Company Biopics” it wants to melt our eyeballs with. Something that gently plucks a little nostalgia out of your brain, and gives you a fleeting moment from your past… all while being bombarded with messages of “American Dreams” and “Capitalism Baby!” By the end, you’re ready to drop some hard earned money on Flaming Hot Cheetos, some new Jordans, or a sweet (and totally state of the art) Blackberry phone. Today’s film recounts the story of how the company TY and it’s loyal customers made this weird aftermarket where Beanie Babies were being resold at an extraordinary markup. If you’re too young to know or remember, it was crazy. We were banned from bringing BB’s to school because some kids were trading high-valued stock for garbage, and parents were getting pissed. The movie is fine, but suffers from an identity issue. Stick around and let TC, Ryan, Mike, and Chad explain why this Beanie Bubble of a movie comes in flat.

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). SECRET INVASION SERIES REVIEW

Back in the time of Blockbuster Videos and grunge rock, a young Nick Fury teamed up with a woman from outer space and together they would thwart the evil efforts of the Kree and stop the genocide of the peaceful, shape-shifting, extra terrestrials known as Skrulls. Thirty years later, branches of the US government with highly classified information have exposed the conspiracy that these aliens do in fact exist and walk among us! But enough about the July 26, 2023 UFO hearing (EDITOR: The hearing in question is much ado about nothing, or once again, no proof). Disney Plus is proud to present the ongoing MCU series Secret Invasion starring Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury. Fury has returned to earth to deal with the Skrull invasion. His Skrull friend Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) has a daughter now named G’iah (Emilia Clarke) who has taken a liking to following an angry no nonsense Skrull named Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir). Nick Fury in the 90’s along with Carol Danvers had promised the wayward Skrulls that if they fought to protect earth, then he and Carol would fight to find them a new planet. No planet has been found and Gravik is tired of waiting. Through global threats and espionage he plans to lure Fury into a confrontation and monologue his plan of world domination. Fury with the help of Talos, an MI6 agent named Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman), and love interest Priscilla (Charlayne Woodard) will come together to see through the lies and discover the truth behind the Secret Invasion. Bradly, Jordan, and Sarah Jane put on their tin foil hats and discuss the comic this is based upon, marvel at the chewing of scenery by the A list cast, and confirm through Rhodey (Don Cheadle) dialogue that the WWE is in fact Marvel Canon.

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. TALK TO ME MOVIE REVIEW

The A24 production logo on this new horror movie should give you a sense of the quality and craft you can expect. And coming from the YouTube twins Danny and Michael Philippou, you can also expect a certain level of twisted quality. These two are perfect choices to tell a story about an online trend that goes too far. The premise centers on a social media-driven frenzy of spiritual possession, triggered by grasping a ceramic-encased severed hand adorned with names and enigmatic symbols representing its previous owners. Aussie teens Mia, Jade, and Jade’s younger brother Riley find themselves drawn into this deadly game, granting them 90 seconds of interaction with the spirits of the deceased. However, when the spirits are unleashed, the teens undergo a haunting transformation, with their pupils turning deep black, and their bodies wracked by shivers and asphyxiation, as if teetering on the edge of death. Amidst the macabre spectacle, their giddy friends eagerly document these chilling encounters. Ya know, like Tide Pods, but with demons, or the Kiki Challenge, but with less Drake. THEATER CAMP MOVIE REVIEW

If you’re a theater kid, raised on a healthy dose of show tunes, spirit gum, musty stages, polite applause from audiences of mostly family, and plenty of delusions of grandeur that your high school production of Sweeney Todd is pretty much as good as the one in New York, then we’ve got a movie for you. But don’t take this to mean that Theater Camp is truly mocking the lovable dreamers who have set their hearts on a life on the stage. On the contrary, this is a love letter to all the oddballs and square pegs who give it their all, even if they’re working with cardboard and costumes from Goodwill. This movie is in the tradition of Waiting For Guffman and Drop Dead Gorgeous. It comes from a very genuine place. As summer rolls around again, kids are gathering from all over to attend Adirond ACTS, a scrappy theater camp in upstate New York that’s a haven for budding performers and Broadway bound kids. After its indomitable founder Joan (Amy Sedaris) falls ill, her clueless “crypto-bro” son Troy (Jimmy Tatro of American Vandal) is tasked with keeping the thespian paradise running. With financial ruin looming, Troy must join forces with Amos (Ben Platt), Rebecca-Diane (Molly Gordon), and their band of eccentric teachers to come up with a solution before the curtain rises on opening night. Melina, Bradly, and T.C. gather in the One Of Us theater space to discuss their connections to the thespian life and what makes Theater Camp a wonderful viewing for anyone who’s ever dreamed the impossible dream.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM

Believe it or not, there are other films opening this summer that aren’t named Barbie or Oppenheimer and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is just one of them. Even if you’ve never seen a TMNT property, you probably already know the basic set-up: a mysterious green ooze released into the sewer turns four turtles into humanoid mutants who grow up to be teenaged martial artists. I mean, it’s right there in the title, folks. With the help of a star studded voice cast and a unique animation style, stoner comedy gurus Seth Rogen and Adam Greenberg try to revive the franchise by emphasizing the teen aspects of the story. Like any bored, hormonal 15 year olds, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello are eager to get out of the house and experience the outside world for themselves, even if it goes against the wishes of their adoptive father Splinter (Jackie Chan) a mutated rat who hates and distrusts humans. When the turtles come to the aid of human teenager and budding journalist April O’Neil (Ayo Edebiri), she offers to help them gain acceptance by documenting their heroic deeds. Now the boys just need to find some heroic deeds to perform – like stopping master criminal SuperFly (Ice Cube) and his gang of mutants. Our own team of mutated renaissance men Mike the Editor, Spider-Mike, Nathan, and Marco sat down to discuss whether you should shell out money for this latest iteration of TMNT or just flush it down the toilet.

Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. THE WITCHER SEASON 3 REVIEW

We’ve come to expect a lot from the world of The Witcher, like secrets, swords, spells, songs, and sexy times. What could go wrong with such a time honored formula in season 3 of Netflix’s adaptation? Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Matt Foster (Screener Squad)

Matt Foster is a stand up comic, podcaster, and movie critic currently living in the greater Salt Lake City area. His lifelong love of genre film began early, when he realized they freaked out his mom.
