57 SECONDS MOVIE REVIEW

Time loop movies have been a recurring and popular subgenre in modern cinema for ages. Maybe even longer, if you’re living in some sort of time loop yourself. These films typically involve a character or group of characters being trapped or forced to relive a specific period of time over and over again. There are some truly excellent entries in this genre. You’ve got Run Lola Run, Triangle, Source Code, Edge of Tomorrow, and Happy Death Day, and of course the GOAT, Groundhog Day. When coming into this playground, you’ve gotta impress or be buried. And seeing as 57 Seconds is pretty much impossible to find streaming anywhere, it might be fair to say it’s gotten itself buried. Kim, Mindy, and T.C. set their watches to discuss this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it release about a tech blogger named Franklin (Hutcherson) who unleashes the power of a time-altering device that allows him to rewrite the past and seek revenge against the ruthless corporate empire that destroyed his family. However, his actions soon trigger a terrifying chain of events, propelling him into a pulse-pounding battle for survival where every second counts.

Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Mindy Rast-Keenan (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

NANDOR FODOR AND THE TALKING MONGOOSE

For all the famed historical figures who’ve seen biopics made of their lives and times, it’s always a pleasure to discover a lesser known individual of significance who’s been little more than a footnote in world history. Such is the case of Nandor Fodor and his experience with the famed Dalby Spook on the Isle of Man. Nandor Fodor was a Hungarian-born parapsychologist and author known for his research and writings on paranormal phenomena. Fodor was a prominent figure in the field of parapsychology during the mid-20th century and is perhaps best known for his involvement in the case of the talking mongoose, the subject of this new film. This case revolved around the Irving family, who claimed to have a bizarre and supernatural experience on the Isle of Man during the early 1930s. The Irving family, consisting of James, Margaret, and their daughter Voirrey, reported that they were living with a talking mongoose named “Gef.” Nandor (Simon Pegg), joined by his assistant Annie (Minnie Driver), being the preeminent para-psychologist of the era, began his investigation of this strange occurrence on the Isle of Man with certainty of it all being a hoax, but what happens when he is unable to disprove the mysterious Gef’s powers? Lewayne, Chad, Ryan, and T.C. attempted to con Chris into sending them to the Isle of Man to unlock the mystery of Gef themselves, but alas, they were only able to get into the studio for this review.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. FAIR PLAY MOVIE REVIEW

Writer/Director Chloe Domont presents a Netflix original feature Fair Play. Two young and sexy co-workers are putting the fun in hedge fund as they embark on a secret kinky relationship together. Luke (Alden Ehrenreich) is a scrappy young go-getter who’s been looking up to his boss Campbell (Eddie Marsan) since he heard the man speak of success and how to grab it by the stock portfolios. Emily (Phoebe Dynevor) not having time for big boy platitudes is actually quite good at her job and all the necessary know-how and risk management a cut throat financial needs to thrive. Luke proposes to Emily the night before a big promotion is announced. Luke is shaken to his alpha male core upon hearing that the promotion he thought was all but guaranteed to him has been given to someone else: Emily! Their relationship is put to the test as Luke falls deeper into a pit of self pity and flacid afternoons while Emily continues to climb the corporate ladder. As Emily rises she can’t help but notice Luke shrinking into the tiny little man he always was. Bradly, Kim, Dogget, and Nate discuss the comeback of the erotic thriller, ponder the fine line a cast must walk when sex, consent, kink, and shame are the paints used when stroking the brush, and together consider the ins and outs and ins and outs and ins again of secret relationship work place dramas.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 329: TO LIVE AND TO FORGET TO POST AN EPISODE

Chris and Wright have a stack filled with all kinds of stuff this week. From one of the goriest horror movies ever to come out of Italy (and that’s saying something), to a couple different L.A. Noir films that definitely require discussing and comparing. From Tom Skerritt’s alternate universe Death Wish movie, to a lesser Stephen King film getting the expanded treatment. We got a lot. Sorry it took longer than usual. We actually recorded this one before Fantastic Fest and I blame myself for losing track. Because literally, I am to blame.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. AHSOKA SERIES REVIEW

Rosario Dawson returns to the role she’s been destined to play since her appearances in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka Tano. After the fall of the Galactic Empire, the former Jedi Knight (and easily one of the most beloved characters in the new EU) investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy. That threat? The return of none other than Grand Admiral Thrawn (one of the most beloved characters of the original EU). Meanwhile, Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) is ready to risk the safety of the entire foundation of the New Republic in order to rescue her surrogate brother, Ezra Bridger, from his exile. The heroes come face-to-face with two Dark Jedi, Baylan Skoll (the late and extraordinary Ray Stevenson) and Shin Hati, as well as the Night Sisters, arguing politicians, snarky droids, and Force ghosts. And if that’s not enough Star Wars for you, this series has got cameos from characters all across the canon. This is the culmination of Dave Filoni’s 18 years helming most of the Star Wars EU, beginning with The Clone Wars, where Ahsoka made her first appearance. Melina, Neil, and T.C. gather in the One Of Us Jedi Council Chambers to have a spoiler-filled deep-dive discussion of the series and attempt to step into the World Between Worlds to discover how long it’ll take to get a season two.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING SEASON 3 REVIEW

Which of the Pickwick triplets did it, or any of the other members of this star-studded cast? Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez return as Charles, Oliver, and Mabel for the third season of their comedic mystery series Only Murders in the Building, and this time, they’re going Broadway, baby. Picking up from the cliffhanger of season two, our beloved podcast detectives must unravel the mystery of the murder of Hollywood actor Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) on the opening night of Oliver’s directorial return to the Broadway stage. Was it Kimber Min, the show’s ingenue running a not-so-regulatory supplement business out of her dressing room? Was it Cliff NeMeo, the producer that kisses his mom on the lips (but it’s not creepy because he’s gay)? Was it Loretta Durkin, the aging actress who we’re supposed to believe is only now making her Broadway debut despite being played by the iconic Meryl Streep? Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

SHE CAME TO ME MOVIE REVIEW

You know what they say: you can’t spell opera without Oh, perhaps a saucy affair is in order. Writer/director Rebecca Miller presents She Came to Me. Brilliant composer of transcendent operas Steven Lauddem (Peter Dinklage) is a suffering artist who has come down with a horrible case of writer’s block and the heartbreaking loss of inspiration. His spouse, Dr. Patricia Jessup-Lauddem (Anne Hathaway), is a total neat freak who loves cleaning, schedules, routines, and perfect posture. They are raising an 18 year old college student, Julian (Evan Ellison), who excels in the sciences and in trapping the heart of a young scientific 16 year old prodigy named Tereza (Harlow Jane). Tereza’s mother, a maid named Magdalena (Joanna Kulig), does not want the unbridled passions of young love to destroy her daughter’s life like it has hers and implores her not to engage in sexual relations, especially with a boy who happens to be the son of one of her employers. As if that consensual walk of egg shells wasn’t enough, Steven finds a way to unblock his writers obstruction: with the help of a boat captain who puts the Tug in tug boat. Eh? eh? Katrina Trento (Marisa Tomei) is addicted to romance and falls into the role of Steven’s sexy muse. Bradly, Frank, and Eliot unpack this heart shaped box of old and new love couplings, discuss whether or not you should shove so much story into one valentine just because you can, and muse over the legacy of the Miller name.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Eliot Nelson (Screener Squad, Staff Writer)

Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. THE WONDERFUL STORY OF HENRY SUGAR (AND 3 OTHER STORIES) REVIEW

How lucky are we that we get not 1, not 2, not 3, but 5 new projects from Wes Anderson in 2023?! Along with Asteroid City earlier this year, Wes Anderson has released 4 new short films on Netflix based on the works of Roald Dahl. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is the main short released which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Sugar. Sugar, initially a selfish well-to-do gambler, develops the ability to see without using his eyes leading to riches beyond his imagination. Yet, he finds himself bored and dissatisfied with life. Like other Anderson films, the story within a story structure is used masterfully showcasing excellent performances by Anderson newcomers Ben Kingsley, Richard Ayoade, Dev Patel, Rupert Friend, and finally returning to the Andersonverse Ralph Fiennes. The other shorts (The Swan, The Rat Catcher, and Poison) are equally delightful and beautiful, reusing the actors in different roles. These shorts show Anderson at the top of his game and it’s no wonder that these films are being heralded as some of the best of his filmography. Wright, Melina, and Ryan have a grand ol’ time discussing the quartet of films and which ones were their favorites.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. REPTILE MOVIE REVIEW

I had a thought while stuck in traffic that Benicio Del Toro sure can act but how are his skills with the script? Netflix presents Reptile, directed by Grant Singer and written by Benjamin Brewer, Grant Singer and Benicio Del Toro. The story starts with a young woman who is stabbed to death multiple times at her place of employment as a realtor. Her boyfriend Will Grady (Justin Timberlake) is the owner of the real estate firm and is cooperating with Detective Tom Nichols (Benicio Del Toro). Tom is a hard boiled, no-nonsense, stop at nothing, wild card with a past of overlooking sketchy behavior while cutting through red tape to get perpetrators a shiny new pair of silver chain linked bracelets courtesy of the boys in blue. He’s also the loving husband to spouse Judy Nichols (Alicia Silverstone) who’s not so clueless about her husband’s unraveling mental stability. When it comes to a talented cast of character actors, all the usual suspects are here. Eric Bogosian plays Captain Robert Allen, forced into early retirement by an age related ailment. Ato Essandoh is Detective Cleary, Tom’s partner in justice. Francis Fisher is Camille Grady’s mother, who’s just as ambitious for success as her offspring and Michael Pitt plays Eli Phillips, the prime suspect. Bradly, TC, and Frank have a grand old time reviewing the evidence, comparing works of noir, and try their best to remain n’sync (groan) throughout the review of Reptile.

T.C. De Witt (Screener Squad)

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016.
