HELL HOUSE LLC ORIGINS: THE CARMICHAEL MANOR REVIEW

Oh so very spooky scary month is back and when the witching hour is upon us and theaters are shutting down for the night, a great honoured tradition is to gather up old trashy stabby horror film franchises and binge till morning. Long running found footage film series Hell House LLC is back with a 4th installment and origin story called Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor. This film focuses on modern day true crime bloggers investigating the brutal murders that originally took place at the hotel. Way back in the 80s, Catherine Carmichael (Cayla Berejikian) and Margaret Carmichael (Victoria Andrunik) are mysteriously slashed to death and brother Patrick Carmichael (Gideon Berger) has disappeared. Modern day sexy couple super sleuths Margot Bentley (Bridget Rose Perrotta) and Rebecca Vickers (Destiny Leilani Brown) review the case files and search for clues to find the Carmichael family’s killer. Along with alcoholic brother Chase Bentley (James Liddell), the in-over-their-heads coeds will stay at the manor and find out that sometimes the horror of a life ended abruptly remains long after death. Also there are clown mannequins. But of course there are, because it’s a Hell House LLC movie. Bradly, Jordan, and Sarah Jane discuss tension building as an art form, what makes a haunted house work when mashed with the found footage genre, and give a shout out to the scariest clown performance of all time. Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. THE KILLER MOVIE REVIEW

Director David Fincher reunites with his writer from Se7en, Andrew Kevin Walker, for this adaptation of the highly regarded French comic series of the same name. Michael Fassbender is only known by the name The Killer as the film follows him and his somewhat typical workday. Which is hanging out across the street from a fancy hotel waiting patiently for days on end till the target of his assassination contract appears. When he does, despite every bit of professionalism and experience, for once, the killer misses his target. A narrow escape and all seems fine until it’s clear that someone wants him dead for it and has set other killers on him. Fincher makes a icy cold character piece here, as most of the dialogue in the film is Fassbender’s own mental narration, describing how to be good at your job as he hunts down those who are hunting him. Chris, Wright, Marco, and Nathan do their best to be total professionals in this review (but they too miss the mark).

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). THE CONFERENCE MOVIE REVIEW

Have you ever been forced to go to a stupid retreat with your stupid co-workers because your stupid boss wants to promote more “synergy” within the workplace? While sitting there, you take a sip from the one free alcoholic drink your employer is covering for the weekend, and while wallowing in your insecurities, a stranger with a mascot head comes and slays half of your co-workers. That’s the premise of today’s film The Conference. Streaming on Netflix, it’s a mixed bag of cat and mouse horror, mixed with dry, European humor. It’s like if you took David Brent and the rest of the cast of The Office (OG) and tried to murder all of them. It’s a slick premise that comes with slicker editing and cinematography. The people who made this movie know what they’re doing which is totally reflected in all facets of this film. Don’t believe me? Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. RESERVATION DOGS SEASON 3 REVIEW

Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi’s Reservation Dogs returns to Hulu for its third and final season. We last left the dogs stranded at a beach in California after the four bid farewell to their friend Daniel. Bear Smallhill (D’Pharaoh Woon A-Tai) says he is not returning to the reservation and is choosing to remain in California. He plans to track down the home of his father, and maybe learn a little something about his peoples’ fathers and the paths they’ve walked. Elora (Devery Jacobs) has discovered that the man that made love to her mother all those years ago then vanished has a facebook and is super white! Elora must decide whether or not she wants this man in her life before she decides what to do with her future. Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), stoic and brash as usual, is learning how the traditions of her people should be carried on and who to commune with in order to sustain these beliefs. This sends her on a very personal and moving journey of self discovery. Then there is Cheese (Lane Factor). He goes camping. Being the youngest of the Res Dogs, he’ll come to terms with partings and look forward to greetings. It’s a finale in which the audience says goodbye to the Reservation Dogs, and hopes will encourage them to say hello to many more cultures and voices from storytellers and creatives that have been shunned for so long. Bradly, Melina, and Eliot gush over this finale and series as a whole and praise the cast’s outstanding performances.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Eliot Nelson (Screener Squad, Staff Writer)

Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible. His favorite movies include The Lord of the Rings, City of God, Dawn of the Dead, and Groundhog Day. TOTALLY KILLER MOVIE REVIEW

It’s that time of year where people are watching as many horror, thriller, and/or slasher movies as they can for the Halloween season, and we’ve got a new one for you to add to your list. We can sell it to you as simply as this: Scream meets Back to the Future. If that doesn’t hook you, allow us to elaborate. Thirty-five years after the shocking murders of three teens in a small town, an infamous masked killer returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim. When 17-year-old Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) comes face-to-face with the masked maniac, she accidentally time-travels back to 1987. Forced to navigate the unfamiliar culture of totally radical 80s-isms, like chain smoking in cars, casual racism, and zero security standards in schools, Jamie teams up with her teenage mother to take down the psycho once and for all. Sarah Jane, Chad, and T.C. put on their Jordache jeans, Wayfarer sunglasses, and neon crop tops, hop into the One Of Us Delorean, and show their appreciation for this genre mashup.

DICKS: THE MUSICAL MOVIE REVIEW

Director Larry Charles (Borat, Bruno) likes to handle outrageous comedy material that borders on offensive. Adapting this off-broadway musical into a film was a step too far for some of our reviewers. The musical story involves two twin brothers, played by the show’s creators Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, who were separated at birth. One stayed with their father (Nathan Lane) who has recently decided that he’s actually gay and for some reason has two, right out of a Troma film, ‘swamp boys’ living in a cage in his apartment. The other lives with his mother (Megan Mullally) who is oddly ancient with some kind of dementia? It’s unclear but she doesn’t often make much sense and her vagina lives outside of her body and can fly. Sigh. The two brothers, who don’t know the other exists, are homophobic assholes who think they are God’s gift to women and have jobs as salesmen racking up the top numbers at their company. When they get moved to the same office they discover they are twins, and basically develop ‘the parent trap‘, as in the old film, to reunite their parents. And also have sex with each other. KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON REVIEW

Martin Scorsese’s latest film clocks in at a whopping 206 minutes, but what a fine 206 minutes they are. Killers of the Flower Moon is adapted from the non-fiction book of the same name but switches the perspective from a FBI lawman (Jesse Plemons) investigating the mysterious and rapidly mounting deaths of members of the Osage tribe in Oklahoma, to two men at the center of these events, Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) and William (Robert De Niro). Ernest has recently returned from WWI and has come to the reservation looking for work, where William is a cattle baron. But William’s wealth doesn’t match those of his Osage neighbors. When lots of oil was discovered on their lands, their entire lifestyle changed, making them among some of the richest people in the country. But why are so many of them dying in questionable circumstances? And why are many of those who are dying the wives of white men? Ernest hits it off with one of the wealthy women on the reservation, Mollie (Lily Gladstone), and they get hitched, but then her entire family starts dying off. It’s pretty easy to call shenanigans here. Chris, Wright, Frank, and Nathan take on this deeply disturbing and true tale to both celebrate it and wish that it was even more in depth with the true scope of this tale of immense human evil.

V/H/S 85 MOVIE REVIEW

Welcome One of Us listener, and Happy Halloween. Traditionally we dress up in costumes, wear some makeup, and head out to the streets to ask strangers for free candy. Everything is as it should be… but wait, it wouldn’t be Halloween without another spooky sequel. Today we Have V/H/S/85 which I’m assuming is the 84th sequel to the original V/H/S. They must be making some killer returns…Anyways V/H/S/85 has 6 short stories: Total Copy, No Wake, God of Death, TKNOGD, Ambrosia, and Dreamkill. All have their ups and downs but the reviewer favorite seems to be No Wake/Ambrosia… you’ll find out why. Overall, the shorts are entertaining despite their flaws, and there’s definitely worse things you could be watching. So sit down, relax, and let Sarah, Lewayne, Mike, and Chad lull you to sleep with stories of horror…. oooooooOOOOOOOOOOOooooooo (scary ghost noise).

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. APPENDAGE MOVIE REVIEW

A young fashion designer seems fine on the surface but secretly struggles with debilitating self-doubt. Pfft, been there. That’s the life of any creative person. What else ya got, movie? Ah, well, soon these buried feelings begin to make Hannah physically sick and sprout into a ferocious growth on her body: The Appendage. Aaaaand there’s the twist. Body horror manifestation of anxieties. David Cronenberg would be proud. As Hannah’s health declines, The appendage grows more powerful and begins to fuel her fears, her perceived lack of talent at work, her deteriorating relationships with her boyfriend and best friend and her parents’ lack of love and understanding. At her breaking point, Hannah makes a shocking discovery – there are others out there like her. Mindy, Lewyane, and T.C. dissect the good and the bad of this concept, peeling back the skin of it and deciding what narrative and allegorical protrusions thrive and which should be immediately detached and cauterized at the stump.

IT LIVES INSIDE MOVIE REVIEW

Overy 30 years ago a very ignorant and self assured TV dad once said “The code of the schoolyard… Don’t tattle. Always make fun of those different from you. Never say anything, unless you’re sure everyone feels exactly the same way you do. What else…” and to this day those words unfortunately live on from the monkey bars to the lockered halls of adolescence. Directed and written by Bishal Dutta and co-written by Ashish Mehta, It Lives Inside is a story of second generation immigrants struggling with cultural identity in the middle of an ancient creature feature tied to the stories of their ancestors. Samidha (Megan Suri) is a pretty popular Hindu high school student who tolerates her popular in-crowd friends. Her childhood friend Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) moves through the halls whispering to a glass jar and is completely shut off from her classes and colleagues. A teacher named Joyce (Betty Gabriel) seeing all the red flags of depression within Tamira askes Samidha to talk to her, since they used to be the best of friends. Tamira tries to confide in Samidha but Samidha is not having her rantings about monsters from Hindu fairy tales. This aggressive rejection of a friend in need results in an invisible monster with a hunger for sorrow. Bradly, Jordan, and Melina discuss the horror genre as an elevated platform for stories from different perspectives, in this case, Hindu culture and teenagers. They debate what’s more spooky, the Jaws approach or the front and center loud and in your face method.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.
