DREAM SCENARIO MOVIE REVIEW

For some people, Nicolas Cage is the man of their dreams. But with the new film, Dream Scenario, Nicolas Cage is the man of everyone’s dreams! Nic Cage stars as Paul Matthews in Kristoffer Borgli’s new film. He plays a mild-mannered, put upon, nebbish college professor. All of a sudden people start to have odd dreams with him in them just observing the dreamers and nothing more. More and more people start to dream of Matthews and thus makes him an overnight viral sensation. The fame starts to affect his family life though, with his wife Janet, Julianne Nicholson, disapproving of his willingness to be in the limelight. Once Paul makes a critical mistake with his personal life, the dreams turn into nightmares thus creating a whirlwind of tragedies for Paul and his family. Wright, Mike, and Nathan discuss how the film showcases Cage’s acting chops and if the movie lives up to the high concept it presents or just has its head in the clouds.

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). THE ENFIELD POLTERGEIST SERIES REVIEW

You’ve seen hundreds of thousands of films based on the Lutz family and their Amityville Horror but you’ve probably only seen tens of dozens of haunted house films based on the Hodgson’s! This isn’t your typical paint by numbers gas station bargain bin buy 1 feature starring Rob Schneider get the second DVD free spooky film. This is a documentary. It happened on 284 Green St in Enfield, London, between 1977 and 1979. 11 and 13 year old sisters Janet and Margaret Hodgson were haunted by a spooky scary poltergeist. The following 4 episodes are now streaming on Apple TV Plus. The Enfield Poltergeist focuses on the hours of audio recorded by paranormal investigator Maurice Grosse in his quest to expose the supernatural phenomenon to the world. The documentary presents the real life audio paired with actual photos, documents, and real life reenactors who recreated the nightmare of living in a haunted house. But it’s not all true believers and the testimonies of easily influenced children. The episodes also prepare a skeptic lens for the old at heart that feel the other side is nothing but a black empty void that will spare no one. Tick tock mortal clock. Bradly, Matt, and Melina conduct a séance of their own and reach across the veil to the other side with open minds but also keep things fair and balanced with the eyes of skeptics when presented with easily dismissible evidence. Kids do some pretty crazy things for attention, Doctor Grosse. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, carry the fire of halloween into November and keep the spirits of christmas at bay with a quick binge of The Enfield Poltergeist.

Matt Foster (Screener Squad)

Matt Foster is a stand up comic, podcaster, and movie critic currently living in the greater Salt Lake City area. His lifelong love of genre film began early, when he realized they freaked out his mom. He performs (epidemics permitting) regularly on Dungeons and Comedy, a DND live play with standup comedians, and is the slightly less mustache-y half of the Nighthawks Podcast, a cinema-centric discussion cohosted by Trevor T. Trujillo.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

THANKSGIVING MOVIE REVIEW

It’s been 16 years since the fake trailer for this film appeared in the movie Grindhouse, but Eli Roth finally got around to making it. Your reviewers, Chris, Drew, Mike, and Nathan, are glad he did. The story takes place in Plymouth Massachusetts where it’s been a year since a Black Friday sale at a local Target-esque shopping outlet went horribly wrong Multiple folks were killed or seriously injured and despite being warned that this was severely understaffed and being attending by a feverish mob, the store owner did nothing to prevent it. Now, there’s a masked killer on the loose, wearing a plastic mask of John Carver (the founder of the town) and a pilgrim’s outfit, and he’s killing off people with messy gusto who attended the sale and caused chaos. It all comes down to, of course, a group of attractive teens who have to find out who the killer is before they become grist for Eli Roth’s gore mill. Check out our review of Thanksgiving!

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). LOKI SEASON 2 REVIEW

Previously, on Loki: Sylvie (Sophia D Martino) has slain He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) at the end of all time and Sparta-kicked our titular Loki (Tom Hiddleston) through a time portal. Now Loki keeps on slipping into the past, present and future of the TVA, our own reality, and variant timelines. With the help of his long time friend Mobius (Owen Wilson) and the writer of the TVA manuel Oroborus (Ke Huy Quan), Loki will attempt to stop the time crimes of He Who Remains by tracking down his variant Watler Timeley (also, Jonathan Majors) and save him from his own future ambitions which could result in the end of all things. All your favorites from season 1 are punching the clock and working overtime. Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) may have closer ties that bind to He Who Remains then she remembers. Miss Minutes (Tara Strong) is as cute and terrifying as ever. Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) is trying to separate truth from fiction in her own life. Brad (Rafael Casal) is a TVA agent who just wants his old pre-TVA life back. Bradly, Sarah Jane, Eliot, and Harmony put forward a motion to proceed with the proper scheduling of discussion regarding the MCU as a whole and Loki’s long journey within it, the blue box writing mixed with the powerhouse visuals of the Disney conglomerate, and the emotional weight of a character that’s been enchanting audiences for over a decade. Sarah Jane was born and raised in Southern California but currently calls Austin, TX her home. She’s seen over 5,700 movies so far with zero plans on stopping. SALTBURN MOVIE REVIEW

The director of 2020’s indie hit Promising Young Woman returns for this new film that is going to kinda-sorta remind you of The Talented Mr. Ripley. Thought I’d get that out of the way first because literally everyone on their way out of the screening was discussing that quality of it, including your erstwhile reviewers here, Chris, Wright, and Frank. The story follows Oliver (Barry Keoghan) a scholarship kid at Oxford who has trouble fitting in. An unexpected friendship is struck between him and the school’s golden boy Felix (Jacob Elordi). Eventually Oliver, an orphan, to go spend the summer with Felix at his insanely huge mansion that his extremely privileged and downright odd family live at. But Oliver isn’t exactly what he seems and these rich folks are exactly what they seem. Advantage: Oliver. We give our review of the twisty, funny, and dark sophomore film from Emerald Fennell, Saltburn.

TRASH IN THE CAN: BILLY OWENS AND THE SECRET OF THE RUNES

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. ATTACK ON TITAN: THE FINAL SEASON PART 4

Adapted from the popular manga written by Hajime Isayama, on April 7, 2013 the first episode of Attack on Titan premiered. After a decade of awesome horror violence, intriguing cat and mouse mystery, and dozens of memes, the stage has been set for this grand saga’s final curtain. The century-spanning conflicts of the descendants of Ymir and Citizens of Marlay will have to set aside their conflicts and join together. Levi is a disfigured and shell of his former self, but is still holding on to his promise of vengeance against Zeke. Jean and Connie are still kicking around and looking for rational solutions in the face of Eren’s simple minded end-all solutions. Eren’s childhood friends, Armin and Mikasa, along with their brothers in arms from the scout regiment, have decided to cut the ties that bind them to Eren and stop his evil plan of mass genocide. This is the series finale of Attack on Titan. Bradly, Shak, Dogget, and Jena give their hearts to the audience and discuss the decade spanning saga, its place in the overall anime community, and if perhaps even someone like Gabby can be forgiven.

NYAD MOVIE REVIEW

110 miles from Cuba to Florida. An open water swim deemed impossible by experts, sailors, and spectators alike. Diana Nyad in her prime had become renowned for her long distance swimming. In the ’70s she swam around the island of Manhattan in record time. She also swam from the Bahamas to Florida. In ’78 she attempted the swim from Cuba to Florida and failed to finish the swim. She later would become a published author, motivational speaker, and sports personality. At 60 years old, Diana Nyad (Annette Bening) convinces her long time friend Bonnie (Jodie Foster) to coach her as she embarks on conquering the record that got away. Nyad is directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and written by Diana Nyad and Julia Cox. It shows us the journey of Diana through real life footage and the brilliant narrative portrayal of Diana through the inspiring performance of Annette Bening. It’s a film of never giving up on your dreams or your friendships. Bradly, Frank, and Jordan discuss their knowledge of the woman or lack thereof, discuss the success of integrating real life footage into a biopic narrative, then close it all out with a hip-hip-hooray for biopics that don’t paint characters with broad inhumane strokes.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 330: THE BIGGEST STACK EVER

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). GEN V SERIES REVIEW

To live up to your full potential and discover what your purpose is in life you gotta go to the right college. What is the right college for a kid that can spontaneously combust or shrink to the size of a cricket? The answer is Godolkin University! Visit the official website to see if Godolkin University is right for you. Within the universe of Amazon Prime’s The Boys, Evan Goldberg, Eric Kripke, and Craig Rosenberg present Gen V. When our college-age cast of characters were just wee toddlers, their parents injected them with Compound V in hopes to give them a better life. Goldolkin University will put them through the proper educational courses and ethical studies to mold and shape them into the heroes of tomorrow. Orphaned as a young teenager after discovering her blood control powers, Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) is given a second chance at the life she deserves within the halls of the university. Her dorm mate Emma (Lizze Broadway) has the power to shrink. Other students include: Andre Anderson (Chance Perdomo) whose father was once upon a time a member of The Seven. Jordan (London Thor/Derek Luh) who can change genders and the properties of their powers when doing so. The number one hero at the school, Golden Boy (Patrick Schwarzenegger), can cover himself in fire while his bae Cate (Maddie Phillips) can control people, literally. The students form a bond when they realize the school may be hiding some life threatening and child murdering secrets. The Dean, Shetty (Shelley Conn) just wants what’s best for the students and you know what they say about omelettes. Bradly, Dogget, and Eliot discuss the success of The Boys and how the spin off holds up against that success, the satirical metaphorical presentation of super hero colleges, and reveal what sorta tax programs should be set up in a world run by and for titans.
