WHAT HAPPENS LATER MOVIE REVIEW

According to Love Actually and a rant from Ben Affleck in a scene from Dogma, there is no more romantic place on earth than an airport. Directed and co-written by actress Meg Ryan, What Happens Later ponders the famous beach boys lyrics from “God Only Knows What I’d Be Without You” and gives it the holiday human touch. Bill (David Duchovny) is a 50-something business man with a briefcase who hates new music and talking about his past. Willa (Meg Ryan) is a 50-something spiritual life consultant who loves crystals and resolving feelings from her past. They happen to run into each other on a layover and delay due to snowfall in what could be considered a supernatural airport. The shocking twist is that they use to date each other 20 years ago. Now trapped in a terminal together, they discuss the lives they lived without each other to determine if any future exists for them together. Bradly, Frank, and Melina checklist the cliches on rotation like so much unclaimed unwanted baggage in search of what does work in this film which began as a stage play and evolved into a rom com featuring charming old actors. Progress is progress!

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. THE CONTINENTAL: FROM THE WORLD OF JOHN WICK

John Wick 4 came out this year and just crushed it! It was an epic bullet ballet, worthy of being among the very best of action movies, and further cementing Keanu Reeves as one of the GOATs. So, with that movie doing what it did so damn well, you would think there would be a bigger push for people to check out the spinoff prequel series that is actually three feature-length episodes, and thus making it three additional movies to the John Wick universe. You would think that, but you would be wrong. Because no one is talking about it. No one that is, except for Melina, Dogget, and T.C. The Continental: From the World of John Wick tells the story of how a young Winston Scott (Colin Wodell), took on the general manager of the famed hotel, Cormac O’Conner (Mel Gibson), and came to his position as proprietor of the New York branch of The Continental, the chain of hotel safe havens for legal assassins on the grounds of which no business may ever take place. It explores variations on real-world events in post vietnam New York and has all the things you may have come to expect from the John Wick movies, but also not. It’s got a tv show budget, so what’s here is hampered by monetary restrictions. How does this prequel hold up as added lore and mythology to the Wick-a-verse? Lock and load. Here we go.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. BLUE EYE SAMURAI SERIES REVIEW

Welcome to Edo-era Japan where isolationism is key to survival. Anyone who is an outsider is ostracized maybe sometimes murdered. The Japanese don’t want to fuck with white folk (for good reasons). But you know what white colonizers are like… A pillage here, a bunch of rapes over there… The rape turns into an unexpected pregnancy, and a baby born to a country that sees them as a half-breed. Meet Mizu, a Samurai on the revenge track to murdering four white men (or potential fathers) so her soul can be at peace. But the road to revenge is never easy, and Mizu will have to form alliances if she wants to see her mission succeed. The story is good, but where the magic lies is in the animation, which is a mix of traditional anime techniques mixed in with 3d rendering. It’s crazy how good this is compared to the traditional fare we receive from our Netflix overlords. This show has style, heart, and full frontal nudity. Do yourself a favor and binge this… maybe with your mom in the room to make it more awkward. This has been Mindy, Jena, and Chad approved.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. WISH MOVIE REVIEW

Disney’s latest animated release Wish is inspired by their Centennial anniversary, and yeah, they don’t want you to forget it for a second during this film. The kingdom of Rosas was founded by a powerful wizard who becomes King Magnifico (Chris Pine). He and his Queen (Angelique Cabral) rule with a gentle hand and the townspeople are extremely happy and supportive of their king. One little thing: when you immigrate to the kingdom, or when you become of age, in a ceremony the king asks you to hold your fondest wish in your heart, and then he removes it…for safekeeping. Regularly he grants some of these wishes with his magic, but the downside is you no longer remember your wish until that time. Asha (Ariana DeBose) is a loyal citizen who strives to get appointed as the king’s new apprentice (sorcerer’s apprentice, get it?) but she also hopes that the wish of her 100 year old grandfather will be granted on his birthday. When she discovers that the wish system is flawed and her discontent is expressed, she decides to take matters into her own hands to fix things with the help of a magical star who appears to her when she wishes upon it (*wink*) for change. Before you know it, she and her seven friends (*double wink*) are on the run from a decidedly descending into evil king and she has to save the kingdom and the wishes of its people. Sounds about Disney as f**k, right? If only it was any good. Chris, Mindy, and Spidermike take on this new film with a critical eye and wish it was a lot better than it is.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. IT’S A WONDERFUL KNIFE MOVIE REVIEW

Ever since Scream took a stab at flipping the tired slasher genre on its head, more and more millennial filmmakers have come along drawing inspiration from Wes Craven’s Ghostface. Horror comedies have become a genre unto themselves. And then there is the rare mashup of slasher, comedy and a holiday! It’s a Wonderful Knife pretty much tells you everything you need to know in its title alone. Winnie’s life is less than wonderful one year after saving her town from a psychotic killer on Christmas Eve. When she wishes she was never born, she finds herself magically transported to a nightmarish parallel universe. With the murderous maniac now back, she must team up with a misfit to identify the culprit and get back to her own reality. Lewayne, Chad, and T.C. gather around the One Of Us yule log to unwrap this new slasher in the hopes that there may be a new seasonal tradition of watching “The Angel” tear apart a small town in sequel after sequel, spinning other classics on their heads. Maybe “A Christmas Gory” or “Massacre on 34th Street”?

T.C. De Witt (Screener Squad)

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

DREAM SCENARIO MOVIE REVIEW

For some people, Nicolas Cage is the man of their dreams. But with the new film, Dream Scenario, Nicolas Cage is the man of everyone’s dreams! Nic Cage stars as Paul Matthews in Kristoffer Borgli’s new film. He plays a mild-mannered, put upon, nebbish college professor. All of a sudden people start to have odd dreams with him in them just observing the dreamers and nothing more. More and more people start to dream of Matthews and thus makes him an overnight viral sensation. The fame starts to affect his family life though, with his wife Janet, Julianne Nicholson, disapproving of his willingness to be in the limelight. Once Paul makes a critical mistake with his personal life, the dreams turn into nightmares thus creating a whirlwind of tragedies for Paul and his family. Wright, Mike, and Nathan discuss how the film showcases Cage’s acting chops and if the movie lives up to the high concept it presents or just has its head in the clouds.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). THE ENFIELD POLTERGEIST SERIES REVIEW

You’ve seen hundreds of thousands of films based on the Lutz family and their Amityville Horror but you’ve probably only seen tens of dozens of haunted house films based on the Hodgson’s! This isn’t your typical paint by numbers gas station bargain bin buy 1 feature starring Rob Schneider get the second DVD free spooky film. This is a documentary. It happened on 284 Green St in Enfield, London, between 1977 and 1979. 11 and 13 year old sisters Janet and Margaret Hodgson were haunted by a spooky scary poltergeist. The following 4 episodes are now streaming on Apple TV Plus. The Enfield Poltergeist focuses on the hours of audio recorded by paranormal investigator Maurice Grosse in his quest to expose the supernatural phenomenon to the world. The documentary presents the real life audio paired with actual photos, documents, and real life reenactors who recreated the nightmare of living in a haunted house. But it’s not all true believers and the testimonies of easily influenced children. The episodes also prepare a skeptic lens for the old at heart that feel the other side is nothing but a black empty void that will spare no one. Tick tock mortal clock. Bradly, Matt, and Melina conduct a séance of their own and reach across the veil to the other side with open minds but also keep things fair and balanced with the eyes of skeptics when presented with easily dismissible evidence. Kids do some pretty crazy things for attention, Doctor Grosse. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, carry the fire of halloween into November and keep the spirits of christmas at bay with a quick binge of The Enfield Poltergeist.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Matt Foster (Screener Squad)

Matt Foster is a stand up comic, podcaster, and movie critic currently living in the greater Salt Lake City area. His lifelong love of genre film began early, when he realized they freaked out his mom. He performs (epidemics permitting) regularly on Dungeons and Comedy, a DND live play with standup comedians, and is the slightly less mustache-y half of the Nighthawks Podcast, a cinema-centric discussion cohosted by Trevor T. Trujillo.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

THANKSGIVING MOVIE REVIEW

It’s been 16 years since the fake trailer for this film appeared in the movie Grindhouse, but Eli Roth finally got around to making it. Your reviewers, Chris, Drew, Mike, and Nathan, are glad he did. The story takes place in Plymouth Massachusetts where it’s been a year since a Black Friday sale at a local Target-esque shopping outlet went horribly wrong Multiple folks were killed or seriously injured and despite being warned that this was severely understaffed and being attending by a feverish mob, the store owner did nothing to prevent it. Now, there’s a masked killer on the loose, wearing a plastic mask of John Carver (the founder of the town) and a pilgrim’s outfit, and he’s killing off people with messy gusto who attended the sale and caused chaos. It all comes down to, of course, a group of attractive teens who have to find out who the killer is before they become grist for Eli Roth’s gore mill. Check out our review of Thanksgiving!

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
