SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET MOVIE REVIEW

There’s nothing worse than wasted talent on a dumb movie. Case and point; the movie Skeletons in the Closet, now streaming on Shudder… It’s just bad. Not “good/bad” or “haha funny bad.” It’s just bad. Mark (Terrence Howard) and his wife Valentina (Valery M. Ortiz) are in trouble. They have serious financial problems and Mark just got fired. And their daughter has brain cancer and they need 50 grand for surgery. Out of desperation, Mark turns to his brother Andres (Cuba Gooding Jr.) for financial help and it’s not gonna come from a legit or safe place. Also there’s a ghost or something, a fortune teller (Sally Kirkman) predicting doom, and more stuff from movies that don’t feel like they belong together. T.C. put it best in that it feels like two movies. It’s unfocused, tone deaf to its own universe, has terrible vfx, and less than stellar camera work. If you decide to watch it, let us know your thoughts in the comments. Lewayne, T.C., and Chad had to hire a fortune teller so they could know if they’ll ever be able to erase this movie from their brains…

T.C. De Witt (Screener Squad)

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS MOVIE REVIEW

What do you do if you’re in the middle of a road trip in a rental (or a ‘drive-away’ in this case) and discover that hidden in your car is some bizarre contraband and some real bad dudes are after you to get it? If you’re Jamie and Marian, apparently you just have a lot more sex. These two friends couldn’t be more different from each other. Jamie (Margaret Qualley) is a precariously uninhibited free spirit who picks up women pretty much anywhere she goes for sexy shenanigans. Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) wants love but can’t break out of her shell enough to meet anyone. But being in danger might be what makes these two work together. That’s the romantic premise of Ethan (and only Ethan) Coen’s new absurdist road trip LGBTQ+ comedy Drive-Away Dolls. And while this has ‘cult classic’ written all over it and our reviewers certainly enjoyed it, Chris, Mike, Alan, and Frank can’t help but doubt its widespread appeal. And, for once, are significantly less risqué than the film they are reviewing.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. Alan Galinsky (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born and raised in Texas, Alan Galinsky is a lifetime movie fan. As a youth, he would rent multiple movies every weekend and go to the theater for the latest releases, and that pace has remained steady. When Alan isn’t watching movies, you can find him talking about movies. When he’s not talking about movies, you can find him playing music in the band Delicate Boys.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). Where does an early 2000’s successful rom com action blockbuster IP go after the credits roll and the hot leads would rather die than work together ever again? Why, to a streaming 8 episode series of course! Creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane bring you a very new take on Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Our two star-crossed lovers, played by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, find themselves placed together by the deep cover super secret organization they work for. They are given the code names John and Jane Smith and pose as a married couple as their cover for performing espionage provided by a mysterious person on the other end of a text conversation that they call Hi Hi. Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. TRUE DETECTIVE – NIGHT COUNTRY REVIEW

Time is a flat circle…again. True Detective is back with its 4th season now with showrunner and director Issa López. This season, aptly named Night Country, takes us to Ennis, Alaska where the town is preparing for the grueling six month period of darkness. On the eve of the first day of dark, a group of scientists from the local Tsalal research facility go missing and Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) leads the investigation. Former partner and now State Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) pushes her way into the case since a severed tongue is found at the crime scene which may belong to a victim from an unsolved case that haunts her to this day. As the scientists are discovered in what may be the most gruesome popsicle ever conceived, Danvers and Navarro reluctantly pair up to solve the grisly murder and uncover darker secrets that plague the town of Ennis. Wright, Sarah Jane, and Neil discuss the newest season’s change from the gothic, grimy, and sweaty previous seasons to the cold and desolate night country. Does True Detective’s newest season hold a candle to 1st season’s masterpiece or does it shrine through the darkness as a successful entry? Listen as they discuss True Detective: Night Country!

I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

MADAME WEB MOVIE REVIEW

Sony Pictures’ spin-off Spider-verse keeps getting more bizarre in the way it plucks side characters from Spider-Man’s story and reinvents them for its own purposes. None more so than Madame Web, which takes the 90-something year old clairvoyant and makes her Dakota Johnson. In this world, Spider-Man doesn’t exist yet (it’s set in 2003) and Johnson, who plays Cassie Webb, is the orphaned daughter of a woman who died in the Amazon after finding a rare spider that a group of super-spider-people let bite her in an attempt to save her life after she was shot by one of her teammates who wanted the spider for himself (that was all in the first ten minutes of the film). She was pregnant with Cassie at the time and so, many years later, wham: superpowers. Sort of. The bite basically makes you into Spider-Man, as her mother’s murderer discovered (Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims) and with that comes precognitive dreams but all he ever sees is three teenage girls with their own spider-powers who, in the future, murder him. He uses his resources to track them down and now he has finally found them. His bad luck that through, I guess coincidence (whatever, movie), so has Cassie, whose newly hatched pre-cog powers give her visions of them being murdered by evil spider-dude and is set on saving them. And so the chase begins. Chris, Wright, Spider-Mike, and Nathan discuss this failure and how it is slightly less failure than Sony’s other spider-verse failures.

An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. He lives in Austin with his beloved Dachshund-Maltese and trusted sidekick, Dean. He can also be heard on RageSelect. He can be found on Twitter and Instagram.

Wright Sulek (Screener Squad, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Trash in the Can, Audio Editor)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 334: DISNEY AND THEN I GUESS MOVIES

On this very special episode of Digital Noise, John reviews his first trip ever to Disney (spoiler: he dug it). He and Chris go on for quite a while reviewing the rides and experience. Oh, wait, we’re supposed to be reviewing home releases on this show? Ok fine. We talk about two two-fers with two of the most macho men of the 70s/80s and how the sequels don’t live up to the first films. We disagree on a psychedelic sex romp that is widely, at least, referenced. We are not possessed to ever watch again a recent possession movie. And more. Much more.

John Gholson is a writer and cartoonist with bylines at Movies.com, Moviefone, and Vice and illustration work for GQ and Fandango. As an actor, John can be seen in Zero Charisma, Hidden America With Jonah Ray, and The Suplex Duplex Complex. He writes and performs sketch comedy regularly at The New Movement Theater. John currently lives in Austin with his beloved comic book collection and a cat named after Peter Cushing.

TRUNK – LOCKED IN MOVIE REVIEW

Trunk – Locked In is a new thriller streaming on Amazon Prime Video. A German film, this movie is relentless in its pacing. Right out of the gate we meet Malina, in a trunk, dazed and confused. Someone has abducted her for reasons that are unclear but through a bunch of visuals, a cell phone, and her wits, Malina starts to figure out the puzzle. This movie is a tight 90 minutes and doesn’t let up for a moment. It’s not perfect, but what it lacks visually is made up for with decent storytelling. Shout out to the SFX department, there’s some really good practical effects in this. So let’s hang out with Mike and Chad while they try to rescue Melina out of another trunk so she can partake in this review.

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). HAZBIN HOTEL SERIES REVIEW

We’re all sinners, there is no denying that. Some of us commit little sins, like rooting for the Dallas Cowboys or lying to our spouses about diet and exercise. Others commit inhuman atrocities like murder and hosting a podcast. Sure, there’s always deathbed repentance to get away in the nick of time, but what about the possibility of sudden death? Damned to hell you’ll be surrounded by demons, carnage, infernal flames, and catchy AF musical numbers. This is kinda like what the new Amazon Prime Video show Hazbin Hotel is like. The Princess of Hell, Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen), is the daughter of Lucifer and Lilith. Her parents may be estranged but the residents of her hotel are even stranger. Demons, sinners, lowlifes, and monsters come to the hotel to rehabilitate and possibly be redeemed. You’ve got Sir Pentious (Alex Brightman) a steampunk inventor with egg minions. Angel Dust (Blake Roman) Hell’s hottest porn star. Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz) Charlie’s girlfriend with a secret past, and a bartending, winged, alcoholic cat named Hust (Keith David) Why redemption after death? Hell’s population is growing ever higher so Heaven’s solution to keep the numbers down is to descend once a year and exterminate souls at random, led by the most self-righteous prick of them all, Adam (also Alex Brightman). Bradly, the rock’n front man, composes this damned episode with back-hellions Harmony and Jordan. They discuss the music, the punnery, and the spectacle of hell’s hottest YouTube pilot turned into a full streaming series.

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience.
