HIT MAN MOVIE REVIEW

Director Richard Linklater is a director who pretty much always turns out a good film, even if it’s not terribly populist entertainment. Hit Man certainly isn’t for the kids, but it’s surprising that Netflix buried its theatrical run considering how endearing the film really is, not to mention the star vehicle that Glen Powell has been waiting for. He plays Gary Johnson, a nerdy philosophy teacher who moonlights on the side for the police as a tech guy. When their lead undercover operative who does their stings gets suspended, Gary is asked to fill in, playing the part of a prospective hit man interviewing a ‘client’ looking to kill someone. Turns out, he takes to the role with aplomb, researching each new ‘client’ and becoming the hit man caricature he thinks they would expect. When he makes a decision to let one young woman (Adria Arjona) off the hook, convincing her to seek help rather than to kill her abusive husband, it eventually leads to them meeting again, falling hard for each other…only he still has to pretend to be the cool as ice hit man. And things get more complicated from there. Chris, Alan, and Mike really dug the heck out of this new film and since you probably can’t see it at a theater with an appreciative audience the way the film deserves, at least check it out on Netflix.

BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE MOVIE REVIEW

The bad boys return for this fourth movie (shouldn’t they have saved “for life” for this one) from the same director/writers as the previous entry. This time, Mike (Will Smith) is tying the knot with the beautiful Christine (Melanie Liburd) and it’s a lovely wedding except that Marcus (Martin Lawrence) has cardiac arrest and dies. Now, if that was more permanent we probably would have enjoyed this film more, but no. After a brief ‘it’s not your time yet’ meet with heavenly dead captain Joey Pants, Marcus comes back certain that nothing (yet) can kill him. Meanwhile, Mike is having hesitation problems due to panic attacks. So, the roles are switched, ya see? Sigh. Oh, yeah, there’s a plot too. Baddies make it look like their old captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano) was dirty and then that Mike and Marcus were dirty as well, so they gotta be on the run along with Mike’s son (who was one of the bad guys in the last film) to prove their innocence and stop the baddies before they get to their families. There’s a lot of stuff going on in this entry and most of it is REALLY dumb, so let’s hope you enjoy the mugging of Martin Lawrence more that Chris does if you see this film. Chris’s fervent disappointment is only countered by the slightly less cynical thoughts of Wright, and then there’s Alan and Nathan who I guess sorta dug it? No accounting for taste.

DEAD BOY DETECTIVES SERIES REVIEW

This new Netflix series is based on the Neil Gaiman/Matt Wagner comic books, which are themselves spin-offs of The Sandman (and some cameo casting establishes that the same is true of the show). Dead Boy Detectives is the story of Edwin and Charles, two youths cut dead in their prime, stuck between worlds, and their only motivation in (after) life is to solve mysteries for other ghosts. They’re joined by Crystal, who can speak to the dead but has lost all her memories after a demon possession and the demon wants her back. The show plays like a “Monster of the week” while being geared towards young adults/teens. Though at first glance… most of the “teenagers” cast for this show probably are not on their parent’s insurance policies anymore… Besides a few fumbles, the show does a very good job of staying scary for a younger audience. Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

IN A VIOLENT NATURE MOVIE REVIEW

What do you get when you combine Friday the 13th, the serene cinematography of Terrence Malick, and the brooding dread of It Follows? Chris Nash’s In a Violent Nature of course! The film, literally, follows the undead murderer Johnny on a slow and methodical rampage through the woods. He encounters various people through his search for a locket that belongs to him to keep his soul at rest. What In a Violent Nature excels at is the pacing, as Johnny hunts for prey and executes incredibly graphic and gnarly kills. There is something oddly peaceful as the audience watches Johnny trudge through the forest and then the film ratchets up the tension to 11 once he spots his next victim. Listen as Wright, Mike, and Drew discuss the new Shudder release and if In a Violent Nature sticks the landing with its methodical approach to a slasher flick.

ATLAS MOVIE REVIEW

Atlas Shepherd (Jennifer Lopez), is an analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence. She has committed her life to Blade Runn-er-um-searching for fugitive AI terrorists, specifically Harlan (Simu Liu), the AI who gained sentience 28 years ago and led a robot rebellion that left 3 million Earthlings dead before military forces sent Harlan fleeing into outer space. Decades later, one of Harlan’s agents is captured and interrogated by Atlas. She discovers that the robot war monger has escaped to a planet in the Andromeda Galaxy and insists that she accompany the military mission to find and capture the monster. Upon arriving on the planet, Atlas is forced to trust an AI mech suit named Smith in order to survive the harsh conditions of the planet and somehow hunt down her archenemy. It’s your classic Asimov inspired tale of sentient robots realising the best way to save humanity from itself is to whip it out, and only one woman can stop the end of all mankind. T.C., Rae, and Neil gather in the One Of Us/Tyrell Corporation HQ to suss out the good, the bad, and the derivative of this new Netflix/J.Lo production.

FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA MOVIE REVIEW

I don’t think anyone could have even begun to imagine back in 1979 when the original Mad Max was released that this series would go on for decades (albeit with only five movies thus far) and become what it is now: arguably THE event movie of the year. Certainly a lot of this has to do with the unexpectedly gigantic success of the film Furiosa serves as a prequel to, 2015’s Fury Road. But George Miller continuing with stories in this universe has proven to be a smart move, as all of them have received either largely or overwhelming praise. No different is this latest entry. The story takes Charlize Theron’s character from Fury Road and goes back to detail her origins, first played as a very young girl by Alyla Brown, and then as a young woman by Anya Taylor-Joy. We see her ripped from her hidden oasis of a settlement by marauders, led by the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and then eventually ending up with Immortan Joe in his all but impregnable mountain fortress. Along the way we see her use her wits and eventually her fighting skills, to survive what the wasteland throws at her in a quest for revenge against Dementus. Chris, Wright, Ben, and Mike take on this latest chapter of the apocalypse and realize they’d die very quickly in the real thing.

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. TALES OF THE EMPIRE SERIES REVIEW

Following in the steps of Tales of the Jedi, which told the tales of Count Dooku and Ahsoka Tano in the prequel era, Tales of the Empire offers us another point of view. After losing everything, young Morgan Elsbeth (who we were introduced to in the Ahsoka series as a Night Sister of Dathomir and a zealot of Grand Admiral Thrawn), navigates the expanding Imperial world toward a path of vengeance. Meanwhile, former Jedi Barriss Offee, who we last saw betray the Jedi and locked away for her treason at the end of The Clone Wars Season 5, is recruited into the Inquisitors and does what she must to survive a rapidly changing galaxy. This miniseries shows us the choices these women make and how they define their destinies. This continues the tradition of Dave Filoni improving upon every faucet of the prequels and building the Star Wars galaxy and franchise into a much more complex and extraordinary tapestry. Melina, Bradly, and T.C. gather in the One Of Us Jedi Counsel Chambers to shower this series with praise and discuss the nuances of what it accomplishes.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. X-MEN ’97 SERIES REVIEW

In the late fall of 1992 after a previous failed pilot, the X-Men animated series hit the airwaves, ushering in a new phase of animated Marvel cartoons. Despite being plagued with production, budget, and time constraints it remained popular enough to last until 1997. A few years later, X-Men the movie was released giving X-Men fans a new era of live action adventures. Then the MCU entertainment juggernaut came along, reshaped superhero movies, and renegotiated rights for popular characters held by other corporations. Once Spiderman swung into The Avengers, it was only a matter of time before people began calling for Disney/Marvel to bring in the X-Men. And Disney finally answered that call by restarting the X-Men animated series, setting it in 1997, and picking up where the series left off. Was it still going to have the cool opening? The same character actors? Was it just meant to collect nostalgia bucks? Wright takes Bradley and Lewayne along on this little trip down memory lane to see if the X-Men animated series holds up, or if we should keep our fingers crossed for whatever live-action X-Men movies get released with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and some other people with superpowers. Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

TRASH IN THE CAN: THE KILLER EYE

When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 340: DIE FOR DIGITAL NOISE

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
