REBEL RIDGE MOVIE REVIEW

Nothing like a good ol’ fashioned solid action flick. Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room) is back with his newest film, Rebel Ridge, starring Aaron Pierre, AnnaSophia Robb, and Don Johnson. We meet Pierre’s character Terry riding his bike down a long country road where he’s suddenly run off the road by two local cops. They search him, and while Terry is being totally compliant, they steal his $35,000 in cash. There is an odd law in place where these cops are legally in the right to take Terry’s money and leave him with nothing. Terry doesn’t take that laying down and heads to the local courthouse where he meets Robb’s character Summer. He pleads with them to give him time to find more money since he needs it to get his cousin out of jail before he heads to the state prison. Terry’s only option is to take the money back and head to the police station where he meets Johnson’s Chief Sandy. Sandy isn’t having any of Terry’s pleas, but in their brief standoff in front of the station the remaining officer quickly discovers who Terry really is. The ultimate badass! This is how Saulnier plays his hand with the film; steady and then he moves it into being a terrific action/thriller. Listen as Wright, Sarah Jane, and Ryan discuss their admiration for Rebel Ridge and how it’s a great new chapter for Saulnier’s already incredible filmography.

He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. THE 4:30 MOVIE FILM REVIEW

Kevin Smith is one of the defining Gen X filmmakers. Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy inspired countless storytellers from the 90’s to today. He’s also the guy who made Cop Out and Yoga Hosers. The guy’s had a mixed bag of a career. So, it comes as a wonderful surprise to Mike, Ryan, and T.C. that after over a decade of his “for fans only” movies, Smith appears to have made an actual film again. This semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film tells the story of Brian David, a kid in love with two things: movies and Melody Barnegat. After botching his chance to get to second base last summer, Brian finally works up the nerve to ask her to a movie. He and his two best friends, sex obsessed cool guy Burny, and mom bacon holding dweeby third man Belly, spend all afternoon at the local cineplex in anticipation of the 4:30 date. This is a day in the life of movie obsessed kids in 1986 Jersey and one of Smiths best works.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. SPEAK NO EVIL MOVIE REVIEW

The Danish horror film Speak No Evil was much discussed in horror circles as being one of the bleakest and most frightening films of 2022. Now here comes Blumhouse Films to soften it up for American audiences. And while there is no denying that they did exactly that, is it such a bad thing? Ben (Scoot McNairy) and Louise (Mackenzie Davis) are Americans who have recently moved to London with their pre-teen daughter Agnes. While on vacation in Tuscany, they hit it off with another couple, Paddy (James McAvoy) and Ciara (Aisling Franciosi) who invite them to come spend a week with them at their farmhouse out in the country. At first, everything seems fine-ish. There’s the usual misunderstandings and awkward moments, but nothing to panic about. But soon, things start appearing to be WAY more off than anyone could reasonably be asked to put up with. And Paddy and Ciara are just getting started. Chris, Wright, Kate, and Nathan get into this new horror/thriller, discuss the differences between it and the original, and how sometimes ‘fun’ is just as good as ‘punishing’ in horror and even sometimes, depending on yours tastes, much preferable.

Kate Chambers (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. MY OLD ASS MOVIE REVIEW

Elliott (Maisy Stella) has grown up in a beautiful lakeside town with her family, who grow cranberries there for a living. While there had been some expectation that she would continue on in the family business at some point, she has since made clear that she has no interest. Soon to leave for college, she organizes on her 18th birthday a gathering of her and her two best friends on a small island in the lake to camp out and take magic mushrooms. While her friends have more of the traditional experience, nothing seems to be happening until all of the sudden, BOOM: there’s Aubrey Plaza. The older woman claims to be Elliott at age 39 and that they can communicate because of the drugs. After a somewhat disappointing but still kinda cool night of stern warnings from older Elliott, especially to ‘stay away from Chad’, older Elliott is gone in the morning. But only sorta, as before she disappears, she puts her phone number in young Elliott’s phone and guess what? Well, you know. And it’s not long before Elliott meets Chad (Percy Hynes White) which would be a total meet-cute because he’s thoroughly likable and hot, except A: she’s been warned and B: up until Chad, Elliott considered herself to be gay. It sounds like there’s a lot more plot going on here than there really is, but what My Old Ass does have is charm a-plenty and a smart, if not especially thorough, script. Chris, Wright, Nathan, and Alan discuss the film and Chris wonders if he should try to visit the 39 year old version of himself with warnings, but realizes he probably wouldn’t have enough time to get through all of them.

THE DECAMERON SERIES REVIEW

In 1384 the deadliest pandemic in human history known as the black death did not discriminate. All classes, creeds and sexes fell prey as the plague ravaged Europe, caring not for borders or alliances. What could one do to survive such a horror? If you were wealthy enough, you would take a vacation and throw a wedding party of course. Netflix presents creator Kathleen Jordan’s adaptation of the timeless Italian short story collection classic The Decameron. Pampinea (Zosia Mamet) has been called to the Villa de Valentino to marry the lord of the estate. With the dowry and their servant Misia (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) they arrive only to find Lord Valentino’s most loyal servant Sirisco (Tony Hale) assuring them that Lord Valentino has stepped out but should be back any day now. As more guests arrive, the absence of the lord is quite troubling. Among the guests are a self proclaimed military genius, historical prodigy, and total hypochondriac Tinadro (Douggie McMeekin), his total smoke show Doctor Dioneo (Amar Chadha-Patel), Neifile (Lou Gala) and her spouse Panfilo (Karan Gill), Licisa (Tanya Reynolds) the servant girl posing as her own mistress and her actual mistress Filomena (Jessica Plummer), and more. Together they plot, scheme, lust, murder, and generally act as if there wasn’t a plague encroaching that will likely kill them all. A heavily meditative and often hilarious examination of class, religion, and sex in times of great turmoil and strife. Bradly and Jena discuss the lasting relevance in this ten episode dark comedy series.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. JACKPOT! MOVIE REVIEW

In the dystopian future of 2030, former child actor, Katie Kim (Awkwafina), is trying to restart her career in Hollywood. After unknowingly entering and winning the California Grand Lottery, Katie finds herself in a fight for her life as everyone in the city, from biker gangs to yoga teachers, comes out of the woodwork to kill her for that winning ticket. Enter freelance Lottery protection agent Noel Cassidy (John Cena), who, after negotiating a contract for 10% of the earnings, works to keep the murderous citizens of Los Angeles at bay until the night falls, and the money will officially be hers. If Katie can survive that long. It’s The Purge, but comedy. Mindy, Kim, and Mike place their bets on this Paul Feig directed film to decide whether they’ve won the grand prize, or if it’s just a scratch off. So finish that last bite of Pasta Squares, and check out their review.

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). INCOMING MOVIE REVIEW

The teen sex comedy genre has had some truly classic entries in the past couple of decades, like Dazed and Confused, Can’t Hardly Wait, American Pie and Superbad. These movies focus on the coming-of-age experiences of teenagers, often revolving around high school and that one night where everything goes wrong before it all goes oh-so-right for our young protagonists. These films mix humor with the awkward, embarrassing, and sometimes raunchy moments of cringey adolescence, with plenty of sex, drugs, drinking, and kick ass soundtracks that encapsulate the era of their making. They are both time capsules for those who look back, and formative experiences for the kids who see them in the moments they hit the pop culture zeitgeist. Incoming is not one of these movies. It’s not even close to being in any of those categories, nor will it be formative for anyone who sees it, because it is abundantly clear that the people who made this movie have no idea what Gen Z is doing in their teenage journeys through this current moment in time. Try as it might, watching high school freshman Benj (Mason Thames) and his friends eagerly try to reinvent themselves in the first week of high school, and fumble their ways through one special night does not come close to being in the same league or grade as any of the aforementioned teen sex romps. And so, Melina, Jordan, and T.C. have watched this so you don’t have to.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 345: TAKE THE TWISTER CHALLENGE

John and Chris review a really big stack this week of home releases. Some good. Some bad. Some EXTREMELY bad. And some surprisingly wonderful. From the film that set the standard for hitman movies, to that 90s Gene Hackman thriller on a train you never saw (but should have). From an auteur version of Shakespeare that definitely should be a lot better, to one of the best remastered wonderfully dumb movies ever, we’ve got quite the show for you.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can)

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Previously guested on podcasts Blood Over Texas, Threequel Club, Trash in the Can, Retro Movie Roundtable, and Nerds with Mics.
