SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE REVIEW

The story of Saturday Night Live’s beginnings is one of a show hindered by chaotic creatives, unconvinced executives, drugs, sex, and one very beleaguered but determined showrunner. Director Jason Reitman brings us the story of the 90 minutes before SNL went live for the first time and how close it came to not actually happening. The film mainly follows Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LaBelle) as he runs around the sound stages while spinning umpteen barely spinning plates as everything that can go wrong, seems to go wrong. With an enormous cast representing all the SNL players, writers, and guests, Reitman creates a Sorkin-esque carnival of chaos that hit the right spot with Chris and Wright who give their review here for Saturday Night.

ANORA MOVIE REVIEW

Writer/director Sean Baker hits Fantastic Fest with the Palme d’Or winner at Cannes this year, Anora. Ani (Mikey Madison) is a stripper whose life in New York City is filled with parties, sex, and fun. Because she can speak Russian, her boss connects her with a young Russian son of an oligarch who wants to purchase her services exclusively for a week. She is swept off her feet by the sex, crazy parties, and while in Vegas, they do what young people driven by love/lust and fully in the moment do: they get married. Unfortunately, his VERY wealthy family is not thrilled about the situation and is going to do whatever they can to fix the problem. But they are not ready for Ani. Chris and Wright were swept away by this movie and agree with the Cannes folks for their good taste (this time) in their review.

TERRIFIER 3 MOVIE REVIEW

One of the best things about Fantastic Fest is how there’s something very nichey for every taste. And if your taste runs to unbelievably explicit gore and goofy clown killers, then you already know all about director/writer Damien Leone’s Terrifier series. The third entry dips into the beloved subgenre of Xmas horror as Art The Clown (somehow) returns and begins his trail of carnage all over again, as he closes in on the survivors from Terrifier 2 (who know that this shit ain’t over yet). Diving deeper into the crazed mythology, such as it is, and giving Art a sidekick monster, Terrifier 3 delivers what the gorehounds came for. Chris and Wright professionally hold back their gag reflexes as they rave about Terrifier 3.

THE RULE OF JENNY PEN MOVIE REVIEW

John Lithgow and Geoffrey Rush play two men in a nursing home who go to war with each other. That’s certainly enough of a selling point alone for the Fantastic Fest film, The Rule of Jenny Pen. But the film we saw wasn’t exactly what we expected. Rush plays a judge who has a stroke and is VERY upset that he has to be in this care center. He’s deeply unpleasant, arrogant, and not exactly out to make friends at what he thinks is a brief healthcare stopover in his life. John Lithgow is a longtime resident who scares all the other people who live there with his malicious secret attacks on them and his creepy hand puppet, Jenny Pen. Rush refuses to kowtow to this ridiculous man, having no idea how dangerous he really is. Chris and Wright started off their FF in person experience with The Rule of Jenny Pen and we tell you what we thought.

Párvulos Movie Review

Mexican director Isaac Ezban returns to Fantastic Fest this year with his new post-zombie-apocalypse film Párvulos. The story centers around a house in the middle of nowhere where a teen boy and his two much younger brothers eke out a scant survival. Both parents are gone, ostensibly dead but it appears as if they don’t know for sure. They hunt simple game, like domesticated dogs who wander about ownerless, frogs, and the like, while dodging any other survivors and maybe hoping the government will come up with a cure at some point? But when a young girl survivor makes it past their defenses and maybe somewhat into their trust, how long before she finds out what they’re keeping in the basement? WHAT HAPPENED TO DOROTHY BELL? MOVIE REVIEW

Found footage horror isn’t always everyone’s favorite, but if it’s playing at Fantastic Fest, it generally is better than most. Such is the case for What Happened to Dorothy Bell? written and directed by Danny Villanueva Jr. The film follows Ozzie (Asya Meadows) who has lost much of the memory of her childhood when her beloved librarian grandmother Dorothy Bell suddenly went haywire and stabbed her multiple times. Seeking out the library where she worked, and with the help of a friendly custodian, she begins her investigation only to realize some family stories are best left alone. With some solid scares What Happened to Dorothy Bell? set the bar as the creepy film to beat this year at Fantastic Fest for Chris and Wright.

BOOKWORM MOVIE REVIEW

You just can’t keep Elijah Wood away from New Zealand. And who can blame him? It’s goddamn gorgeous. He gets to revisit the scenic countryside in his second collaboration with director Ant Timpson, Bookworm. The tale starts with Mildred (Nell Fisher) and her mom who don’t get along well. Mildred lives a life in books and her mom, not so much. When there’s a household accident which puts her mother in a coma, out of nowhere comes her biological father from the States who she’s never met, Strawn (Elijah Wood). He’s an ‘illusionist’ who seems to have missed his shot at the big time and Mildred is not impressed. She guilts him into taking her on a camping trip in pursuit of the rumored Canterbury Panther, for which a local newspaper promises 50,000 dollars for a picture of. These two have little in common, and like with most things, Mildred is just not having it, especially with Strawn’s need to get her approval, if not her affection for him as a father figure. But, you know how trips into the wild for these types go. It will go terribly wrong and by going that wrong, it’ll go right. Chris and Wright review Bookworm at Fantastic Fest 2024!

U ARE THE UNIVERSE MOVIE REVIEW

What would you do if you were an astronaut on a deep space mission and discovered the Earth had blown up? If you were Ukrainian space trucker Andriy, then probably not much different. You’d continue to tolerate terrible dad jokes from your onboard robot trying to cheer you up, listen to records, sleep a lot, the usual. But when he gets a signal from one other survivor of the destruction of humanity, a French scientist named Catherine orbiting a planet far away from him, he starts to realize that he actually does need people and that he’d do anything to keep her ship from crashing into the planet below. Chris and Wright discuss the Ukrainian sci-fi film U Are The Universe at Fantastic Fest 2024!

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). TIME BANDITS SERIES REVIEW

Remember as a kid when it was super cool to have a favorite dinosaur? When day-dreaming of sailing the world with vikings like Leif Erikson was a perfectly normal and healthy thing to do? When you could tell the difference between Greek and Roman history without extra scrutiny? Kevin (Kal-El Tuck) will never have those memories. Apple Plus presents a ten episode television series based on the film by Terry Gilliam, Time Bandits. The kids at school, his little sister, and even his own parents all mock Kevin relentlessly for having an encyclopedic knowledge and curiosity regarding the history of our world. One night, Kevin’s wardrobe goes full TARDIS on him and he ends up on the run with a group of bandits that can traverse through time and space through portals they find with a map stolen from “The Supreme Being” (Taika Waititi). The unofficial leader of the bandits Penelope (Lisa Kudrow) decides Kevin might possibly be useful with his vast knowledge of historical events. Perhaps his brain can be put to good use in stealing valuable stuff. The Supreme Being is livid his map is missing and sends a heavenly host to purse the bandits. However it’s not just Heaven on Kevin’s tail. Pure Evil (Jemaine Clement) also wants the power of the map to send the entire universe into an unending age of chaos. Bradly, Neil, and Harmoni discuss the foundation of the series with the classic film that it’s based on, pacing and character motivation in a show about time, and Harmoni and Neil show great patience and compassion as Bradly tries to will Alan Rickman back into our existence.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

THE SUBSTANCE MOVIE REVIEW

We’ve never seen Demi Moore like this before. Coralie Fargeat’s, director of Revenge, second feature film The Substance is a wild combination of David Cronenberg’s body-horror and Frank Henenlotter’s exploitation sensibilities. Demi Moore plays Elizabeth Sparkle, whose stardom has faded from Hollywood icon to hosting a tv workout show ala Jane Fonda. Through a severe accident, she is presented a solution to her problems: The Substance. It is a black-market drug that can replicate your cells and creates a younger, better version of yourself. Once Sparkle decides to use the drug through a series of cryptic directions, the metamorphosis into her younger self is horrific to say the least. As older Elizabeth sleeps for the next 7 days, the younger version of her “Sue” is born, played here by Margaret Qualley. Sue then takes over Sparkle’s life and reclaims her identity, but at a weekly cost. Much like other horror films, there are rules to making a deal with the devil. Sue and Elizabeth need to trade places every week or they face gruesome consequences. The TV studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid), doesn’t make either of their lives any easier by pushing his grotesquely toxic masculinity to darkly humorous effect. Fargeat’s approach is kinetic, disgusting, and often very funny. The Substance is a standout mainly due to Moore and Qualley’s incredible performances; they do not hold anything back. Listen as Wright, Chris, Marco, and Frank discuss if The Substance is the new “no holds barred” horror hit or if its destined to only become a midnight cult classic.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old.
