A COMPLETE UNKNOWN MOVIE REVIEW

Director James Mangold more or less made the film that defined all the tropes of the musical biopic with his 2005 film about Johnny Cash, Walk The Line. Said tropes than thoroughly and perfectly satirized in 2007’s Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Naturally, many were wary when Mangold was put at the helm of A Complete Unknown, following a young Bob Dylan, but we needn’t have feared. I suspect Mangold laughed at Walk Hard as well. Timothée Chalamet takes on the role of the legendary musician and he is presented as largely a cypher. As he says at one point in the film when someone asks what he wants, “I want to be a musician” and that’s largely what we need to know about him here. A Complete Unknown is really an ensemble film about the time and how Dylan first became the hero of folk music, and then its villain. Most of the story is really expressed through the strong performances of the supporting cast, reacting to all the shake-ups and to Dylan’s frustratingly unknowable facade. Chris, Wright, Marco, and Mike tune up their guitars and strum out a four-part harmony review of A Complete Unknown. Who knew we would get not one but two really great musician biopics this year? We did not have that on our bingo cards.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). KRAVEN THE HUNTER MOVIE REVIEW

Let us raise a glass to the end of the Sony era of Spider-man spinoff films that no one asked for. Morbius, Madam Web, and the Venom movies, have had a very rocky history with critics and their latest, Kraven the Hunter, is no different. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular hunter who is on a convoluted quest to take out as many evil doers as he can with his supernatural “animal” powers. We first meet Kraven as a young boy along with his meek brother (later played by Fred Hechinger) as they’re presented with terrible news by their father (Russell Crowe) that their mother has died. Wipe away those tears though, because Crowe has an excellent idea to go hunting for a lion! As they’re hunting the lion, young Kraven is attacked. Through a mystical potion and the lion’s blood, he now has superhuman powers that he uses to fight crime across the world. If you have any idea who Kraven is from the comics, you would know that he’s a ruthless Spider-man villain and famed murderous killer. Why Sony decided to make him more of an anti-hero befuddles us and the entire audience. We’re also introduced to Calypso (Ariana DeBose) who befriends Kraven in his journey of bloody revenge, The Rhino (Alessandro Nivola) who becomes Kraven’s main foil and completely understood the assignment, and The Foreigner (Christopher Abbott) who…um…we’re still trying to figure out his powers. The script and line delivery is next level embarrassing and no one in the film is able to elevate this movie to even b-movie status. Listen as Wright, Kim, and Spider-Mike try to understand the slightest bit about J.C. Chandor’s Kraven the Hunter!

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. He lives in Austin with his beloved Dachshund-Maltese and trusted sidekick, Dean. He can also be heard on RageSelect. He can be found on Twitter and Instagram.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

THE FRANCHISE SERIES REVIEW

Making a movie involves hundreds of jobs, from key grips to craft services, actors to directors, producers to a marketing team, and don’t even get me started on the writer’s room. Movie magic is a lot less whimsy and wonder and a lot more delegating unforeseen problems to the assistant to the best person for the job. The Franchise isn’t just a series about making a big summer blockbuster but rather a show about making a film that fits perfectly into a run of films ala the current trend of the on-going film franchise universe. The show stars Himesh Patel as Daniel, the first assistant director on set of Maximum Studios’ superhero film, Tecto: Eye of the Storm. The titular character is played by self-conscious former child TV star Adam (Billy Magnussen) who feels no one takes him seriously, especially co-star Peter (Richard E. Grant). Director Eric (Daniel Brühl) has a vision of a man who can control the earth itself but loses the most important person in the world to him. However, the studio head, Pat (Darren Goldstein), could care less about artistic visions and wants to make sure sponsors are satisfied and trending for the film is high. Daniel has to juggle the fragile egos of actors, troublesome set pieces, and out of left field studio notes to get the shoot completed by deadline. Bradly, Dogget, and Kim discuss their history with film franchise viewing and stare into the endless void of misery as the void stares back into them. JUROR #2 MOVIE REVIEW

Whenever a jury duty summons comes in, I’m annoyed, aren’t we all, but definitely not mad about it either. However, if I received this notice while my wife was enduring a second pregnancy in the third trimester, I’d be quite angry. Enter our protagonist Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult). A recovering alcoholic, Justin wants to prove that the dishonest and self sabotaging drunk he once was is a distant regret. He is appointed Juror #2 and eagerly awaits his chance to show his peers his newfound eagle scout levels of honour. There’s just one highly ethical and moral dilemma. As opening statements and evidence are presented by the prosecutor Faith Killebrew (Toni Collette), Justin begins to reminisce about the dark and stormy night in question, and how he may have been directly involved. Heralded as Clint Eastwood’s final film and with a widely criticized super-limited release by the dastardly David Zaslav, Juror #2 is a courtroom drama with an all-star ensemble. If it’s a final release by one of America’s greatest living filmmakers, it’s a good one. Bradly, Nate, and Marco deliberate the wrongs of studio heads writing off films to satisfy an insatiable bottom line, praise the character acting of J.K. Simmons, Zoey Deutch, Kiefer Sutherland, Leslie Bibb, and Cedric Yarbrough just to name a few, then close out the review with a special spoiler rant from legendary hot-take cinephile himself, Highly Suspect Nathan. May his takes burn as bright as the star Clint Eastwood has left in the Hollywood sky.

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

QUEER MOVIE REVIEW

Director Luca Guadagnino dives into the world of transgressive author William S Burroughs with his latest film, Queer. The story follows Burroughs, as his literary stand-in William Lee (Daniel Craig). The writer drinks his way through his days, living in Mexico, and looking for love. Well, sex anyway. He forms an irresistible attraction to a young man named Eugene (Drew Starkey) whose sexuality seems unclear. Eventually though, the two join (in multiple senses) and end up on an adventure to South America seeking a mysterious drug deep in the jungles that is rumored to give its users enhanced telepathy powers. Craig certainly gives the role his all and impressively so, but Chris, Wright, Marco, and Nathan thought ultimately Queer had mixed results.
