One booking? Two Bookings!? On the same high demand day in a highly desired venue!? Oh my medication! Presented by Amazon Prime and written and directed by R-comedy sensation Nicholas Stoller, You’re Cordially Invited to laugh along with SNL alum Will Ferrell and legally hilarious Reese Witherspoon. Jim (Ferrell) is a single father and long time widower who has shaped his entire life around being there for his daughter Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan). She surprises her father with her bae Oliver (Stony Blyden), hand-in-hand and ring on finger. Across the country, reality show producer Margot (Reese Witherspoon) is all about her career, but her truest love and passion is being the best big sister to Neve (Meredith Hagner). All little sisters eventually grow up, and Neve announces her engagement to Dixon (Jimmy Tatro) in front of big sister Margot, all her employees, and two-time Superbowl champion Peyton Manning. With their worlds suddenly changing and wedding dates approaching Margot and Jim, though unfortunately tragic circumstances, book the weddings on the same day. Refusing to change dates, both parties try to balance and manage the simultaneous weddings and hilarious hijinks ensue. Bradly, Drew, and Dogget discuss holy matrimonial cinema, the expertise of Reese and Will in R rated comedies, and Drew reminds Bradly that not all streaming services are called Netflix. Save the date and watch this one with someone special who has a sense of humour.

OLD GUY MOVIE REVIEW

An old hitman is tasked to train a young up and comer in the action comedy Old Guy written by Greg Johnson and directed by Simon West. Danny Dolinski (Christoph Waltz) has busted so many caps into so many of his targets for so many years that he’s got chronic pain in his wrist from all the recoil. As if carpal tunnel wasn’t bad enough, his killer-in-training, Wihlborg (Cooper Hoffman) doesn’t think he needs some ancient dinosaur teaching him old tricks. Anata (Lucy Liu) wants the two to just get along and envisions a future with Dolinski if he manages to live past his usefulness. As Dolinski begins to recognize the potential in young Wihlborg he begins to question if he’s really training a future ace assassin or a permanent replacement. Bradly, Mike, and Lewayne pull out the hit list of who’s who on the kill or be killed action comedy scene to see how Old Guy stacks up with past hits. Also they discuss their own experiences with the most frightening killer of all, time.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). He resides in Austin, Texas, and can be followed on the Instamagrams at @ohheyitsmikejm.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

THE MONKEY MOVIE REVIEW

Director/writer Osgood Perkins is on a roll. Not long after making the horror movie everyone was talking about (good or bad) Longlegs, Perkins is back already with an adaptation of the Stephen King story The Monkey, but this time he’s playing with splatstick comedy-horror. Theo James plays twin brothers Hal and Billy (initially played by Christian Convery when they are boys). After a brief intro scene with their father (Adam Scott) trying to unload the titular toy monkey to a pawn shop with bloody results, we go to some time later. The teen brothers are being raised by their single mother (Tatiana Maslany). Hal is a bit of a sensitive soul but Billy is a bully and his main target is his own brother. They find among their father’s things the toy monkey and before you know it, there are deaths aplenty, as anytime you wind up the monkey with his key, somebody is gonna get it, and get it hard. Unfortunately for anyone in possession of it, there’s no way to aim the thing. The brothers realize they need to dispose of it and, seemingly, succeed. Flash to 25 years later: Hal is a traumatized loner, still afraid the monkey will somehow reappear and start the killings up again. Somehow, he made enough of a connection with someone to have a kid along the way. His son is now an older teen and he is about to completely lose custody, but he has one week to spend with his child who he barely knows. So of course, suddenly during their week, the bizarre deaths start up again. Hal knows it must be tied to the Monkey, but who is turning the key? Chris, Nathan, Mike, and Wright left the theater covered in gore but laughing about it, even if the movie wasn’t nearly as good as we’d hoped, coming from a new horror maestro like Perkins.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

PADDINGTON IN PERU MOVIE REVIEW

If you’re slow to catch this train, Paddington 1 and 2 rank among the best children’s films ever made. If even Pedro Pascal and Nic Cage cry together about how wonderful they are, you can give them a shot. So, when the most adorable bear ever returns for a third film, we here at One Of Us aren’t afraid to admit that we were very excited to see him come back. Paddington in Peru follows the seemingly growth-stunted bear and his adoptive family, the Browns, as they travel to Peru together to visit his Aunt Lucy. Lucy lives in the jungle in a Home for Retired Bears run by a gaggle of nuns led by the outrageously happy, Reverend Mother Clarissa (Olivia Colman). When the Browns arrive, Clarissa informs them that Lucy disappeared in the night to places unknown in the jungle. Paddington discovers in her room a map to an ancient standing stones ruin in the jungle and so, off they go. With the help of a riverboat captain (Antonio Banderas) and his daughter (Carla Tous), the dangerous journey begins that will take them to places that a proper English family is notably unsuited for, and it might just lead to the fabled City of Gold, El Dorado. Chris, Wright, Ben, and Marco get a little lost in the jungle on this one, but still think it’s an enjoyable romp in the probably never-ending IP of Paddington.

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD MOVIE REVIEW

Here we are at the 35th film in the MCU and the 4th Captain America film, albeit with a notable change. Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) once a partner to Steve Rogers, was chosen by him specifically to take on the mantle of Captain America, after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Sam questioned his worth, notably in the Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and again, here to some extent, but there seemed little doubt that super-soldier serum or not, Sam was the right choice to take up the mantle. It’s too bad Disney/Marvel doesn’t seem to think so, at least judging by the half-assedness of this film. After stopping the Serpent Society from selling a mystery item to a buyer who mysteriously chose to never show up, all sorts of things keep not adding up. Sam and his new Falcon, Joaquin Torres, are on the trail after a seeming attack on newly appointed President “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford, stepping in for William Hurt). His would-be assassins appear confused and don’t remember what happened, one of them being their old friend and original Captain America, Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly). Clearly, shenanigans of the Manchurian Candidate sort are afoot and with even the President’s actions suspect, it’s up to these two heroes to save the day. But who will save the audience from this terrible script? Chris, Marco, Frank, and Wright have chosen to accept this assignment.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

LOVE HURTS MOVIE REVIEW

It was so great to see the return of actor Ke Huy Quan in the sublime Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2022. Having retired from acting for a very long time, Quan is known to Americans for his roles as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies. I swear I teared up watching interviews with him after the success of EEAAO, seeing how grateful he was for a chance to return and all the goodwill directed at him. And honestly…he deserves much better than Love Hurts. I know, I know, you want to believe this is good. So did we. But here we are. The movie follows Quan as Marvin, a popular and well-loved real estate agent. He even gets an award from his boss and mentor Cliff (a nice Goonies call-back with Sean Astin in the role). But his very different past comes back to haunt him. He used to be an assassin for a crime organization run by his brother (Daniel Wu) and he was the deadliest of killers. Unfortunately, the event that caused him to quit the life, a decision to spare the life of another (Ariana DeBose), has blown up his new existence when his brother discovers that the person he was supposed to kill is still alive. The movie had Quan escaping and beating the tar out of a parade of other killers as he tries to keep it all from destroying his new life, and protecting the stubborn woman whose life he spared while not being able to admit that he loves her. Chris, Wright, Kate, and Marco had high hopes, as did we all, but Love Hurts, hurts. And not in the good way.

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. In her spare time, you can find her either down at the barn with her noble steed Jazz, watching as many movies as possible (often at work), cuddling with her pair of black cats and writing horror scripts, or nursing a beer in any available body of water… or doing Duolingo, where she’s currently on a 1000+ day streak.

STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW SERIES REVIEW

The One Of Us Jedi Counsel of Melina, Marco, and T.C. gather to discuss the newest entry into the Star Wars franchise and are gleefully pleased to see that building an entire series around the Amblin Entertainment model that gave us The Goonies, E.T., and the entire kids on (speeder) bikes subgenre can in fact inject some new and wonderful life into the galaxy far, far away. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew follows Wim, Fern, Neel, and KB: four kids from the hidden planet of At Attin who, after discovering an abandoned spaceship, find themselves lost in the vast and perilous galaxy. Guided by the enigmatic (and quite possibly fallen Jedi) Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), they encounter the most piratey of pirates in the stars, strange aliens, and dangerous places in their quest to return home. The series, set in the same post-Empire era as The Mandalorian, is a coming-of-age adventure that will satisfy fans of the Orig Trig, newcomers to the franchise, and perhaps even cynical long-time fans just hate watching every offering. Also, if you love Treasure Planet, this one’s for you.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

BACK IN ACTION MOVIE REVIEW

Homer Simpson once said “Well, guess what, cool people! Parents are supposed to be lame. That’s so their kids have something to rebel against and be cool long enough to get married and have kids for whom they are lame. It’s nature’s way.” Netflix presents the espionage action comedy Back in Action featuring Jamie Foxx and the return of comedy bombshell and Charlie’s Angel, Cameron Diaz. Matt (Foxx) and Emily (Diaz) are the proud parents of two teens named Alice (McKenna Roberts) and Leo (Rylan Jackson). Matt and Emily have dull family movie nights in between routine PTA meetings and very boring lectures about preparing for your future and cringe dad jokes. When their former friend and employer Chuck (Kyle Chandler) pays them an unexpected visit, Alice and Leo discover that their dork-ass parents are actually Bond-level super spies. Bradly, Frank, and Jena gather the intel on Diaz’s decade-long disappearance and determine if her long awaited return is worth the straight to streaming tag. Also, they pin straight-to-streaming spy scripts against one another while having a laugh celebrating the long lasting cameo phase of Glenn Close’s career. Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. HEART EYES MOVIE REVIEW

In continuing the ever-meta-ning of the horror-comedy genre, as we go deeper into the rabbit-hole of self-referentialism and winking at the audience, some of the entries have become absurdly lazy. Fortunately, one of the brightest lights in the field, Christopher Landon, is one of the writers of Heart Eyes and if you’ve seen his previous films (Freaky, Happy Death Day(s)) then it should be an incentive to give this new film a chance, as his fingerprints are all over it. Directed by another one-to-watch Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within), this rom-com that happens to have a slasher movie chasing it around, hits most of the right notes. Ally (Olivia Holt) works for an advertising agency and she’s in trouble as her latest campaign surrounding doomed lovers isn’t playing well due to the yearly antics of the Heart Eyes killer. The masked murderer only kills happy couples and has been amping up each year, killing more and more in a different city each time. Now that they’ve come to Ally’s home town of Seattle, her job might be in trouble. She is teamed up with advertising wunderkind Jay (Mason Gooding) who is problem for her because A: she’s actually super-cynical about romance and that makes her job pretty hard for her and B: Jay makes her weak at the knees. After a ‘making the ex-boyfriend jealous’ impromptu kiss is seen by Heart Eyes, the not-a-couple is targeted by the killer. Even as they run while trying to protest they’re not a thing, it’s clear they’re starting to fall for each other. Chris, Ben, Marco, and Wright tear into this fun and insanely gorey romp and declare it this year’s February surprise.
