Highly Suspect Reviews: The Ballad of Wallace Island

The Ballad of Wallace Island Movie Review

THE BALLAD OF WALLACE ISLAND MOVIE REVIEW

Imagine you had more money than you knew what to do with that came upon you like unexpected manna from heaven. After you had traveled the world, bought your perfect house on your perfect island, what then? If you’re Charles (Tim Key) you make an offer to your favorite musical duo of all time to come play a private concert just for you. Unfortunately for Herb (Tom Basden) and Nell (Carey Mulligan), they haven’t seen each other in nine years and they left their relationship and musical partnership on not the best of terms. AND Herb didn’t know when he agreed to come out that Nell would be there as well. Their host Charles, as he also is putting them up in his house, is enchanted with them being there. Nothing it seems can quench his excitement, but Herb is a grumpy gus with deep trauma leftover from the former collaboration and in doesn’t help that Nell is newly married and has brought her new husband along for the trip. Chris, Beau, Wright, and Marco take a look at the The Ballad of Wallace Island and reflect on the effectiveness of simple charm when it’s being doled out by a British rural comedy.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Screener Squad: Severance Season 2

Severance Season 2 review

SEVERANCE SEASON 2 REVIEW

The mysterious corporation called Lumon doing mysterious work involving a floor of “Severed” employees is back for season 2 of Severance on Apple TV Plus. Under the severed program, a mental division is created so that while at the office,  an employee has no memory of their outside life and vice-versa. The idea is that top secret information will remain as such and the stress of the grind will be a thing of the past. Mark (Adam Scott) has caused a lot of problems for Lumon including delaying the completion of the Cold Harbor project and causing a PR nightmare for the company by being one of four employees who’ve made contact with the outside world. Helena (Britt Lower) has discovered that her outie is not some kind of 24/7 gardening hobby enthusiast but rather one of the top administrators for the Lumon corporation. Dylan (Zach Cherry) has found out that he has a wife and kids and his outie is a bit of a sad sack with not much going on. Irving (John Turturro) has discovered his innie has been documenting and hiding sketches of weird Lumon behavior. Seth Milchick (Tramell Tillman), the new manager of the floor, must navigate the best way to keep the employees happy but break any rebellious spirit, so they will finish the grand and glorious works of the founder of Lumon, a cultish figure named Keir. Bradly, Neil, and Nate step through the looking glass and discuss the successes of season 2. They hand out a couple of Emmy predictions to the stellar cast while having a very in-depth discussion about the problems with water cooler mystery box shows that juggle too many toasters while standing in your mother’s childhood bathtub. If you think that’s weird, check out Severance on Apple TV+, but wait there’s more! Brown Coat subscribers and higher can access a Season 2 Spoiler review in our forums, use the link right here to access it.

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 354: THAT ORCA DESERVES HIS REVENGE, AND THOSE PEOPLE DESERVE TO DIE

Chris and Wright have a ton of goofy fun with this week’s stack of home releases. To what is probably the best of the Jaws rip-offs of the 70s (a low bar), to a horror movie where the joke is on you. From one of the best of the non-canon Sherlock Holmes movie adaptations, to a trio of 4k Tarantino greatness. Pour yourself a glass of whiskey, sit back, and enjoy these two going through Orca trauma.

Screener Squad: Ash

Ash Movie Review

ASH MOVIE REVIEW

Steven Wright once said “Right now I am having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before”. Now imagine this hilariously terrifying scenario in space, where no one can hear you reminisce! From musician and director Flying Lotus with a script written by Joni Remmler comes the SXSW Sci-Fi horror thriller sensation ASH. Riya (Eiza González) has no memories of the past couple of days but does remember her and a small crew were sent to a foreign planet to prepare the harsh alien terrain for a new colony of humans. Unable to access the logs and suffering from fuzzy memories of the gory deaths of her colleagues, Riya must put the pieces of her mind back together in order to solve the mystery of her mission’s purpose and find justice for her fallen friends. She meets a resident of the space station named Brion (Aaron Paul) who claims to know her but is also in the dark about what happened to the mission and what’s been unaliving the shipmates. Riya is reluctant to trust this mystery man and to be frank, he isn’t sure he can trust her. Bradly, Jordan, and Drew pierce the heavens to see the face of madness in Flying Lotus’ experimental mind trip with a far out score to accompany the space madness. It’s suspect or be suspected, remember the pain or forget the joy, kill or be killed… for science!

Highly Suspect Reviews: A Working Man

A Working Man movie review

A WORKING MAN REVIEW

Say what you will about this new found collaboration between David Ayer and Jason Statham, but they really know how to turn b-movie action plots into ridiculous and eccentric flicks. Jason Statham stars as Levon Cade who works as a foreman on a construction site run by mild mannered Michael Pena. Pena’s family is a part of the business as well and his daughter Jenny, played by Arianna Rivas, takes a shine to Cade’s “no bullshit” approach to tough situations. As Jenny is about to graduate high school and head off to college, she has one last hurrah with her girlfriends in downtown Chicago. They are stalked by a creepy couple looking to sex traffic young women and Jenny is snatched up. Pena pleads with Statham to save his girl, because of of course…Cade has a certain set of skills that can help save and bring back his daughter…he’s an ex-commando. With a script co-written by Sylvester Stallone & David Ayers, it’s hard to place when would’ve made sense. It reads like a dumb fun action movie from the 80’s, but it’s based on a book written in 2014; you can’t help but wonder why they made any of these weird plot decisions. As Cade tortures, beats, and kills his way through a slew of bad guys to find Jenny, you ultimately become bored with the mundane and uninspired action. You do get some flourishes of quirky weird characters, but it doesn’t add up to a satisfying experience unlike their previous collaboration The Beekeeper. Listen as Wright, Marco, and Ben try to make sense of Nathan’s defense of the movie and understand that they are all working men.

What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN: EP 1 – HUMORESQUE & THE LETTER

“Don’t You Like Martinis?”

In the debut episode of What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan, we go back a couple of decades before the making of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? to look at classic Bette & Joan with 1946’s Humoresque and 1940’s The Letter. It was the golden age of Hollywood and the two actresses reigned over their respective studios, eventually helping to define the decade through their on-screen representations of women with films such as these. Podcaster Michael McClain joins me to look at how Humoresque and The Letter each perfectly shows why the pair were considered to be two of the top movie stars of their generation.

After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. Screener Squad: The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

The Day The Earth Blew Up Movie Review

THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP: A LOONEY TUNES MOVIE REVIEW

Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies were a series of animated cartoons created by Warner Bros in 1935. The very first of these characters was Porky Pig created by Friz Freleng. On April 17, 1937 animators Tex Avery and Bob Clampett created an insane little black duck called Daffy. The very first time the duo of Porky Pig and Daffy Duck teamed up was in a nine minute cartoon titled Porky’s Duck Hunt in 1937. 88 years and hundreds of classics team-ups later, Porky and Daffy are back in The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie featuring the voices of Eric Bauza (Porky and Daffy) Candi Milo (Petunia Pig) and Peter MacNicol (as the Invader). As adorable little babies, orphaned Daffy and Porky were found and raised by wise and rugged Farmer Jim (Fred Tatasciore). Jim has instilled the values in them of taking care of each other and their home, and what better way to do that then for them to get a job. After a string of firings, Daffy and Porky befriend science loving inventor and currently employed Petunia who hooks them up with work at a gum factory. Repetitive line labor of pushing buttons and pulling cranks aside, what lies beneath is a plot so chewy it could result in the earth blowing up. It’s up to Daffy, Porky and Petunia to save the world. It’ll take a quartet of zany critics to praise this classically 2-D animated homage to B-movies and everything Looney. Bradly, Frank, Melina, and T.C. come together for a blast from the past and hope for more Looney Tunes features in the future.

Screener Squad: Seven Veils

Seven Veils Movie Review

SEVEN VEILS MOVIE REVIEW

John the Baptist was a total hottie. He had that wandering the desert skin tone and preaching the gospel six pack, and long flowing silky black hair. That’s probably why Salome, the step daughter of King Herod, wanted to seduce and steal a kiss from him. Heads up, things didn’t turn out so well for John. Introductory blasphemy aside, the story of this occurrence was a french play by Oscar Wilde back in 1896 which later was adapted into a famous opera by Richard Strauss in 1905, which is the opera Jeanine (Amanda Seyfried) is directing in the film Seven Veils by acclaimed writer director Atom Egoyan. Jeanine’s mentor has recently passed away and the production company has given her the reigns to complete the production. She plans to infuse the play with her own personal artistic ideas and possibly a bit of the ol’ repressed childhood trauma. Diva actors, pushy producers, and a broken marriage at home are all major hurdles Jeanine must overcome before opening night. In addition to Jeanne’s troubles, Seven Veils has side plots galore. Props master Clea (Rebecca Liddiard) is juggling her own creativity and pushing her girlfriend Rachel (Vinessa Antoine) to earn some stage time even though Ambur (Ambur Braid) is sensational as Salome, and given the sexual and violent nature of the play, the intimacy director has her hands full. Bradly, Frank, and Melina praise Amanda Seyfried’s performance and overall career journey from Mean Girls to Mank, throw some more accolades at Atom Egoyan’s filmography, and then really get into what they didn’t like at all about this play turned opera turned film.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Screener Squad: The Electric State

The Electric State Movie Review

THE ELECTRIC STATE MOVIE REVIEW

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo (Those Avengers Endgame fellas) and their frequent screenwriting collaborators, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (those other two Avengers Endgame fellas) continue their Netflix contract obligations by delivering one of the most expensive movies ever made (none of it going to Chris Pratt’s wigs) with an adaptation of the extraordinary illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag. In an alternate 1990, a war between humans and robots ended with humanity’s victory, thanks to Ready Player On-uh, I mean Neurocaster technology, which allowed humans to upload their minds into drone robots. By 1994, most people live in virtual states, while robots were exiled to an exclusion zone. Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown), a rebellious teenager who refuses to use the Neurocaster tech discovers a sentient robot controlled by her deceased younger brother Christopher. They embark on a journey to locate him somewhere out in the post-robot-war America, with the help of a veteran named Keats (Chris Pratt) and his sidekick robot, Herman (Anthony Mackie). Rae, Melina, and T.C. get online in the One Of Us holodeck to determine whether or not the $500 million price tag was well spent or if the Russos have offered up another The Gray Man.

Lyrae Anderson (Screener Squad)

You can call me Rae. You can also call me a film lover. I’ll watch it all — small screen; big screen, and everything in between. I have attended and worked for Fantastic Fest and South by Southwest for many years. I married a film geek as well. While we don’t agree on everything, we agree on our love of movies.
