MAYDAY MOVIE REVIEW
Mayday is a retro 80’s-style buddy action-comedy set during the waning days of the Soviet Union. Ryan Reynolds plays Lt. Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a US Navy pilot assigned to a black ops spy mission over a remote Soviet facility. Unfortunately for Troy, his plane is shot down, and he finds himself stranded in the snowy wilderness of the USSR. Fortunately for Troy, (some might say, conveniently) the first person he encounters is Nikolai Ustinov (Kenneth Brannagh), a retired KGB agent who loves American pop culture, especially the movie Top Gun and the songs of Bruce Springsteen. Troy’s only chance for escape is to travel over a thousand miles to the US Embassy in Moscow. Nikolai offers to get Troy to Moscow, in exchange for asylum for himself and his estranged daughter Anna (Maria Bakalova). Hot on their heels is the formidable KGB officer, Alexander Volkov (Marcin Dorociński) who has his own reasons for wanting to capture Troy. Co-writers and co-directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) have assembled a good team, and clearly had a sizable budget to work with, but was that enough to satisfy our reviewers’ need for speed? Listen to find out whether this movie transported Rae, Neil and Marco to the danger zone, or just made them want to leave the 80’s and get back to the future.
DIRECTED BY: John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein
STARRING: Ryan Reynolds, Kenneth Branagh, Marcin Dorociński, Maria Bakalova, David Morse, Clark Johnson, Wendy Crewson, Louis Cancelmi, Josh Hamilton, Lovell Adams-Gray, Alex Mallari Jr., Alex Ozerov

By day, Marco is a mild-mannered office worker, but by night he is a mild-mannered movie watcher. He does other mild-mannered stuff too.
“I’m not a film critic. I just play one on the Internet.”

Lyrae Anderson (Screener Squad)
You can call me Rae. You can also call me a film lover. I’ll watch it all — small screen; big screen, and everything in between. I have attended and worked for Fantastic Fest and South by Southwest for many years. I married a film geek as well. While we don’t agree on everything, we agree on our love of movies.

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)
I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.
