I AM GROOT SERIES REVIEW

I AM GROOT: I AM GROOT! I AM GROOT? I AM GROOT… I AM GROOT… I AM GROOT. I AM GROOT. I AM GROOT… I AM GROOT, I AM GROOT. I AM GROOT… I AM GROOT! I AM GROOT, I AM GROOT, I AM GROOT, AND I AM GROOT.

Hey you! Yes you, do you love that little scamp from Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2, Baby Groot? Well guess what? I have 15 more minutes of hot, steamy, Groot shorts… Waiting to satisfy all of your Groot fantasies. There’s only five episodes and they’re very short, but I Am Groot packs a lot into what little the show actually delivers on. The main flaws with I Am Groot comes with how Disney+ represents it on the platform. It’s not bundled together and is hard to search for, nor is it the only show that suffers from this same issue on Disney’s streaming platform. Today we have Groot, Groot, Groot, and Groot, talking about how in the end, aren’t We All Groot?”

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. INU-OH MOVIE REVIEW

The anime Inu-Oh directed by Masaaki Yuasa (Japan Sinks: 2020, Devilman Crybaby, Ride your Wave) is back to up the razzle and double the dazzle with a through the centuries rock opera about government controlled narratives being thwarted by the power of music. Hey Jude! You hear about the new biwa rock band raging against the emperor of Japan? The songwriter and biwa player Tomona is the keeper of the Heike histories. With a pick, his mighty axe, and mad writing skills, he’s on a quest to give the people their history back.  But this isn’t a solo act.  Inu-Oh, the deformed dog king frontman, exorcises the ghosts of the past using his incredible dancing to break on through to the other side. The feudal lords and shogun want to silence this new movement, of course. The Emperor’s trifflin’ ass should let it be and realize you can’t always get what you want oh but you get what you need.  Bradly, Harmoni, Ben, and Lewayne tune their guitars, check their mics, and spread their love of glam rock while discuss the complicated relationship between concerts and convoluted ongoing epic narratives.

Screener Squad: Carter

Carter Movie Review

CARTER MOVIE REVIEW

Okay, we’re going to give you the synopsis of the plot, but let’s be clear here. It doesn’t matter. Seriously, “plot” isn’t why anyone would watch this movie. In the midst of a deadly pandemic caused by a virus which makes the infected patients violent and zombie-like, originating from the Korean DMZ that has already devastated the United States and North Korea, a man wakes up in a blood-soaked bed in a motel room in Seoul. He is intruded upon by armed CIA agents who threaten him asking the whereabouts of a Dr. Jung Byung-ho. With no recollections of his past, he doesn’t know who he is or why he is there, let alone who Dr. Jung is. A female voice inside his ear, which only he can hear, tells him that his name is Carter and he needs to follow her instructions if he wants to live. Following the voice, he escapes the room and begins a nearly nonstop bloody fight across the city, into the air, and into North Korea, confronting hundreds who try to kill him but he survives thanks to his extraordinary fighting and killing skills. There, that’s the premise. But what this movie really is is a fight scene, a gunfight scene, another fight scene, a car chase scene, a fight with cars and guns, fight, fight, another gun fight, another one with knives, and another one with guns, and a car chase, and a fight-fight-fight-fight. Bored yet? Well, strap in with Harmoni, Sarah Jane, Lewayne, and T.C., because this thing is over TWO HOURS LONG, and this is pretty much the whole movie. Anyway, more fighting, a fight with guns, fist fight, there’s a helicopter involved in one, fight, and fight, and roll credits. The Squad loves a good action flick, but they are hard pressed to call this one “good”, or even a movie. Maybe a video game, but not a movie.

Screener Squad: Emily The Criminal

Emily The Criminal Movie Review

EMILY THE CRIMINAL MOVIE REVIEW

There are several ways to get out of debt in America. For instance you could get a second or third job, take out a loan or a second loan, or, ya know, start a career in credit card fraud that helps you pay off your $75,000 student loans while forcing you to mix it up with murderers, meth heads, and car thieves. What we’re saying here is there are options. In Emily the Criminal, Aubrey Plaza plays the titular Emily in this dramatic thriller and chooses, out of sheer desperation, the credit card fraud route. What follows is a tense and slow spiral downward into the underworld of Los Angeles crime. But before you go into this thinking you’re going to be on the edge of your seat, know that this is not an action movie. This isn’t Drive. This is a sad look at the lengths people are forced to go when the system is just impossibly stacked against you. The America of the Boomer generation doesn’t exist anymore. You can’t just go to college, get a career, get married, buy a house, and have kids without an insurmountable mountain of debt being collected. Sarah Jane, Harmoni, Lewayne, and T.C. discuss the nuances of the broken systems that this film presents and walk away wondering what ever happened to the American Dream. Hard to make this one funny, but we promise insightful conversation and at least one rimshot worthy joke.

The Sandman Series Review

THE SANDMAN SERIES REVIEW

It’s that time again for ambitious actors with mad directors and masters of the written word attempting to adapt unadaptable beloved classics. Netflix presents their take on Neil Gaiman’s award winning comic series The Sandman. The excellent ensemble cast includes Patton Oswalt, Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, Gwendoline Christie, David Thewlis, Jenna Coleman, and, most notably, Tom Sturridge as the dream weaving protagonist Morpheus. After decades of being imprisoned in the mortal realm. The king of dreams returns to his empire only to see his subjects gone and kingdom crumbling. To return his dreamscape to its former glory he’ll embark on a quest traveling the world to obtain the lost items taken from him during his captivity, from inner cities, to midnight diners, to the very gates of hell. Along the way he’ll commune with other whimsical anthropomorphized concepts such as Desire, Delirium, and Death. We’ll see the origins of Shakespeare, and get a foreboding appearance by the Devil Lucifer Morningstar herself. Bradly, Rae, and Neil discuss what they know of the comic, if a DC story can work sans DC characters, and how a well written script and a brilliant cast can elevate adapted works. Throw out the coffee pot and start counting sheep and see for yourself if this long awaited, much attempted, and expensive as hell series has bloomed into a dream come true.

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Allegoria Movie Review

ALLEGORIA MOVIE REVIEW

Art. What is art? What is art at its very core essence? Art is the expression of human creativity and imagination. It is the power of creation, and, in turn, is one of the few ways that we, as mere mortals, hold the power of the gods. But what happens when the artist takes that power for granted? What evils can the artist then bring to life? That is the question Spider One poses in his horror anthology film Allegoria. Our highly qualified One of Art critics, Mindy, Lewayne, and Matt take careful examination of this latest visual piece by Rob Zombie’s little brother, and decide whether it’s truly an artistic masterpiece, or just a pretentious display of an “artiste” attempting to take the spotlight from his more famous sibling. So grab a program and find your seats. The show’s about to start.

Screener Squad: They/Them

They/Them Movie Review

THEY/THEM MOVIE REVIEW

Before we go any further, our reviewers want to let you know that this movie sucks as a horror movie… but we all agreed it had potential and a well-seasoned Kevin Bacon. So what went fucking wrong, writer/director John Logan? We would love to know. You’ve written, arguably, many great scripts including Skyfall, The Aviator, and Hugo to name a few. It wasn’t the directing, you actually did great for your first time. The performances by Theo Germaine, Quei Tann, Monique Kim, and everyone down the cast list was great. Not only did you have Kevin Bacon playing a great asshole, you had Anna Chlumsky, the “girl” in My Girl (Chad has a boyhood crush). They/Them is a waste of great talent on a very confusing script about a bunch of LGBTQ+ kids at a conversion camp who are stalked by a masked killer. With interesting characters, yes, but none of them had enough depth by the third act for us to give a shit. But look, it’s not the worst film ever, though Jordan may debate you on that. That doesn’t mean you should skip it, especially if you’re cis. It’s always good to get a refresher on how not to be an asshole to the LGBTQ+ community. So Join Ben, Drew, Jordan and Chad on this Peacock feature, which didn’t offer a free trial to watch this film. Cheap ass NBC. We cancelled that subscription immediately.

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. He’s best found on Instagram or Twitter as @MovieReelBen.

” width=Drew Tinnin (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Deliberations of Doom)

Drew Tinnin is a Rondo Award nominated interviewer and critic who has worked at SiriusXM’s Fangoria Radio and Fangoria magazine in NYC, as well as the London-based Dazed Digital. Currently a regular contributor to the Dread Central Network, he’s excited to join up with some old friends and other film fans on One of Us as a new contributor to Screener Squad.

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. For more of this eccentric nerd, you can follow her on Twitter here and read her original writings on Deepest Corners of My Notebook.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). You can also check out Chris in his videocast, along with Martin Thomas and Danni Danger, that One Of Us does with our friends at Bell of Lost Souls: Crossover Event. He also regularly guests on the video game website Rage Select. Follow Chris on Twitter and Facebook and check out his Amazon Wish List.
