HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY: EP 7: ELLIS ISLAND/CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
On this special episode of Hollywood Royalty, we break from the show’s traditional three-title format of TV movie/arthouse film/mainstream title to look at Faye: The Miniseries and the two plum roles the actress found herself taking on in a pair of lavish, large-scale productions made for the small screen. First up is 1984’s Ellis Island, an adaptation of the Fred Mustard Stewart novel, which sees Faye and Richard Burton lead a sprawling cast of familiar faces in this multi-narrative tale of immigrants in early 20th-century New York City. After that, we set sail with 1985’s Christopher Columbus where Gabriel Byrne brings the famous explorer to life alongside a cast that also includes Oliver Reed, Max Von Sydow, Eli Wallach, and, of course, Faye, as Queen Isabella I of Spain. Scott Humphries, author of The Age of Melodramatic Miniseries: When Glamour Ruled on Television, joins me as we explore Faye’s entries in the genre during its most popular era.
