Jean-Pierre Desperois was born a slave in Haiti with the power to travel through both time and space. Now he lives in 1931 in Tunis, smuggling salt. When he gets implicated in a series of horrible murders, Jean-Pierre must use his power to prove his innocence. But that’s when things get complicated. Sci-fi meets pulp meets noir in an epic thriller that spans centuries.

In which Jean-Pierre comes up with a plan to cover up some murders, returns to Makandal’s camp with a new friend, and participates in a spectacular ritual.

In which Jean-Pierre is teamed up with two members of Makandal’s Red Sect, they train to steal the necklace, make their way towards the de la Coeur plantation, encounter some rogue slaves, and Jean-Pierre makes special use of a ku-bha-sa.

Jean-Pierre forgets last night’s dreams, embraces his new life in Makandal’s camp, accepts a challenge from Makandal, and trains for a dangerous mission.

In which Jean-Pierre assesses his situation, overhears some strange noises in the night, sees an angel, recounts an experience with a turtle, and discovers another side of his companion Isabelle.

In which Jean-Pierre meets Makandal, discovers just how badly he’s been damaged by his experience in the box, interacts with another former slave, and recovers in a cave.

In which Jean-Pierre reveals an unusual ability, escapes from solitary, and finds himself in a sticky situation involving men’s boots and horses’ hooves.

In which we learn a myth of locusts, witness the demise of Makandal, and Jean-Pierre cleans up a mess only to be brought back to the interrogation room.
