Screener Squad: Lanterns

LANTERNS SERIES REVIEW

For a show about space cops armed with powerful cosmic jewelry, this new DCU show spends a lot of time in rural Nebraska. Pitched as a “True Detective” style series set in the DC Universe, Lanterns is a a small-town murder mystery spanning several decades, multiple generations of family trauma, and dark secrets with world ending implications. Earth’s first Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and his recently appointed trainee, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) both have good reasons for resenting one another, but their job requires them to work together. For now. Their first case takes them to the sleepy town of Rushville, where they assist local Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald) who is investigating a mass shooting with possible ties to a hostile alien threat. Their investigation leads to tragic consequences not just for Hal and John, but for all the residents of Rushville who blame the Lanterns for the destruction of their town, and the lost lives of so many of the townsfolk. A decade later, Hal Jordan is found dead in the same small town, and it’s up to John to find the person responsible for murdering the mentor he despised. There’s no shortage of suspects, as everyone in Rushville still hates the Green Lanterns for what happened to their community, and the secrets of the past won’t stay hidden forever. Our reviewers, Drew Shaw, Lewayne, and Marco have convened the Oneofus Corps, charged up their power rings, and are ready to shed some light on this latest HBO series.

Marco Noyola (Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Audio Editor)

By day, Marco is a mild-mannered office worker, but by night he is a mild-mannered movie watcher. He does other mild-mannered stuff too.
“I’m not a film critic. I just play one on the Internet.”

Drew Shaw

As the son of a Coast Guard pilot, Drew has lived everywhere in the US that has a coast that needs guarding. All his childhood travels eventually landed him in Northern Virginia where he works at a brewery by day and watches movies with all the other free time life has to offer him. Drew’s fiance and cats are tired of him ranting and raving about whatever his latest movie obsession is so he is taking to the air waves to make it everybody else’s problem. On the off chance Drew isn’t watching a movie, he likes spending his time reading comics and literature, gaming, and playing around with all his various music making gadgets.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.
