IN THE HAND OF DANTE MOVIE REVIEW

From painter turned filmmaker Julian Schnabel (Basquiat, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) comes yet another biographical picture about a tortured artist – two tortured artists, actually. Based on the novel by Nick Tosches, In the Hand of Dante tells two parallel stories; both starring Oscar Isaac as the medieval poet Dante Alighieri, and a fictionalized version of Nick Tosches himself, a down on his luck writer who has been hired by the mob to steal a priceless manuscript of Dante’s masterpiece, “The Divine Comedy.” From there, metafictional hijinks ensue as we cut between the past and present, while characters ruminate about art, love, the afterlife, and everything in between. This divisive, star-studded film is part historical drama, artist biopic, spiritual meditation, and violent metafictional gangster flick. Needless to say, it’s a lot, but was it enough for our reviewers Dom, Drew, and Marco? Listen to their review to find out whether they graded Schnabel’s latest with a capital A for Art or F for Fuggedaboutit.

Dominic Rizzi (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, NY, Dom “the Movie Nerd” Rizzi fell in love with film at a young age. After majoring in film in both community college and achieving a Bachelor’s degree in film from SUNY Oswego, Dom went on to start his own podcast Talkin’ TV during Covid before studying acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. Relentlessly passionate about everything related to film, Dom has shot and produced several short films, as well as having written several scripts. Working at a liquor store by day, Dom has continued to pursue his passion for cinema in any capacity he can, because to follow his dreams, in the words of Shia LaBeouf pre-descent into insanity, “just do it.”

Drew Shaw

As the son of a Coast Guard pilot, Drew has lived everywhere in the US that has a coast that needs guarding. All his childhood travels eventually landed him in Northern Virginia where he works at a brewery by day and watches movies with all the other free time life has to offer him. Drew’s fiance and cats are tired of him ranting and raving about whatever his latest movie obsession is so he is taking to the air waves to make it everybody else’s problem. On the off chance Drew isn’t watching a movie, he likes spending his time reading comics and literature, gaming, and playing around with all his various music making gadgets.
