LORD OF THE FLIES SERIES REVIEW
Unless you’ve been living on a desert island, you’ve probably heard of William Golding’s classic 1954 novel Lord of the Flies; you’ve probably even had to read it in school. The novel has been adapted multiple times for film, as well as for stage, radio, and at least one graphic novel, but surprisingly never for television, Developed and written by Jack Thorne (Adolescence) and directed by Marc Munden (The Secret Garden) this four part miniseries debuted on BBC Television earlier in the year, and is now available to stream on Netflix. It tells the story of a pack of pre-pubescent British schoolboys who are stranded on a desert island when their plane crashes, killing all the adults on board. Left to their own devices, the boys must figure out how to survive long enough to be rescued. The boys elect Ralph (Winston Sawyers) as their chief, and with the help of the pragmatic Piggy (David McKenna) the sensitive Simon (Ike Talbut), and leader of the hunters, Jack (Lox Pratt), they go about finding food, building shelters, establishing a signal fire, and creating something like a functional community. Things begin promisingly enough, but it’s only a matter of time before Ralph finds his position as chief challenged by the more authoritarian Jack and his gang of increasingly feral hunters. Our reviewers Caroline, Eoin, and Marco take turns passing the conch around to discuss the miniseries, and whether it warrants its epic runtime.

Caroline Sulek
Caroline Sulek resides in Mckinney, TX with her son Henry and two cats: Sally and Rocky. As a mom, corporate baddie, and unabashed lover of all things silly, spooky, and creative, she brings a unique perspective to the One of Us network. Her love of art and movies started long ago when she and her brother, Wright, would spend entire summer vacations in front of the TV and she would draw portraits of Wright as he sat watching for hours. Caroline has been a frequent guest and fan favorite of the Trash in the Can podcast with her brother, Wright, and his life podcast partner, Eric Samaniego. Caroline enjoys the most gruesome of horror movies and the most bingeable of reality shows and anywhere in between!

Eoin Daly
Born and raised in Dublin Ireland, Eoin currently lives in London and has been an avid film lover from as far back as they can remember. Eoin enjoys going to the cinema weekly regardless of the film: new, old, or the most random title. They have no preconceived notions when taking in a new film. They tend to look for the good in any film they watch and will always love the art form. They are a major fan of actress-led cinema and will never apologize for this one film bias.
