HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY: MOTHER FAYE – BURNING SECRET/THE TWILIGHT OF THE GOLDS/THE YARDS
This week on Hollywood Royalty, Faye is mother. Literally. In this episode, we look at three notable times the actress took on mother/matriarchal roles in the years since Mommie Dearest‘s release. First up is the 1988 arthouse film Burning Secret, where Faye plays Sonya, a married wife and mother who finds herself embarking on an unexpected romance with a charming Baron (Klaus Maria Brandauer) after he befriends her son, Edmond (David Eberts), leading to a betrayal between mother and child. After that, we revisit the 1996 Showtime production of Jonathan Tolins’ acclaimed play The Twilight of the Golds where Faye stars as Jewish mother Phyllis, whose pregnant daughter Suzanne (Jennifer Beals) discovers through advanced genetic testing that her unborn child carries the gay gene, causing a rift in their tight-knit family, which also includes gay son David (Brendan Fraser). Finally, we end with 2000’s The Yards from Miramax Films, which sees Faye play Kitty, the matriarch of a powerful Queens family with ties to shady business practices in this operatic family saga from director James Gray. InSession Film‘s Zita Short joins me as we look at Faye in mother/matriarchal mode.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.
