HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY: EP.8 – ON A MOONLIT NIGHT/GIA/THE RULES OF ATTRACTION
On this episode of Hollywood Royalty we look at Faye as the quintessential director’s actress; the kind of screen performer whose choices and collaborations tended to challenge traditional movie conventions. We begin with 1989’s On a Moonlit Night, where Faye plays an executive blackmailed by reporter Rutger Hauer who threatens to expose her secret in this Lina Wertmuller drama set during the AIDS crisis. After that, we see Faye portray real-life modeling maven Wilhelmina Cooper in screenwriter Michael Cristofer’s 1998 highly intense directorial debut, Gia, starring Angelina Jolie as the iconic supermodel. Finally, we see Faye have a ball as one half of a pair of upper-class, boozing, pill-popping mothers in Roger Avary’s 2002 adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ satirical novel The Rules of Attraction. Co-host of Trash in the Can, and co-owner of the One of Us network, Wright Sulek, joins me as we examine Faye’s knack for being drawn to highly unconventional filmmakers with incredibly unique visions.
