HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY Ep.2: DOC/MOMMIE DEAREST/FOLLOW-UP PROJECTS
On our second episode of Hollywood Royalty: Dunaway After Crawford, we tackle the movie that serves as the true jumping-off point for this series, 1981’s Mommie Dearest. Originally meant to be a serious re-telling of the abusive relationship between Joan Crawford (famously played by Faye) and her daughter Christina, the movie ended up being simultaneously lavish and shocking with certain sequences leaving audiences so stunned, there was little else for them to do but laugh at the screen as it dawned on them that they were watching a new milestone in the world of camp cinema. Co-host of the podcast Pfeiffer Pfridays, Jerry Downey, joins me as we revisit this legendary film and Faye’s one-of-a-kind performance. We’ll also take a look at the 1971 Western Doc, the first collaboration between Faye and Mommie Dearest director Frank Perry, in which the actress plays another fiery real-life figure.
