BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F MOVIE REVIEW
Better late than never, which could be said to be true both for the release date of this review and of the movie Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. After the dismal third chapter in 1994, and with Eddie Murphy’s declining star power, it’s understandable that this was a franchise that was going to be relegated to the shelf for awhile. But now, it’s back and so is Eddie as wisecracking Detroit cop Axel Foley, again with an excuse to be in Beverly Hills. He gets a phone call from his old friend Billy (Judge Reinhold) saying that Axel’s daughter Jane’s life is in danger. Jane (Taylour Paige) is currently a lawyer who is representing a man who appears to have been framed for the murder of an undercover officer. By the time Axel gets to California, Billy is missing and Axel has to turn to John Taggert (John Ashton), now the Beverly Hills police chief, for help in a situation no one believes is happening except him and his very estranged daughter. Soon, Axel has to resort to teaming with Jane’s ex-boyfriend, Detective Bobby Abbott (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who still pines for her, and of course that’s more than a bit awkward. Maybe a lot is awkward here, as the film tries to recreate a lot of the high points of the original but is there enough new here for it to count as a good entry in the series or even just a good movie? Chad, Nathan, and Drew put on their investigator hats to solve the mystery.

Drew Tinnin (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Deliberations of Doom)
Drew Tinnin is a Rondo Award nominated interviewer and critic who has worked at SiriusXM’s Fangoria Radio and Fangoria magazine in NYC, as well as the London-based Dazed Digital. Currently a regular contributor to the Dread Central Network, he’s excited to join up with some old friends and other film fans on One of Us as a new contributor to Screener Squad.
Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)
A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads.
