ANTEBELLUM MOVIE REVIEW
Lionsgate’s new horror film is running up against some pretty harsh criticisms. What is it about this story that is causing some critics to describe it as an ‘atrocity’? Well, we can tell you not all critics agree. Ok, ONE of ours. Ok, it’s Chris. But you’re used to him being the odd man out by now. The story follows Janelle Monáe as first, a slave in the Antebellum south named Eden. She toils through an extremely harsh environment (even for the Antebellum south) dealing with murderous and rapey Confederate overseers and fellow slaves who are looking to her to lead an escape. But then, suddenly, she also is a modern woman named Veronica with a house, husband, daughter, and is a paid professional speaker and Doctorate holder. Which is real? Listen to (or watch) Chris, Jena, Frank, and Wright parse out the good from the bad in this, yes, longer than usual review. Honestly, there were so many conflicting ideas we had little choice.
Subscribers at TIME LORD level or above can watch the longer, uncut video (featuring an extended ‘spoilers’ discussion) right here.
DIRECTED BY: Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz
STARRING:Janelle Monáe, Eric Lange, Jena Malone, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, Gabourey Sidibe, Marque Richardson, Tongayi Chirisa, Robert Aramayo, Lily Cowles, London Boyce
