HIGH SCORE MINISERIES REVIEW
“High Score” is a new documentary series on Netflix which tells the story of how video games moved out of college computer labs, into arcades, and into our own living rooms. What started off as a way for programmers to amuse themselves has turned into a multi-billion-dollar industry. Spanning six episodes covering the late 70s to the early 90s, the documentary interviews many of the key entrepreneurs, executives, innovators, artists, programmers, and championship gamers who fueled the early video game boom and forever changed the entertainment landscape.
While hardly comprehensive, “High Score” provides an accessible entry point for anyone interested in learning about the video game phenomenon. While occasionally focusing on well known figures within the gaming industry, the documentary also puts a spotlight on some overlooked innovators whose contributions deserve to be recognized. Along the way, we’re treated to charming retro style graphics, playful reenactments, and glimpses of rarely seen sketches, diagrams, early gameplay, and other archival material. Our team of reviewers, Mark, Matt, Mindy and Marco, watched the entire season and had a lot to discuss. Did “High Score” earn high scores from our reviewers, or is it “Game Over” for this documentary? Listen and find out!
