DESERT ONE MOVIE REVIEW
This latest documentary from two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple sheds light on the aborted military operation designated Operation Eagle Claw. For over a year Iranian revolutionaries held 52 Americans hostage inside the US Embassy. While publicly endorsing a diplomatic solution, President Jimmy Carter secretly ordered Delta Force to storm the embassy and bring the hostages home. On April 24, 1980, after months of planning, Delta Force flew into Iran under cover of night. Unfortunately, the mission went sideways once they reached Desert One, a landing strip and staging area where eight servicemen lost their lives. Weaving archival footage, contemporary interviews, and effective hand drawn illustrations, Kopple paints a nuanced view of the events leading up to the Iran hostage crisis, why the rescue mission failed, and how both the American and Iranian people responded to the tragedy. Listen to our commando squad of reviewers Marco, Santiago, Spider-Mike, and Frank as they try to contain their enthusiasm for this gripping new documentary.
