On September 26, 1991, a group of eight scientists locked themselves into a giant vivarium in the Arizona desert. The purpose of their two-year experiment was to see if people could sustain life in an ecosystem completely closed off from the outside world. They named it Biosphere 2, and as time passed, it was increasingly vilified in the press as an utter failure. But was it really?
