UNCUT GEMS MOVIE REVIEW
Adam Sandler has the weirdest career of almost anyone I can think of. Launching into the cinema after a successful SNL run he released a series of initially good but rapidly with declining quality comedies that rapidly sunk so low in quality expectations as to become almost a hallmark for ‘worst films of the year’ (but that, sadly, generally always make cash). This, interspersed with a handful of more serious and lauded performances in films directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, James L. Brooks, Noah Baumbach, Judd Apatow, and now the recently celebrated (but not near enough) Safdie brothers who released the amazing Good Time in 2017. I’d say, ‘who keeps hiring this dude?’ but he really does turn out solid performances when he’s not making the worst dreck on the planet. Uncut Gems is no exception. He plays a jeweler in NYC who has an end-stage gambling addiction. Nothing can get in the way of his need to play, not family, not friends, not lovers, not looming fear of death from all sides. As all the pieces of his life begin their final descent, he still seems unclear at how bad things really are. But the audience sure gets it. Listen to Chris, JC, and Marco discuss his decline.
