Stars Line Up For The First ‘Muppets Most Wanted’ Poster

I could not be happier for the success of The Muppets because it brings some much needed childhood nostalgia to my cold black heart. I am only just a little ashamed to say that Life’s A Happy Song has the top spot on my iPod’s Top 25 Most Played playlist- but then again I’m not ashamed because everyone needs a little pick me up during the brutal day-to-day work week.

The news of a Muppets sequel was equally as exciting. Additionally, the release of the first trailer, while sparse on material, raised the excitement that it was indeed coming and presented a pretty fun title, Muppets Most Wanted. I’m a little bummed that it doesn’t look like Amy Adams and Jason Segal aren’t returning, but seeing names like Tom Hiddleston, Christoph Waltz, Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais in the cast list more than makes up for it.

The first teaser poster simply featured the iconic Muppets ‘M’ with a stamp of Most Wanted underneath, which was great for a teaser poster, but the new one sheet released by Disney is much more suitable to the film. It is similar to the previous film in that it throws the headline stars in and fits in a whole bunch of our favorite Muppets. It places Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais around Ty Burrell who appears to be literally a mustache twirling villain.

James Bobin is returning to direct which I think is a very good sign as he did a fantastic job in my opinion with the first film and I’m sincerely hoping for more of the same fun nostalgic fun this time around.

OOU.SHOW–Zach Martin Talks Designing Posters for George Takei

The reason we created our interview series OneOfUs.SHOW was to highlight folks with interesting passions as well as those with interesting professions. All the better is when those two spheres overlap in as significant a way as they have for poster artist Zach Martin.

Zach is the graphic artist for Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy, a major fixture of the Austin geek community. Recently, Zach designed the below poster for an in-store appearance by none other than Mr. Sulu himself George Takei; a man Zach aptly describes as President of the Internet.

Takei2

The poster was so well-received that Takei himself licensed it! Over night, Zach became one of the most sought-after pop artists on the web. OneOfUs.SHOW has the exclusive first interview with this burgeoning superstar as we discuss poster art, Tex Avery, and the perils of working at Hot Topic.

Listen to the show and be sure to seek out Zach via any of his many online outlets. If nothing else, let him know you enjoy his work.

Trailer Reaction: ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’

Today, the first trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past, Bryan Singer’s sequel to 2011’s X-Men: First Class, hit the internet to lavish praise. The film, slated for a May 23, 2014 release, will be Singer’s return to the X-Men series after an 11-year absence. The film adaptations of the adventures of Marvel’s leading mutants have varied drastically in quality since Singer’s X2: X-Men United. However, First Class and The Wolverine have put the series back in a positive direction for the moment and judging by this trailer, Days of Future Past will continue to improve on this trend.

The Days of Future Past film shares its name and premise with those of one of the most famous X-Men stories of all time. The few remaining X-Men of an apocalyptic future must return to the past in order to prevent the key events that led to the world’s collapse and the deaths of many of their comrades. This trailer demonstrates that Singer and his crew are more than up to the task of bringing this legendary comic run to life. Check it out below:

The first detail worth discussing is the return of the previous cast members who have not been seen (as adults) since 2009’s X-Men: The Last Stand.  Rogue, Storm, Kitty Pryde, Iceman, and the elder versions of Beast, Xavier and Magento all make appearances in the trailer. I have high hopes that their inclusion is the result of a total retcon of the third film. By most measures, that movie was a travesty and started the decline of the X-Men film franchise. Beloved characters such as Cyclops, Jean Grey, and even Professor X himself were unceremoniously killed off (some more permanently than others) while other characters such as Rogue, Magneto and Mystique were stripped of their abilities (again, perhaps not permanently). By including them in Days of Future Past, I can only hope that the poor choices made in 2009 will be wiped from existence in 2014. Given that this is a time travel story, it is entirely possible that our heroes will be placed in a version of reality where The Last Stand never happened. I wish I could go with them!

The first voice we hear is that of Patrick Stewart’s Xavier imploring Wolverine to go back to the past and alter history to prevent this dystopian future from occurring. His voice is as stirring as ever and his words are painfully sincere. The scene with the two Xaviers facing each other as the elder begs the younger to hope again is particularly powerful. While it is a tall order to expect everyone’s dialogue and delivery to match this level of gravitas, the bar is set high from the very beginning. We hear the Professor’s plea over shots of various X-Men and Brotherhood members. There were several new faces in the crowd, and to be honest, I couldn’t identify all of them, though one face stood out from the rest. I laughed out loud when I saw Bishop looking exactly like Forest Whitaker in Battlefield Earth. That hairdo, though accurate with the source material, has no place in this or any decade. Bishop needs to go back in time to right before he decided to go with long dreads and pick literally anything else.

To go further down this road, I think most of the costumes have been vastly improved from the past. Special praise goes to Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan’s future getups, which can only be described as badass. However, there are three major offenders I can’t abide in good faith. Bishop is one, as noted above. The second is the young Xavier. James McAvoy looks like he came over from auditioning for the part of Forest Gump‘s Lieutenant Dan, post-Vietnam. I can forgive this only because his scraggly facial hair and that hideous shirt are in line with the fashion trends of the time. Lastly, Beast still looks like a rejected Muppet dug out from Jim Henson’s dumpster. These missteps aside, the rest of the characters look exactly like they should, given their plight. It appears that the casting and costuming choices were made excellently.

There are two other aspects of the trailer that I find particularly exciting. The X-Men of the past are in the 1970’s and the scenes shown from that period properly reflect the societal upheaval that was iconic of that time. People are rioting, officials are escaping to clandestine bunkers, buildings are collapsing into rubble, it’s mass hysteria everywhere, as it should be. This is an America that would have clung to Richard Nixon’s promises to bring order from chaos, even at the cost of personal liberties. I certainly hope this film explores the rich backdrop of America under the authoritative Nixon Administration and mines it thoroughly for material. Much like First Class, this film seeks to be a period piece and its team present an entirely convincing vision of the time period.

Finally, I would be remiss in my duties if I didn’t mention Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask. He has no dialogue, but he doesn’t need any. The brief clip speaks for him. First his back faces us as he sits in front of what is likely either a military or congressional committee, then the mustachioed Dinklage, surrounded by microphones, takes a deep breath before what is likely to be a key moment for his character. Trask is a vital component of the X-Men legacy and selecting a lauded actor like Peter Dinklage for such a pivotal role gives me faith about what is to come.

All in all, this is a tremendous trailer, even with my short list of minor gripes. I was somewhat excited for this movie, but now it is only behind The Winter Soldier on my big list of anticipated films of 2014. Of course, when we find out more about it, you can come right here to One of Us for the skinny.

One Last ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Trailer Heats Things Up

I loved the first Hunger Games and I am pretty stoked about the upcoming release of Catching Fire. The latest trailer for the film has a number of really cool glimpses into what’s in store for fans. Those who have read the books will be treated to quite a few memorable moments from the series as it seems to me that director Francis Lawrence has taken the world Gary Ross set up in the first and brought it to life in a much more vibrant and exciting way.

Having not seen Catching Fire as of yet, I’m only speculating, plus I actually think Ross did a pretty great job with the original, but with the trailers that have been released it simply looks as though Lawrence really upped his game for this blockbuster release. I was incredibly disappointed by I Am Legend, a film with beautiful cinematography with all the breathtaking ruined landscapes, but really dropped the ball with the horrible CGI creatures throughout the film- the same can be said for the CGI in Constantine.

The final trailer here really sets the stage for what will likely be one of the year’s biggest releases- especially since it will be out around the holiday season. The trailer features quite a bit of action and mostly no dialogue outside of a voice over by Donald Sutherland as the series’ main villain President Snow. The special effects look like a big step up from Ross’ film- which I felt was the film’s biggest hindrance- and the arena this time around looks to have a whole lot more excitement abound. Look forward to seeing the final product come November 22nd. Check out the trailer below!

Murder, She Wrote Returns to TV… Sort Of

From around the mid-70s to the early 90s, one of the hottest genres in TV was murder/mystery detective fiction. While there were shows featuring the police solving crimes, a great many of them focused on private investigators and amateur sleuths. I’m surprised that as a little kid I didn’t think that every adult solved crimes in their spare time. It was almost all you would see once you flipped on the boob tube, and before you say I’m being hyperbolic please remember that this was the era of TV gave us a show about crime-solving priest who was assisted by a streetwise nun nicknamed “Steve.”

Father Dowling Mysteries, yes this was an actual thing.

One of the staples of this genre, of the entire TV era really, was the critically acclaimed CBS juggernaut Murder, She Wrote, staring Angela Lansbury as a retired English teacher turned novelist and sleuth  Jessica “JB” Fletcher and ran for 264 episodes over 12 seasons and then had 4 TV movies after that. The show enjoys an avid fan base to this day and it seems NBC wants capitalize on the name as they plan to give the show a fresh reboot.

The new show will star Oscar winner, Octavia Spencer (The Help) as a hospital administrator who just has self-published her first novel, and who of course can’t help but poke her nose into things and help the police solve crimes. Alexandra Cunningham, a former writer and producer for the ABC series Desperate Housewives will be putting her pen back to work writing for the new series and will co-executive produce with David Janollari. Both Spencer and Cunningham  consider themselves “crime buffs” and fans of the classic series “To get the chance to reimagine Murder, She Wrote for a dynamic and multi-faceted actress like Octavia is a thrill and a pleasure.” said Cunningham . Angela Lansbury supposedly has been approached to make an appearance but there is no word yet if she will appear.

While I didn’t watch Murder, She Wrote often as a kid (I’m more of a Simon & Simon, Colombo, and Magnum P.I. sort of guy), I do have a lot of respect for the series and for Angela Lansbury.  However, despite the pedigree of the creative people behind this new series, I can’t help but feel this project is a little cheap and just trying to cash in on a popular name. Murder, She Wrote is an iconic series with an iconic actress and it should stand on its own. Let these new creators make their own show with its own name, it should be good enough to live or die under its  own banner. I do hope the new show is good and does well, but if it survives and thrives it will be because of its own merit, not the name they unnecessarily tacked onto it.

Remember that we want to hear from you, are you going to watch the new Murder, She Wrote?  Let us know in the comments below, and while you’re at it why don’t you let us know who some of your favorite TV detectives are as well.

‘Sherlock’ Is Such a Tease!: January 19th Premiere Date Set

Grab your magnifying glasses and nicotine patches, because Sherlock is coming back to town! It has been some time after it’s temporary suspension back in January of 2012 due to schedule conflicts, that being Benedict Cabbage Patch in Star Trek, Martin Freeman in The Hobbit, and Steven Moffat running Doctor Who. After all the great work they have done individually, it’s exciting to see the Three Musketeers re-unite! The teaser trailer gives me so much hype:

Now, it seems that the premiere is set for January 19th of 2014, as reported by the L.A. Times. They also gave us a hint of what to expect from this coming season:

“The new season will introduce Mary Morstan, Watson’s future wife, played by Freeman’s real-life partner Amanda Abbington. Footage shown during the Comic-Con presentation revealed a glimpse of the wedding, as well as a humorous and heartfelt conversation in which Watson asks Holmes to be his best man.”

Indeed my friends. It looks like this season will be focused more on the emotional core of the series, at least for the first episode. They will of course show us the cleverness and the excitement of what the writers want to offer, but I wouldn’t mind a nice and calm episode, trying to humanize a person who seems  to understand almost nothing except logic. Steven Moffat mentioned at comic-con that this episode contains one of his favorite moment of the show, which is when Sherlock reunited with Watson, stating:

“I think that’s the showstopper,” he said. “It’s a long, complicated, emotional journey, and extremely funny.”

If the episode itself was just him dealing with this major change in the dynamic relationship of Sherlock and Watson, I would be completely satisfied, and then kick my ass with the clever detective stuff in episode two. The reason I say this, is because this series is the definitive Sherlock series, in terms of bringing it to modern audiences. The Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock was really entertaining, but they focused too much on the action, which isn’t really what Sherlock is. Sure, there were some Sherlockian type stuff in there, but when it boils down to Sherlock chasing Mark Strong on a bridge trying to diffuse a steam punk bomb activated via makeshift remote control, it does get a bit ridiculous. So when they do the big reveal at the end with the whole “Ah ha! Let me explain to you how I discovered your entire plan after doing this crazy spiritual ritual, and show you things that the audience would never picked up on because we never gave you the proper clues,” I thought to myself “Yeah okay, it’s cool that you figured everything out and all, I just wish I was right there with you. How were we supposed to know that when you licked the cemetery tombstone, which is gross by the way, that you tasted an adhesive, if you didn’t tell us about it till the very end?”

This is why this series thrives. When we see Sherlock analyze things, those cool little super imposed texts appear, and we see how his mind works. Granted, some of the deductions get almost to a superhuman or clairvoyant level, but the show never breaks reality completely, and remains very much within reason. This way, I am able to see the clues that he picks up on, as well as giving me an explanation as to why they are clues, without trying to over simplify it and talk down to me. The series really has faith in the intellect of its viewers, and never tries to be smarter than it’s audience. So you can bet your ASS that I am excited for the return of the world’s greatest detective! Sherlock was a Velociraptor, he would indeed be a clever girl.

So OOUies, are you excited for the return? Which do you like better, RDJ or Benny Cucumber, as Sherlock? Whatever it is, comment below and let one of us know!

Big Finishing Move: ‘Doctor Who: The Fearmonger’

Hello boys and girls and everyone else, and welcome back to Big Finishing Move, where I have been given the honor to review Doctor Who audio dramas from (if you haven’t guessed from the title) Big Finish. On the docket today is an entry considered to be one of if not the first quintessential Doctor Who story Big Finish ever made, The Fearmonger. This was only the fifth outing in what would become Big Finish’s monthly range for Doctor Who and it was released way back in February of the year 2000, so does the story still hold up?

Set after Survival, which was the last story in the classic TV series, The Fearmonger finds the 7th Doctor and Ace (my favorite classic Who companion by the way) as they try to hunt down a creature hides inside people and feeds on fear. The Fearmonger is using the realm of politics to help stir the pot and make more food for itself, and sadly for everyone, it is quite good at it. One of the themes running through the piece is a lack of listening and the inability of many people to see past their own rhetoric to entertain anyone else’s point of view. The Doctor and Ace’s multiple appeals for honest talk and peaceful moderation fall on deaf ears as everyone around them becomes more and more polarized and violent with every new development. Many of the stories of 7th Doctor’s final season had an underlying leftest social and political undercurrent to them and while the political charge can be found in The Fearmonger it takes a slightly more moderate view attacking buzz words and extremism on both sides. The story is littered with horrible characters who do nasty things but Jonathan Blum (the writer) was clever enough to show that there is a person behind those acts to keep us forgetting just how easily we could become like them ourselves.

Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred slip back into their roles without the slightest hiccup, the pairs natural chemistry off screen has always made their on screen counterparts respect and affection for each other all the more believable. The script knows this relationship is where the magic is and gives both actors plenty to play with. The other actors do the best they can with what they have, but since this isn’t a piece that lends itself to them doing any sort standout performance you won’t find any of them overly memorable.

So does the story hold up? Hell yeah it does! The world has gotten even more divisive since this this story came out making its call for peace and sanity all the more needed. It keeps adding new twists and turns to keep the listener engaged and you feel the pressure growing every second so when everything go crazy at the end it feels justified. The lack of special features does kind of suck, but if that’s the best complaint I can come up with it should tell you something. You can pick this baby up for a cheap-as-hell $2.99 so get cracking and pick this one up if you haven’t already.

Next time we jump ahead to the most recent offerings and look at Big Finish’s multi-Doctor story released in celebration of Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary this November, The Light At The End.

Remember to check out OneOfUs’ own audio drama, Infinite Variations, and in case you missed it, you can go view my first Big Finish review here.

The Ohio State Marching Band’s Latest Performance Will Blow Your Mind

I’m not a passionate college football fan, but I love the halftime shows. I’ve done some marching band routines in my time and I’ll testify from firsthand experience that anything less than 100% precision can result in the downfall of the entire performance. It takes weeks of diligent rehearsal to commit the most basic field maneuvers memory. The more complicated exercises are impressive, but they demand absolute accuracy to be effective. Adding the musical component to the movements is an equally-taxing challenge. The best marching best in the nation make it look easy, but their routines are definitely not.

I say all of this to put into perspective how BADASS the Ohio State Marching Band’s Saturday performance was. The band’s movie-themed act was a musical astonishment, but just wait until you see some of the formations they create with their members. Superman, Harry Potter, and Jeff Goldblum should be honored by such tributes. Check out the video below and share your thoughts about the performance in the comments!
