This time Chris sits down with Ashley (That’s right, Ashley! I know, right?) to go through some of her favorite films to play Fantastic Fest this year, and most of them are by first time directors. Let’s take a look at what you get…
THE RED TURTLE
This co-production between Wild Bunch and Studio Ghibli gives us the precious (some might say TOO precious, but what do they know?) story of a shipwrecked man who is prevented from leaving his island by a giant turtle, but then other stuff happens and OMG life is awesome, amiright?
RAW
A young woman attends veterinary school (with the most heinous freshman hazing ever) and finds her vegetarianism challenged when a reluctant first taste of raw meat leads to an obsession with it, and not from conventional sources either. Also, lots of sister bonding and total win.
THE YOUNG OFFENDERS
A drug running boat filled with bales of cocaine capsizes of the Irish coast and two young, dumb friends decide all their problems will be solved if they make the long bike ride there and grab one of the bales that has washed up for themselves. Definitely one of the funniest films of the festival.
DEAREST SISTER
This Laotian horror follows a young girl who is staying with her aunt, who is going blind, to take care of her. When it turns out the Aunt keeps having visions of ghoulish figures that send her into trances, her niece discovers that her creepy whispers are of guaranteed winning lottery numbers.
